“The guards outside won't let you escape,” Melissa said. “So I suggest you let go of the railing, come back inside, and let me check your injuries.” She approached cautiously.
To be honest, she was still a little afraid of Myra after their last encounter. It wasn't every day that you tried talking to someone who had nearly attacked you. The memory still lingered, making Melissa uncomfortable whenever she was left alone with her.
“Who are you?” Myra asked cautiously, her eyes filled with suspicion as she watched every movement Melissa made.
Melissa cleared her throat. “I'm your doctor. The bullet that hit your leg contained wolfsbane, so your recovery is slower than normal. I suggest you rest if you want to heal properly.” But Myra showed no signs of calming down.
Melissa sighed. “For goodness sake, if we wanted to imprison you, you'd already be locked up. Stop overreacting for a second and think logically. If you jump from there, you'll probably reopen your stitches. Your wolf is weak right now, and we both know that's a terrible idea.”
Stuffing her hands into her coat pockets, Melissa sat on a nearby chair.
Myra remained silent for a while. After thinking it over, she finally let go of the railing and sat back down on the bed. A hint of embarrassment flashed across her face.
“You can check the wound.” Melissa chuckled softly.
For some reason, Myra reminded her of a stubborn cat that had caused trouble and was now pretending nothing had happened.
“Good choice.” After checking the bandages, Melissa nodded in satisfaction.
“Don't worry. Nobody can hurt you here. You're under Matteo's protection.”
Myra blinked in confusion.
“Matteo?”
“Yes. Matteo. The Lycan King. Your savior. His Majesty. Whatever title you prefer.” Melissa smiled. “You've already met him before, haven't you? He is your ma–”
Before she could continue, the door opened. Matteo walked inside.
He had clearly just returned from work. His shirt sleeves were rolled up, and there was a faint trace of exhaustion on his face. Myra froze a moment, how could someone look this good after working all day?
Melissa noticed her staring and immediately smirked. Coughing lightly she snapped Lyra from her trance. She quickly looked away immediately. “Oh?” Melissa teased. “Someone looks nervous.”
Myra felt her ears grow warm. “That wasn't what I was doing.”
“Of course,” Melissa replied with obvious disbelief pointing to her chin, Myra’s was confused till she touched her own chin, only to feel a line of saliva, s**t! She screamed inwardly, she literally drooled, she lowered her head out of embarrassment silently praying for the ground to swallow her.
“Earth to Myra. Earth to Myra.” Melissa poked her head. “No need to be shy, after all I don't think anyone can withstand my brother's charm,”
Melissa stood up waving her hands, “Well, I'll leave you two alone. My mate misses me so much, try not to cause any disasters while I'm gone.”
“Melissa—” Myra called out, but she was already gone.
The room fell silent and the atmosphere became tense and awkward. Very awkward. She cleared her throat. “Thank you... for not turning me in, and...”
“And... sorry.” She said the latter part nervously,
“Sorry for what?” He raised an eyebrow.
“Ermm.. for causing trouble. For trying to run away. For everything.” f**k! Why was she nervous, Matteo slowly walked closer, his hands in his pockets, smiling faintly.
“You really think that's something you need to apologize for?”
Myra lowered her gaze. Before she could answer, Matteo gently lifted her chin so she would look at him.
“Look at me.
Myra reluctantly raised her eyes. For a moment, neither of them spoke. His brown eyes boring her emerald eyes. Myra felt a tingling sensation which made her want to go closer to him. Matteo’s rationality was weakening to longer he held her, but he couldn't bear to let go. She was like a poison, she was like a poison, eating him up slowly and he was helpless against it.
He leaned in further, his breath touching her face, carrying a mix of tobacco and sandalwood mixed, intoxicating and deadly. His lips brushed her earlobe, “Did you miss me?” Did she miss him? She was confused herself. The feeling was similar to what she once felt for Aiden, yet somehow different
Before Myra could figure out why her heart was acting strangely, Matteo gently tapped her forehead before ruffling her hair affectionately. His fingers brushed away several strands of ginger hair that had fallen across her face
The sunlight pouring through the window reflected against her hair, making it glow softly. Despite her pale complexion, she still looked beautiful.
Matteo walked toward the bedside table and dropped a phone onto it
"I removed everything" Myra looked at him blankly
"The news, the videos, the comments. Every post about you has been taken down"
"No one will dare spread those rumors again. As for your troublesome sister..." his lips curled slightly. "Let's just say I gave her something else to worry about"
Myra froze. Nobody had ever stood up for her before. Not her parents. Not her mate.
Yet this man had quietly handled everything behind her back without asking for anything in return
"You don't need to worry anymore," Matteo continued. "Nobody dares bully you again"
Her eyes gradually became moist. She lowered her head, staring at the blanket covering her lap, lost and confused. Unsure how she was supposed to react
A strange warmth spread through her chest, the tears started falling slowly. One drop. Two drops. Three drops
Before she knew it, she was sobbing uncontrollably Years of pain, humiliation, loneliness, and suffering burst out all at once
Matteo immediately panicked "Hey" He moved closer "Why are you crying?" Myra didn’t answer. The tears refused to stop
Matteo became even more flustered "Did I say something wrong? Did I scare you?" Myra only cried harder.
Matteo ran a hand through his hair. For someone who could command an entire kingdom without blinking, dealing with one crying woman was proving impossible
"I'm sorry," he said helplessly
He genuinely didn't know what he had done wrong He awkwardly grabbed a handkerchief and tried wiping her tears, but the more he wiped, the more they came
Just as Matteo was on the verge of losing his mind, the infirmary door suddenly opened. Melissa walked in together with Dante and Carl The three immediately froze.
Myra was crying and Matteo was standing beside her looking completely helpless. Melissa slowly turned toward him
"Ten minutes"
"Ten f*****g minutes"
"I leave you alone with Myra for ten minutes and somehow you manage to make her cry" Matteo opened his mouth and closed it again. Because honestly, he had no idea why she was crying either.
Melissa sighed dramatically before pushing him aside. "Move" She sat beside Myra and immediately wrapped her arms around her. "There, there" Myra buried her face in Melissa's shoulder while trying to calm herself.
Melissa shot Matteo a murderous glare, "Scram! Shoo, go and talk about your work elsewhere"
Dante almost laughed while Carl quickly looked away. Matteo stood up unwillingly and wanted to argue but seeing Myra cling to Melissa's shoulder, he couldn't bring himself to argue.
His heart tightened slightly. Dante tapped him on the shoulder. "Come on, Your Majesty" Matteo sighed heavily before following Dante and Carl outside. The moment the door closed behind them, the helpless expression on his face disappeared. His eyes immediately turned cold. The atmosphere around him changed instantly
