Chapter 6

The entire day went well and, even, better than I had thought. Maya did absolutely well in the presentations and the representatives from the Oasis company didn’t have any form of doubts before sealing the deal. It was a great thing of joy and I almost felt the need to scream out of excitement, but I struggled to comport myself and retain just the smiles. After they left, I turned to look at Maya who slowly walked away, not sparing me a single glance. I observed a change in her attitude ever since the start of the day, but I shoved it aside as something unimportant. The hate she had for me was so obvious. I could feel it in the pit of my stomach. But then, the way an assistant felt shouldn’t be of any importance. As long as my company was making progress, every other thing could go down the drain…My excitement, though, was short-lived when a quick thought crossed my mind A small frown appeared on my face immediately, and my heart skipped a beat. I was 40 already, but there was no heir to take over everything I’m currently working for. Since I felt on top of the world, being listed among the successful companies in the country, I couldn’t deny the fact that my life lacked something important. Thoughts of this usually got me so restless and the only way to get better was spending some time at the bar. At this, I grabbed my keys and left the company premises, making my way to the bar in the middle of the city. I felt greatly overwhelmed and exhausted that for a moment, I didn’t think about my company. It got into the dimly lit bar, getting greeted by the lively atmosphere and music that could easily make one forget the sorrows that plagued their heart. Slouching into the chair, I gestured for the bar attendant, who hurriedly strolled over to me. After making an order for a couple of drinks, I fed my eyes with the mind-bending activities that were currently ongoing. Couples were sitting in various corners, giggling and whispering into each other's ears. There were other men like me, probably lost in sorrows, they just sat and sipped from their glass of wine. I sighed deeply as a glass of whiskey was dropped on my table. I quickly gulped it down and gestured for the bar attendant to top it up. Somehow, I lost track of how many shots I had taken, but next, I felt my head swirling. There was an explosion of excitement in my spirit and a name that didn’t seem to leave my mind; Maya. Jerking up from the couch, I sauntered towards the exit. I had no idea where I was heading, but somehow, it felt as though I had a particular direction in my head. I drove and didn’t stop until I got to the driveway of a small building, with flowers at the entrance. There was a bright light inside the house, and that meant that she was awake. It was weird to see how her address got stuck in my head. I had seen it clearly noted on the file she submitted for her job application. Somehow, I recalled every bit of it. I stared at her door for a while, staggering and trying so hard to stop myself from losing my stance. A small smile curved on my lips as I finally knocked on the door. A couple of minutes later, I heard slight footsteps and then, the clicking sound of the doorknob. The minute she saw me, she froze.“Hi Maya”, I muttered and staggered, almost falling to the ground. I felt a warm hand around my wrist, abruptly stopping me from losing my stance. Slowly, I lifted my head and looked into her eyes that were filled with curiosity.“Sir… Daniel…”, she gasped under her breath while I pushed her aside and walked into her apartment.“What are you doing here?” She asked, with a voice laced with shock, fear, and concern. I chuckled calmly as I stared into her eyes, with desires burning through my soul.“I came…to see you”, I mumbled in my drunken state and laughed again. She made to talk, but I leaned closer and took hold of her lips, prompting her to swallow back the words she had wanted to utter.
