Chapter 1
The full moon shone brightly in the sky.
Maria Gowan runs through foggy woods, with branches tearing at her clothes and her boots hitting in the ground infested with dried leaves. Brambles s***h at her hands. Her breath tears in my throat. It hurts.Everything hurts. But this is what she does. She runs. She can do this. She has to find the Lord Wolf.
A dark Alpha guard, one sworn to serve Alpha Garrick, pursues her. He's a hefty man with a shaved scarred head. A large root from a tall pine tree catches Maria's foot. A sob escapes her lips as she falls to the ground and rolls down the sloppy earth.. The guardstops at the top and looks down to where Maria has rolled to. Maria feels the world spinning around her as she places her hand on her knees to help her in getting up.
The guard jumps high in the air and lands on his knee. Maria staggers away from the guard, who landed in front of her. She squats and grabs the handle of her Elven short sword in the sheath attached to her leather boots. She pulls it out and stands in a defensive mode against the guard. She has both Elven short swords at her chest and stomach with both sharp edges pointing at the guard.
The guard spreads his fingers and long sharp claws extend out of his fingernails.
"Give me the amulet and I'll give you a merciful death," The guard threatens.
The werewolf guard releases a deep low growl andin a split second he's in front of her, slashing his claws at her neck. Maria protects her neck with her short swords. Sparks fly out of the sharp metal as the guard's claws come in contact with it.
Maria stumbles backward at the impact of the guard. Before she is able to regain her stance, with inhumane speed, he slices her arm with his claws. Maria hisses in pain and looks at her bleeding arm. Red blood pools out of the three claw marks on her arm.Maria screams as she charges at the werewolf, plunging him with her sword but he dodges effortlessly.
Maria stabs the guard's stomach but he swiftly turns, evading the sword before he grabs her neck and raises her up on the air. Maria chokes as she feels the air drain out of her lungs. The swords fall out of Maria's hands onto the ground. She kicks her legs frivolously, trying to kick his shin but she is too far to deliver a kick.
"Now your death will be for nothing. Just like your brothers and sisters."
The guard opens his mouth, widening it enough for his canine teeth to elongate. Jordan sprints out from behind one of the trees. He shoves the guard but it backfires, instead, sending Jordan to the ground. Pink flower petals attach itself to his blonde short hair. He grunts in pain not expecting that.
Despite his mother's nagging, he came to the woods to take pictures of the full moon for a picture competition. He has always been fascinated about the moon and it has always been his concepts in any picture competition he participates in. He was totally lost in his world before his attention was caught short when he heard the scream of a woman. Scared of what might have happened, he decided to check it out only for him to see a werewolf attacking this mysterious woman. He's not a werewolf and he does not have the strength to just watch and let the woman be killed so he tries to help which clearly didn't go as he planned.
"And who is this? One of your brothers?" The guard chuckles. "After I kill him, I'll kill you."
The guard goes in for a deadly bite at Maria's neck and Jordan jumps on his back, holding his neck tightly. The guard lets go of Maria. Maria falls on the ground and inhales deeply trying to get as much air as possible into her system. The guard turns around, struggling to throw Jordan off him.
"Over there. There she is." Two other dark Alpha guards arrive at the top. One of them points at Maria. One of them, a werewolf quickly races down the sloppy land while the other, a human gently walks down.
Maria can't handle these extra two guards. She has to act quickly or she's dead and everything would have been for nothing. She musters her strength and gets on her feet.
The guard grabs Jordan's shoulders, piercing his claws inside. Jordan shouts in pain as he feels blood drip out.He drags Jordan and slams him on the ground. The guard raises his clawed hands to s***h Jordan's face and then Maria sings a slow melodic howl-like music. Her silver hair gently elevates off her shoulders
The guard stops halfway. He slowly lowers his hand and turns to face Maria. He's caught in a trance as the clouds on the night sky seem to fume rapidly and shine brightly on the night sky. Maria's pupils morphs into a wolf's type, green, and slowly the pupils turn to a vertical position. The guard's eyes slowly bulges.Maria's pupils dilate while the guard's brown pupils flood the iris before returning to its normality. The clouds stop shining brightly and fuming, return to its normal way in the night sky. The guard has been lured.A gift of Luna werewolves with the ability to make anyone be under their control until they die. Until the Luna werewolf dies the control is broken.
The guard's head slumps and slowly he turns around to face the incoming werewolf guard. He raises his head swiftly and attacks him, slashing aggressively at the werewolf guard. Maria's legs give way out of tiredness, then she falls on her knees. Confused by what he has seen, Jordan looks at the lured guard attacking his companion and Maria on the ground, trying to recover. What just happened he has no idea but he saw what she did to him.
The lured guard slashes his companion's throat. Blood spills out of the tender flesh of the guard's neck. The guard clasps his fingers around his bleeding throat but too late, the guard slumps on the ground and dies instantly. The human dark Alpha guard stops, scared that he is outmatched he flees. The lured guard attempts to follow him but Maria stops him.
"Stop. Don't follow him." Maria commands.
"Yes, Luna." The lured guard responds. He hurries over to Maria to help her on her feet.
Jordan sees the deep claw marks on Maria's arm..
"Your hand is bleeding," Jordan says.
The lured guard tears a shred of his cloth and gently ties it around the bleeding wound on Maria's arm.Maria winces when he tightens the clothe around the wound.
"It's my fault, Luna. Please forgive me." The luredguard apologizes.
Confused by anything that just happened, Jordan asks, "Why were these men after you? What did you to him?"
Maria ignores him and walks away with the luredguard. Jordan obstructs them, "Hey, I think I deserve an explanation after I just saved your life."
"If you don't move out of my way, I tell this guard to kill you." Maria threatens.
Jordan moves away. He can't believe this is the thanks he gets for risking his life to save this woman.
"Thank you." Maria says before she and the luredguard walk deep into the woods.
Jordan turns around and sees the dead body of the guard whose throat was slit. Slowly, he approaches the guard. He squats and pushes the guard to rest on his back. His bloody throat is slick with sand and dried grasses. He retches in disgust. Jordan is about to stand and suddenly, the dead guard grabs Jordan's wrist, piercing his claws inside Jordan's flesh. Blood spills out as Jordan tries to tear his arm away.
"Hel...p me." The guard chokes on his blood and dies before he releases his grasp on Jordan's wrist. The guard unexpectedly releases his grasp on Jordan and that instant Jordan pulls with much force. With nothing holding on him, Jordan stumbles back and falls on the ground. He looks at his bleeding wrist and winces at the pain caused by the guard.
Maria and the lured guard enters the street from the park end. They proceeded along a sliding scale of house sizes from pretty
workmen’s cottages through narrow three-story terraces to the large
detached Victorians at the Berth Hill Avenue end.
"What is your name?" Maria inquires.
"I'm called Calvin, Luna." The lured guard replies.
These were indisputably the best properties, their old brick glowing furnace red in spectacular contrast to the green of the elms that lined the road. They approach Xavier's Coffee Shop with small front gardens. Insects buzz around the streetlight illuminating the coffee shop quite a bit. Maria and Calvin stop in front of the door. Maria gently knocks on the glass door. There is no response. She taps her foot impatiently before she bangs on the door repeatedly. Calvin sees the light on the first floor turn.
"My Luna..." Calvin calls. Maria stops knocking, looks at him. Calvin points to the first floor. Maria looks up and sees the lights turned on. The coffee shop lights up which gets their attention. Xavier walks towards the door. He is dressed in pajamas. Xavier stops in front of the door without opening it. He adjusts his glasses with circle frames.
"Who are you? Do you know what the time is?" Xavier looks at them suspiciously. His thick British accent sounds.
"I need your help Lord Wolf Xavier." Maria says calmly.
Xavier tries his best to hide his surprise. He has never been called by that name for over a century.
"Yes, my name is Xavier but I'm not a Lord Wolf."
"I ask the Lord Wolf Xavier for his assistance."Maria says.
"I think you have me confused with somebody else. As you can see, I run a cafe."
"There's no confusion. I had help finding you." Maria takes out a folded photograph from her pocket.
She unfolds it and it's a noir photo of Xavier who still looks exactly the same but without his glasses. He's dressed in royal robes and stands in front of a giant wolf statue. He returns the photo and Maria pockets it back.
"It's good while it lasted." Xavier looks at Calvin. He notices his calm yet trance-like demeanor of thelured guard. "I take it that you lured him."
Xavier unlocks the glass door and opens it. Maria and Calvin hurry inside. Xavier closes the door and bolts it.
Maria looks around, taking in the well furnished cozy brown cafe.
"Come with me." Xavier says. He turns off the light and heads for the stairs at the end of the counter. Maria and Calvin follow him.
Xavier opens the door to the one room apartment before they walk in. It is a well maintained living room with shelves of books on a various subjects ranging from philosophy to astrophysics. There's not a television in sight. Xavier gestures to a seat. Maria sits down on a soft grey couch but Calvin stands beside her.
"So what brings you here?” Xavier sits down on a wooden chair.
"Bring me to the True Alpha," Maria says.
"What do you want with him?"
"It's time he took up the mantel and defeated Alpha Garrick."
"If that's all, then I can't do that. I'm sorry if you came here for nothing," Xavier apologizes.
Maria scoffs,"Just because you live in a privileged place doesn't mean it's easier for other people. For people like me. We are hunted like animals by Alpha Garrick and those who stand against him are beheaded to set an example." Maria feels the anger boiling up.
"I can't just tell him that he has a destiny to fulfill and that is by killing the tyrant Garrick."
"If you can't do it then I will. Tell me where he is."
Heavy marching sounds of boots echoes from outside. Maria, Xavier and Calvin rush to the windows to look out. They see dozens of men jogging down the road and side walk.
"It seems you have led more dark alpha guards here." Xavier says. "Now Garrick will know there's something important here if a Luna Wolf is here."
"We have to find him. He is our only hope to end this tyranny."
"It seems there's nothing that can be done. I promised his mother I would protect him and I have to do it. In the morning, we will find him. I know where he lives." Xavier stands up, "Shower. Get some rest. You look exhausted."
"That's not important right now." Maria remains stern.
"When we leave tomorrow, do you want to be a pointing beam for the Dark Alpha guards? Do as you wish." Xavier goes into a dark corridor which leads to his bedroom.
The moonlight appears to be gradually dimming in the woods. Jordan arrives at the tree where he kept his school bag. In his school bag is his canon camera, mobile phone and torchlight. He takes out his camera and torchlight. He hangs the camera on his neck before putting the bag on his shoulders before he proceeds down the dried leaves path.
He winces when he feels a sharp pain shoot in his wrist. He takes a look at the painful region. The painfulregion on his wrist has two swollen and reddish holes. He continues walking and views the photographs in the camera. There are different shots of the lunar full moon. For as long as he remembers, he has been obsessed about the moon. Researching about its creation, its effect on the planet and so many other exciting ideas about it.
He stops and looks up at it, stretching his hand at it as if he can almost reach it.
"Look around. There must be something we can find," Jordan hears an authoritative voice. Quickly he turns off the torchlight. He turns around but he sees no one. The light from the moon is not bright enough to see human figures. Jordan rushes and hides behinds a tree, squeezing himself so the tree gives him a good hiding spot. Jordan hears footsteps from behind him.
"There's nothing here. We have other places to check." A werewolf Alpha guard with a scar above his right eye says.
"I swear I saw a beam of light here." The human guard who ran away previously says.
"Come on, let's go."
The two guards walk away. Jordan releases a breathe of relief before he walks out of the tree and sees the two guards standing at a distance looking at him.
The human guard points, "That's the guy that was fighting Calvin. Get him!"
Immediately, Jordan sprints. He slaps the branches away from his face as he runs in unknown direction.
"Stop in the name of Alpha Garrick," the scarred werewolf commands.
Jordan keeps running, not in his mind to stop. The human guard stops. He takes out an arrow and attaches it to the sling of the bow. He drags the arrow before releasing it. The arrow shoots out and strikes a branch of tree above Jordan's head.
Jordan falls down but gets up quickly and continues running. He doesn't know where he is going. Everywhere is too dark to see anything. Jordan almost falls off the edge of a cliff but he quickly moves backward, picking a stone to fall over the end of the cliff. Jordan pants as he steps away. The guards arrive and Jordan turns around.
Jordan hears the sound of the stone he kicked splash into the river down below.
"There's nowhere else to run. You can either come with us willingly or we force you."
"I didn't do anything wrong." Jordan tries to explain.
"You can explain that back in the station."
Jordan looks behind him and back at the guards. There's no way he's going with them. He has heard stories about how people are tortured in the stations when they are taken by the dark Alpha guards.
He's sure there's a river below because of the sound he heard. Jordan hesitantly walks backward to the edge of the cliff. He takes in short rapid breathes before he lets himself fall backward. The guards rush towards him to grab him but too late. Jordan plummets downwards before he splashes inside the chilling river. Countless bubbles flows in the river as Jordan sinks down below.
Keeping their distance, the guards squints their eyes in the dark to see anything but it's too dark for them
"He must be in the river. Let's call reinforcements." The werewolf guards says.
The human guard looks down and sees a brown leatherwallet. He picks it up and opens it. He sees cash and Jordan's school ID card. He takes out his ID card and reads his location.
"Lowland Avenue, house number 12." The guard reads.
"What do you have there?" The werewolf guard asks.
"I know where he lives." The guard gives a small smile.
