Chapter 2

618 Words
It was always like this. Robert would always choose Esther over me because he hated me. When his father went bankrupt, my father acquired his company, forcing Robert's father into a corner. He fell into despair, drinking heavily until he died in a car crash, while his mother jumped from a building. At that time, we were dating. We were forced to break up by my father's demands. I knelt in the snow for three days and nights, begging my father to give him a chance to start over. Since then, my knees would hurt terribly on rainy days. My father agreed, on the condition that I marry William Lewis, the eldest son of the Lewis family, and never contact Robert again. Under my father's manipulation, Robert was given a failing company. I secretly transferred thirty million to him as startup capital, though he was too proud to accept it at the time. But now, he refused to pay the same amount just to save my life. He was smart in business, and within two years, he turned that failing company into a strong and prosperous one. When he finally succeeded, the first thing he did was seek revenge on me. Robert forced the Lewis family to cancel our engagement and threatened my father. He married me. But he had hated me long before that. During the five years of our marriage, every month, he brought a different woman home, forcing me to kneel on the floor and watch as he tangled with other women. My heart had long been numb. At first, I thought we could go back to how we were before. But I was wrong. Robert squeezed my neck and pinned me to the bed, his eyes full of hatred. "Mary, your family killed my parents. You all deserve to die! You need to atone for your sins!" That day, he nearly strangled me to death. In my hazy memory, I vaguely recalled something. Back in college, I wanted to drink bubble tea from a nearly bankrupt bubble tea shop. Robert talked to the owner for a long time and eventually bought the shop. Later, he even learned how to make it himself and would make me the tea every once in a while. After his family's bankruptcy, the tea shop closed down as well. On our first anniversary, I asked him if he could make me another cup. He said, "Mary, you're so disgusting." He would never let me get pregnant because he thought I was dirty, but he refused to use protection because he liked the feeling. So, he forced me to take contraceptive pills, one after another. My body had long since given up. The doctor said that if I lost this baby, I might never be able to have children again. So, I wanted to keep him and bring him safely to the world. But now, it seemed I could keep nothing, not the bubble tea shop, and neither my baby. Esther appeared three years ago. She was bright, smiling all the time, and full of life, just like how I used to be. Robert repeated everything we did during our passionate time together with Esther. While I was entertaining clients, drinking until my stomach bled, he was taking Esther to Finland to see the Northern Lights. On his birthday, I cooked him a full meal and made a small cake, hoping to ease the tension between us. I waited all night, only to see Esther's post on social media, showing her and Robert at a hotel. Robert had his eyes closed, fresh hickeys on his neck. Esther's caption was "Birthday gift. I'm giving myself to you. Do you like it?"
