Chapter 1 - Her Fate
“No! Let me go! Please!” The night was now filled with Leora's frantic screams, ending just as the wind rustled through the trees and a lone owl hooted in the distance. Her cries filled with panic grew more and more desperate as she was dragged back to the huge manor. She then felt an iron grip encircling her arm, shook off its sense quickly and looked up into Wayne’s cold eyes, her father’s beta. His hand was like an iron manacle around her wrist and his grip didn't slack as he dragged her across the dark garden. Leora fought, her feet slipping across the uneven ground, flailing at Wayne's arm with one of her hands. Adrenaline was already racing through her veins, her movements were desperate and wild as she breathed hard. “Wayne, no, don't…Dont do this,” she cried, voice cracking. Her face was wet and glistened in the moonlight from tears streaking her cheeks. She threw a frightened glance backwards, the wide trees behind her like the freedom she wanted and was now almost gone. Wayne tightened his jaw, but he did not speak and the grip did not loosen. Before him stretched the great wall, and his fierce eyes seemed not to waver at all. He yanked her up the steps of the mansion, the large wooden door inching closer. Her heart raced behind the cold façade of the mansion that seemed to close in as they neared the walls. As the door creaked open, Leora was struck by the familiar smell of polished wood and expensive perfume, but tonight it felt too suffocating. Wayne didnt stop until they entered the grand foyer, where a figure stood waiting. Paula, Leora's stepmother, was there, ready to explode. Her fancy gown sparkled in the light, but Leora could only focus on her angry expression. Those eyes, they were serious, but there was relief in them. Then Wayne let Leora go, shoving her aside in such a way that she tripped and staggered to a stop way too close to where Paula stood. Leora sobbed and tried to wipe the running tears from her face with shaking hands as she tried to push herself back into a sitting position. "You ungrateful child!" Paula’ yelled, then there was a loud smack. Leora felt the slap burning on her cheek. The way her stepmother looked at her with daggers in her eyes, one perfectly manicured finger pointing right at her. "Do you even know what you have done?" Leora touched her cheek, fingers trembling as they felt the heat which radiated from where Paula had laid hands on her. She met her stepmother's eyes with so much defiance and deep hurt. Lynn, her steps-sister, was watching her from behind with a smirk on her face. Lynn laughed in her eyes, clearly loving what she saw.. Leora sighed deeply. "I just..." "You just what?" Paula interrupted and her voice was filled with hate. You just waltz away from here, away from your pack, from your duties, where you can get us all killed! "I didn't mean to..." "How dare you try to run away!" Leora flinched as her father's voice boomed from the doorway. Tall and rigid, Alpha Harold’s face was a mask of rage. His messy, graying hair and his robe didn’t fit quite right: he had been pulled from his sleep. “So you want us all to die?” he demanded, stepping closer. His gray stormy eyes–identical to hers, and once so kind—were now radiating the rage that had her trembling. “How dare you!" "But father, I..." "Silence!" Leora flinced as her father roared. "You are meant to be Alpha Allerick's mate! Don’t you dare to say no to this treaty!" Leora choked as she struggled to find her voice. “I didn't want this,” she said. I’ll never be his mate.” She made it through those years by holding on to hope of finding her mate. The one who will save her from this suffering. Her father had never hesitated to show his lack of admiration for her all throughout her childhood. He accused her of causing her mother's death, that she brought nothing but bad luck and misfortune to their home. Even in her own house, she was treated like an outsider, feeling the weight of shame and bitternes, as if she didn’t belong there. Paula and Lynn, on the other hand, had never failed to cause her pain. Leora totally loved every story about fated mates, of how the bonds were so strong, pure, and nothing could break them. But to have it taken away now? "Father, please," she pleaded. "There must be another way.” Her fathers eyes narrowed and he too took another step toward her. “You have no choice, Leora. You will do as you're told. He is our ally now. This marriage will save us.” "But what about me?" Leora's voice broke. "Don't I matter at all?" Her father looked at her with cold eyes.. “No, your feelings are simply irrelevant. This is about the pack. You will do your duty." Leora felt tears welling up in her eyelids, and she tried really hard to hold it back. Not now, no weakness. She looked over to Lynn, who was still smirking, her arm crossed on her chest. Lynn's beautiful blonde hair fell over her, making her like a total angel, but Leora knew better. “You see, dear," Paula said in that annoyingly sweet voice of hers, " You can finally be useful at something." Leora gritted her teeth, her nails biting into the palms of her fists. She was mad at how unfair this whole thing was, but she knew she could never get away. This nightmare… no amount of begging could change it. "Wayne," Alpha Harold commanded, his voice devoid of any warmth, "take her to her room and make sure she stays there until Allerick's beta arrives." Leora's shoulders slumped as the last bit of hope drained from her. She felt a heavy, sinking feeling in her chest, a sense of betrayal that cut deeper than any physical wound. Her father had truly abandoned her, casting her aside like she was nothing. "Yes, Alpha," Wayne responded, stepping forward and gripping Leora's arm once more. His touch was firm, but not harsh, as if he understood the gravity of the situation but had no power to change it. “You've always been a liability," this time Lynn scoffed. “At least you’ll be out of here pretty soon.” Leora glanced up at her father, praying in the back of her mind that he would show some mercy. She searched his face, her heart pounding, looking for any evidence of the love she had thought he had for her. No, his face looked like a rock, and his eyes were as cold as ice. Alpha Harold demanded no warmth in his voice "Wayne take her to her room, Make sure she doesn’t leave until Allerick’s beta comes. Wayne continued, "Yes, Alpha," he then grabbed Leora's arm again. The grip was firm but not harsh, as though he realised the situation and could do nothing about it. While Wayne was dragging her away, tears were rolling down her face. Tomorrow was the day she had feared for the longest time, the day she would be taken to Alpha Allerick. Just the whispers of his ruthlessness and curse that followed him were enough to scare her. She knew that her life would never be the same. What will my future be like now? Is there any way to run away from this fate?
