Chapter 4

I was on my way out of the office after a very hectic day at work when a scream startled me. At first, I made to ignore it since that was obviously of no concern to me.But then, the scream came again, a lot louder this time, and then, there was absolute silence. This time, the scream was so vivid that I could place my hands on who it came from. It was Maya!I took in a deep breath as I tried to figure out what to do. My kind of person found it difficult to show any form of affection because, according to my mindset, women were just there to live off you. And yes, they were also pretenders who sneak into your life to suck you dry. But then, this was my personal assistant, and it was obvious that she was in trouble.I took a few steps backward and finally swirled around, hastily making my way to her office. Surprisingly, my heart was beating out of my chest and worry was beginning to take the better part of me.Maya is a young girl I consider to be smart and highly articulate for her age.Her manner of approach in situations leaves me in awe occasionally. This seemed to be the major reason why I was compelled to head over and discover what might have gone wrong.“Maya!” I called out when I saw her lying unconscious on the chair. Her head was tilted backwards, and her eyes were shut, as though she was deeply asleep.I rushed over to her, almost at the verge of having a panic attack.“Maya! What’s wrong?” I asked, shaking her fervently and hoping she would stir. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen…I carried her in my arms and hurriedly ran out of the office premises and over to the garage. I revved up the car engine and drove out, almost hitting a security guard who was standing by the entrance. We finally got to the hospital, and she was taken in for treatment. After a couple of hours, the doctor walked out with a small smile on his face.“Will she be okay?” I asked since that was all I needed to hear. She was an extremely valuable person in my company, and I wasn’t ready to lose her and her skills.“She will be fine. All she needs is rest”, the doctor replied, still wearing that soft smile on his face.I nodded quietly and started walking away, causing the doctor to stare at me in wonder.“Excuse me, you brought her here. Shouldn’t you be here to see her wake up?” The doctor walked over to me, searching through my eyes as though the answer to his question lay there.I rolled my eyes at him, withholding the nerve to throw a punch across his face. What does he take me for? A servant?“You know, bringing her here was a mistake in the first place. At this point, I'm not concerned with what happens to her”, I chimed out, wearing a deep scowl and clenching my fist.I barged out of the hospital premises and drove back home to prepare for the important board meeting I had scheduled for the next day.The board meeting was going to precede the major deal with another company. Most people preferred to call me a workaholic, but I define myself as someone who craves the best out of anything. To achieve that, I don’t mind going past the edge…as long as it gets me what I want. My heart drifted off to thoughts of Maya and I picked up my phone, playing with it for a while since I couldn’t bring myself to call. After several minutes of going around the cycle of picking up my phone and not doing anything with it, I finally placed a call across to her.It rang for three times and then she picked up.“Good day, sir”, she greeted, sounding quite low and solemn.“Maya, I just called to remind you of how we should get prepared fortomorrow. It would be a very long day for us because we have a boardmeeting and another meeting with to seal a deal with a company”, I said theminute she picked up the call. The line went silent for a couple of minutes, after which I heard her voice that sounded like a whisper.“Noted, sir”.I dropped the call and settled in to get ready for the next day’s events. I might have sounded cruel and insensitive, especially because she had just gotten treatment earlier at the hospital, but I didn’t care much.Maya was extremely valuable and her presence during the meetings tomorrow would make a great positive difference. The next morning, I woke up with a new surge of energy bubbling in my soul. For a long time, I’ve awaited this day since signing this deal with one of the biggest tech companies in the world would elevate my standard and the position of my company as well. It was a collaboration I’ve always looked forward to and now that it was here, I was super elated.Just as I got clad in my black tuxedo and silver glittery brogue shoes, I couldn’t help but think of Maya and what she was doing presently.A massive scowl spread across my face the minute I tried to think of the possibility of her missing the day’s event.“She better not!” I declared silently, already getting enraged by mere thoughts of it.I took everything about my company so seriously and getting things messed up because of a mere assistant was what I would never accept.I grabbed my keys, sprayed my favorite cologne, and walked out of my house, sniffing in the calming air that came with the morning. About thirty minutes later, I arrived at the company, and to my greatest shock, Maya was nowhere in view.
