Chapter 1
A crow soared into the sky, its harsh cry echoing as it flew over the thick forest atop the mountain. At the foot of the mountain, a great crowd of people gathered, both men and women. Today was significant; the future protectors of the world from the rising darkness would be chosen. Gaia sat comfortably on a stone chair that resembled a throne. Her gray, rough hair partially obscured her lined face, and her bright eyes stared into the distance. Clad in a black robe, she exuded the aura of an ancient witch. Beside her stood the Druid of Eldoria, a striking young woman in her late thirties. Her long black hair cascaded to her waist, framing an angelic face that captivated all who looked upon her. Before them stood a multitude of eager young men and women, their hearts pounding with anticipation. “My lady, the people are prepared for this event. Shall we begin the test?” the Druid asked, glancing at Gaia. After a long moment of contemplation, Gaia blinked slowly. “Let the test begin,” she said. The young Druid took a small horn from her waist and blew it. Instantly, the crowd fell silent, their eyes filled with determination, standing erect like soldiers awaiting their general's command. She turned to Gaia for permission, and with a slight nod, the Druid addressed the candidates. “Today, after so many years, the seal of the Dark One is weakening, and I fear the Dark Druid will soon be freed,” she announced. A gasp rippled through the crowd; the memory of the Dark Druid’s devastation lingered like a shadow. “We gather to select seven among you who will bear the weight of our world’s protection. You will face trials that will test your strength and resolve. If you succeed, you will become one of the Chosen Seven.” “Step forward if you are ready to participate in this event,” the Druid called. One by one, the young men and women stepped forward, their hearts racing with a mix of excitement and trepidation. The young Druid smiled faintly, recalling her own eagerness in those early days. She had once longed to save the kingdom from dark forces, but now she understood that every step came with a price; a sacrifice had to be made. If only they knew... “The rules are simple: you must run through the deep forest to the mountaintop. If you stop, you die, and you must also avoid traps along the way. At the top of the mountain are seven stones. You can only pick one; after that, you must place the stone on the Altar of Lord Aethon, where you will receive your magical ability and become one of the Chosen,” the Druid instructed. “Before the test begins, each candidate should drink from the water of Aquilu Aeruvi to seek the blessings of Aethon.” The sacred fountain sparkled in the sunlight, its waters shimmering like liquid diamonds. Amidst the crowd, a beautiful girl with bright blue eyes and blonde hair tied neatly in a bun stepped forward, her red cloak billowing slightly in the breeze. She approached the fountain, the regal air around her unmistakable. “You shouldn't join them, Princess Scarlett. It's dangerous,” Amelia, her maid, implored, her voice laced with worry as she grasped Scarlett's arm. “Don’t worry, I can take care of myself,” Scarlett assured her, a fierce determination shining in her eyes. “I’m a princess, and I must be ready to protect my people. It would be a shame if I couldn’t defend them.” Before Amelia could protest further, Scarlett joined the other candidates, kneeling by the fountain. She cupped her hands, the cool water glistening as she brought it to her lips. The moment the liquid touched her tongue, a surge of energy coursed through her, igniting her spirit. The Druid took a horn and blew it. The sound resonated through the forest, marking the beginning of the trial. As the last note faded, a pulse of energy rippled through the air, igniting urgency among the candidates. “Run!” the young Druid shouted, her voice slicing through the tension. Scarlett surged forward, her heart racing as she plunged into the underbrush of the forest. The scent of moss and damp earth filled her nostrils, and the sound of branches snapping underfoot accompanied her rapid sprint. The weight of her royal status pushed her not only to survive but to excel. Other candidates raced ahead, each fueled by the determination to be among the Chosen. The path twisted and turned, shadows dancing around her as sunlight barely filtered through the thick canopy. Scarlett focused intently, dodging low-hanging branches and ducking beneath roots that threatened to trip her. Suddenly, a scream pierced the air, jolting her from her focus. She turned to see a young boy ensnared by a thick green vine, desperately being pulled toward a gaping maw of darkness hidden among the trees. Panic surged through her, a visceral knot tightening in her stomach. She felt the weight of his fear wash over her, but the heavy responsibility of her mission pressed down on her shoulders. For a fleeting moment, her heart wavered. Should she help him? The thought flickered like a candle in the wind, but the urgency of the trial clawed at her resolve. With a heavy heart, she forced herself to look away, her breath hitching as she sprinted past him. Guilt gnawed at her, but she knew she had to stay focused. As she continued, her determination solidified. Every step felt like a battle against both the forest and her own conscience. The foot of the mountain came into view, and adrenaline surged through her veins. She pushed herself to speed up, each heartbeat a reminder of the stakes at hand—her future, her people, and the looming darkness threatening them all. Suddenly, bat-like creatures swooped down from the treetops, their wings casting ominous shadows over the forest floor. Scarlett barely had time to react as one lunged at her, its claws outstretched. She ducked just in time, feeling the rush of air as it missed her by inches. Heart pounding, she sprinted faster, weaving through the underbrush, her instincts kicking in. The chaotic symphony of danger filled the air as shrieks echoed around her. Other candidates struggled too, some falling behind as the creatures picked off the slower ones. Scarlett's focus sharpened; she couldn’t afford to be distracted. She recalled the Druid's warning: "If you stop, you die." The thought propelled her forward, each step fueled by the fear of failure. Finally, she reached the foot of the mountain and looked up, realizing it towered higher than she had imagined. Taking a deep breath, she began her ascent, gripping the rough stones as she pulled herself up. The climb was steep, and the jagged edges cut into her palms, but she pressed on. As she climbed, the air grew thinner, and the sounds of the forest faded, replaced by the echo of her own heartbeat. Suddenly, a loud rumble echoed from above. Scarlett glanced up just in time to see loose rocks tumbling down the slope. Instinctively, she moved aside, narrowly avoiding the cascade. Letting out a sigh of relief, she felt her heart racing. She stretched her hands upward to climb higher but lost her balance. Scarlett screamed as she felt her grip slip. Time seemed to slow as she tumbled down the mountainside, the world spinning in a chaotic blur. Panic surged through her as she grasped for anything to hold onto, but the mountain offered no mercy. Just as she thought she would crash into the ground below, a strong hand shot out, catching her wrist and halting her fall. Scarlett gasped, looking up to see a fellow candidate—a tall young man with dark hair and determined green eyes—holding her firmly. “I’ve got you!” he shouted over the sound of skidding rocks. With a powerful pull, he hoisted her back up to safety. “Thank you!” Scarlett breathed, her voice shaky with relief. She regained her composure, glancing around. “What’s your name?” she asked, her heart still racing. “Mine is Liam. We have to get going; we can't stop until we reach the Aethon Temple. If we stop, the water from the sacred fountain will surely kill us,” he said, resuming his climb. Scarlett followed suit, her heart pounding. She hadn’t realized the water from the sacred fountain was this dangerous. Legend said it killed those who did not focus on their goals or fulfill their promises. Some called it Aquilu-votàra—the fountain of oath. As they climbed together, her hands grew raw and bloody, but she pressed on. Soon, they reached the summit of the mountain. At the summit, the air was stagnant and still, a heavy silence enveloping the space. Scarlett didn’t have time to admire the breathtaking surroundings; at the center of the summit were seven glowing orbs, pulsating with ethereal light. She looked at the candidates around her—more than twenty, but only seven orbs awaited them. That meant... Scarlett's heart raced as she immediately lunged forward.
