Chapter 28
Jabari held onto Wind’s reins, calling Isika, shouting at her until his voice broke. She didn’t even seem to notice, riding blindly forward, but Wind began to resist her, refusing to move. She looked down at him, confused, then drove her heels into his sides. Jabari tried to stop the horse, but couldn’t. Wind was strong, and he was going where Isika wanted him to.
“Isika!” Ben screamed, “Isika, stop this! Come back!” He had dismounted, and walked along the other side of Wind, holding on to a corner of Isika’s tunic. She didn’t even glance at her brother.
“Isika, don’t you act like you can’t hear me!” Jabari shouted. “Get back here, your horse is distressed. Don’t drive him into this poison.”
