The school day is finally over. For the first time in a long time, Courtney and her groupies have left me alone, I think to myself. Approaching the gates to leave finally I take one last look at the building behind me, this is the end of school. Now, onto the next chapter of my life. To say I was afraid to go home and find what was awaiting me was an understatement. I carried on walking off of school property when I heard the screech of car tyres behind me. I turned just in time to see a little white car coming straight for me.
I managed to move slightly out of the way, but the car still managed to drive over my left leg. Hearing the cracking and snapping of bones, I knew it was broken, I screamed out in pain but thankful that I was still alive. The pain was so intense that my vision started to blur until it all went dark.
I woke up to a mixture of noises I was unfamiliar with. There was beeping of machines, and it sounded like I was in a car of some sort. I look around a realise I'm strapped to a bed in the back of an ambulance. Behind my head, I can faintly hear someone talking about my vitals. That must be the paramedic. I feel like I am paralysed by my pain, barely able to keep my eyes open. Next thing I know, Bianca is in view, tears streaming down her face. I tried to reach out for her, but I just felt too weak. She mumbles to me, not realising I'm awake, "It's okay, Laurie, we will get you all the help you need. Aston is meeting us there. Please wake up for us, Laurie."This is all my fault." Sobbing now, Bianca grabs my hand and just holds on tight for the rest of the journey. I rest my eyes some more, trying to remember what happened to me.
I woke up not knowing when I blacked out again. I hear talking as I feel the bed. I'm on being pushed through what I think is the hospital corridors. Next thing I know, I'm pushed into a private room. Two nurses stand beside me and realise I'm awake. "Hey sweetie, it's okay, you're safe." she tells me sweetly when seeing the terrified look on my face. "Wwwwhat hhhhappened?" I stutter barely above a whisper. "You were in an accident, darling," the other nurse then answers, "Car came off of the road and hit you. You've had to have surgery, but you're in recovery now." She continues. Before I can say anything else, the door to the room opens, and Bianca and Aston walk in. Bianca is carrying a "get well soon" balloon and small bunny in a pink top saying the same. Aston standing next to her is holding the large bouquet of flowers I think I've ever seen. I can't help but notice how the flowers are my favourite, red, white roses with sunflowers. the perfect contrast of colour. The nurses quickly excuse themselves, obviously thinking that Aston and Bianca are family. Bianca walks towards me, "Laurie, thank god you're okay!" she sighs. "I was so worried about you when I found you like that on the side of the road." Aston comes forward now as well, "We thought we were going to lose Laurie, " He admits. I look up at Aston in astonishment. Until this morning, I don't think he knew I existed. Now he's scared he's going to lose me. He notices the confused look on my face and leans forward gently, carrassesing my cheek. "I've only just found you, I can't possibly lose you before getting to know you." he seductively whispers. Bianca breaks the tension with a little chuckle to the other side of me. "Brother, you can't claim Laurie just because you have the hots for her." Bianca continues to chuckle. Aston starts to blush but tells his sister to shut it. I look between the two trying to figure out if I'm dreaming. 'No way, Aston has a crush on me,' I think to myself. How can the hottest guy in school be crushing on me? the Dawson families adoptive slave.
Just then, a flicker of fear comes across my face as I think about the Dawson family. Aston catches it in the corner of his eye. "What's the matter, Laurie baby?" I look dumbfounded by his nickname for me but quickly shake the thoughts out of my head. I tried to get up, but remember, the nurse said I had surgery. I noticed the large cast on my left leg from just above the knee down. "This can't be happening to me," I whisper under my breath. "Laurie, please talk to us, tells us what's going on," Aston asks sincerely. "The Dawsons are going to kill me," I admit, "I'm not allowed out other than to go to school and back. I'm supposed to be cooking them dinner and cleaning the house. If I'm not there to do it, they will never grant me my freedom." The words just fly out of me before I can even think about what I'm saying. Bianca and Aston look at each other with a horrified look, and then both look towards me determined. "You don't need to worry about that anymore, baby," Aston says to me, whilst holding my hand, trying to reassure me. " I was so close..." I tell them. With this, both of them pull a chair next to my bed and listen intently, asking for the whole story.
After explaining how I can't remember my parents or my birth name or how I even become to being in the Dawsons care. The two look towards each other with a flurry of rage. Just then, Aston stands up and forcefully exclaims, "You are free now. They will give you everything owed to you, including your freedom." I look at him in shock, I dunno what to say to him they will never allow it. Not now I've broken their rules. Before I have chance to say anything else, Aston storms out the door like a man on a mission. Worriedly, I turn towards Bianca, who has a small smile on her face. "I don't understand what's happening." I say to Bianca.
