Chapter 1
The kidnapper gripped my chin, his dirty hand groping my chest as he sneered.
"Mrs. Griffin, you look so beautiful. I've heard Robert's favorite is you. Don't worry, we just want the money."
When had I ever been humiliated like this?
A wave of nausea surged in my stomach. I wanted to turn my face away, but I was tied to the chair and couldn't move.
Tears streamed down my face as I pleaded with the kidnappers, "I have money, I have money. Please, let me go."
The kidnapper leisurely opened my phone, flashing a wicked smile. "Don't worry, Mrs. Griffin. As long as Robert is willing to pay thirty million to save you, we'll let you go."
My heart sank.
Robert Griffin hated me deeply. He wouldn't save me.
I shook my head frantically, terror overwhelming me. I trembled and begged the kidnappers, "Robert doesn't like me. He likes Esther. You won't get a penny by using me to threaten him! Listen to me, I have money…"
Before I could finish, another kidnapper covered my mouth, muffling my cries.
The younger kidnapper spoke impatiently, "Why are we wasting time talking to her? Let's just get the ransom. After this job, we're done."
The leader had already dialed Robert's number.
My heart dropped to the floor.
He dialed several times, but no one answered.
On the fifth try, Robert finally picked up, his voice filled with impatience.
"Mary, can you stop bothering me for now? Esther is in a good mood today. Don't disturb us."
He tried to hang up, but I quickly pleaded into the phone.
"Robert, please don't hang up. I've been kidn*pped. They want thirty million in ransom. I don't want to die. Please, help me."
I was terrified. Normally, I could never bring myself to beg, but I hadn't expected something like this to happen to me. Robert was my only hope now.
There was a noise on the other end, and a sweet, high-pitched voice came through. "Mary's been kidn*pped? Where are the kidnappers? Why are they silent?"
It was Esther Wallace.
I suddenly lifted my head, my eyes red as I looked at the kidnappers. I shouted desperately, "You have to talk! If you talk, Robert will save me! You'll get the money!"
The kidnappers froze, staring at me without speaking. The room was eerily quiet.
"Enough, Mary. What game are you playing now?"
Robert's voice was full of anger.
I didn't know why the kidnappers suddenly stopped talking, but right now, I needed Robert to help me.
I cried helplessly into the phone. "Robert, I know you hate me, but I'm carrying your child. Please, I beg you, save me."
I had just gotten the pregnancy test results. I'd left them in the bedroom drawer and hadn't yet had the chance to tell Robert.
The baby was innocent, and all I could hope for was that Robert would save me for the sake of the child.
"It's just thirty million. You can afford that, Robert. I'll pay you back, I swear."
I said urgently, my heart racing. I could only pray t hat he would believe me, remembering our past.
The phone buzzed, and faintly, I heard Esther's voice.
"Robert, look, the sun's about to rise."
Her sweet voice was mixed with the laughter.
Robert muttered a quick "Mm" before coldly saying to me,
"Mary, stop being foolish. Do you think I'm still that naive fool from seven years ago, the one you played with? To keep me, you'll even make up lies about having a child? You really have no shame."
Beep! Beep!
The call ended.
I knew it. There was no hope left for me.
