Chapter 1: A Marriage of Ash and Stone
The Grand Throne Hall of the Aurelia Palace sparkled with the light of a thousand candles. The royal orchestra played a majestic, soaring melody, but to Princess Elena, the grand celebration felt like nothing short of a funeral for her freedom.
Elena stood before the massive crystal mirror, adjusting her lavender silk gown, which was meticulously embroidered with threads of pure gold. The dress was undeniably breathtaking, cascading behind her like a royal peacock’s tail, complementing the soft golden locks that fell elegantly over her shoulders. Her blue eyes, reminiscent of a clear lake on a winter day, reflected a calm serenity. Yet, beneath that placid surface, a tempest of anxious thoughts raged.
"Are you ready, Your Highness?" her personal maid, Alicia, asked in a trembling tone as she carefully placed the delicate diamond tiara upon Elena's head.
Elena took a deep, steadying breath, balling her hands into soft fists to calm her racing heart. "Yes, Alicia. Let us put an end to this charade."
Today was no ordinary day. It marked the declaration of the greatest political alliance in the continent's history—the day the Princess of Aurelia would marry the Crown Prince of the neighboring realm, Prince Leonard. It was a purely political arrangement, engineered in ice-cold blood to terminate a brutal war that had ravaged both kingdoms for an entire decade. Innocent people had paid the price with their lives, and now, it was Elena's turn to pay for peace with her freedom.
As the giant wooden doors of the ballroom swung open, the gaze of hundreds of nobles and visiting royals locked onto her. Elena stepped forward with absolute grace and measured strides, maintaining her practiced, diplomatic smile. At the far end of the hall, standing by the platform of honor, was him.
Prince Leonard.
He was clad in his dark blue imperial military uniform, adorned with polished silver armor and medals that bore witness to his ferocity on the battlefield. His short blond hair was impeccably styled, and his sharp, emerald-green eyes—keen as a hawk's—watched her approach with absolute stillness. There was no warmth in his gaze, only profound caution and a chilling coldness that rivaled the winter frost. To Leonard, Elena was merely the daughter of his former enemy, a transaction required to secure his people's safety.
They stood side by side before the reigning kings. Forcing a perfectly fake smile for the roaring crowd, Leonard leaned slightly and whispered in a low tone meant only for her ears, "You look radiant tonight, Princess. I hope you can keep up this flawless acting for the rest of the evening."
Elena did not turn her head. Keeping her eyes fixed forward, she whispered back with equal venom and chilling composure, "Do not fret, Your Highness. You are not the only one sacrificing their life for duty here. Keep your advice to yourself."
The orchestra shifted rhythms, initiating the traditional waltz that the newlyweds were required to lead. Leonard took a step forward, extending a hand clad in a distinction-free, pristine white glove. Elena placed her hand in his, instantly feeling his firm, unyielding grip. Their eyes locked—icy blue against piercing green. It felt as though a silent, invisible war had just commenced right there on the ballroom floor.
They began to move in perfect synchronization, effortlessly deceiving anyone who watched them. Twirling left and right, they spun amidst the loud cheers and applause. Yet, behind this illusory harmony, their breathing was tense, and the words they exchanged cut like daggers.
"I heard you opposed this marriage until the very last moment," Leonard murmured smoothly as he spun her past a pillar.
"And who would willingly place a golden noose around their neck, Your Highness?" Elena countered, dipping gracefully into his arms to complete the step. "But I know my responsibilities. My kingdom always comes first."
A faint, cynical smirk tugged at the corner of Leonard’s lips. "Splendid. At least we agree on one thing. This dance, and this entire marriage, is nothing more than a formal business transaction that ends the moment the treaty is sealed."
The dance persisted for several grueling minutes, though to election day to Elena, it felt like an eternity. The heavy weight of staring eyes and suffocating royal hypocrisy pressed down on her chest until she could barely breathe. She could no longer tolerate the fake smiles of the court.
The moment the music ceased and they both bowed to the cheering audience, Elena seized her chance while the kings were distracted by foreign delegates. She whispered to Alicia that she desperately needed some fresh air, then deftly slipped through the crowd unnoticed.
She navigated the long, dimly lit stone corridors leading toward the castle’s secluded rear gardens. This particular garden had been abandoned for years, nestled far from the noisy festivities, and guarded only on rare occasions.
The instant her slippers stepped onto the cool, damp grass, the chilly night breeze brushed against her face, restoring a fraction of her shattered peace. She walked beneath the untainted silver moonlight that bathed the courtyard in a magical, ethereal glow. The silence here was comforting, a stark contrast to the loud music and greedy stares of the nobility.
Her steps unconsciously guided her to the very center of the garden, where an ancient fountain carved from weathered white marble stood. In old legends, it was known as the "Moonlight Fountain." Water cascaded from it in a gentle, rhythmic flow, producing a soothing melody that calmed her frayed nerves.
Elena stopped at the edge of the basin, gazing down at her own reflection shimmering on the water's surface under the full moon. She let out a long, heavy sigh and raised a hand to rub her aching temples.
"Slipping away from your own royal wedding feast? That is hardly behavior befitting a princess, isn't it?"
Elena froze as that deep, undeniably familiar masculine voice pierced the absolute stillness of the night. She turned around swiftly to find a tall silhouette emerging from the dense shadows of the garden trees.
It was him. Prince Leonard.
He had shed his heavy silver armor, and the top buttons of his blue tunic were undone, giving him a more relaxed appearance. Yet, his piercing gaze remained entirely unchanged.
"And what about you, Your Highness?" Elena retorted, instantly raising her icy, defensive shield. "Abandoning your guests to stalk your future wife into an abandoned garden doesn't seem like behavior befitting a knight either."
Leonard walked over with calm, measured steps until he stood just a few paces away from her. He looked down at the fountain, then turned his eyes to her. "I wasn't stalking you. I, too, desperately needed to escape the suffocating hypocrisy inside."
An abrupt silence settled between them once more, but this time, it wasn't charged with hostility. Instead, it was an alien silence thick with unvoiced curiosity. They both looked up at the sky, where the giant, radiant full moon hung majestically, casting silver threads that illuminated the entire courtyard.
Suddenly, the unimaginable happened.
The calm water inside the marble fountain began to vibrate violently, sending a fine mist shooting into the air that sparkled like crushed diamonds. From the surrounding rose bushes, tiny, glowing particles began to drift upward, gathering around them.
Elena's eyes widened in sheer disbelief as she watched those particles morph into actual butterflies. But they were far from ordinary. They radiated a vibrant, magical luminescence, glowing in shades of ethereal purple, neon blue, and phosphorescent green.
"What on earth is this...?" Leonard whispered, his hand instinctively darting to his waist where his sword usually hung.
The luminous butterflies swarmed in thick clusters, creating a swirling magical ring around Elena and Leonard, effectively trapping them in an isolated pocket of time. At that exact microsecond, a glowing purple butterfly brushed against the fingertips of Elena, while a radiant blue one perched gently upon Leonard’s shoulder.
All at once, a blinding headache struck Elena's mind, and the very ground beneath her feet seemed to shatter. The garden vanished, the moonlight dissolved, and she found herself plunging into a dark vortex of foreign, terrifying memories she had never lived... memories of a bloody battlefield, roaring fires, and a young man who looked exactly like Leonard, holding her tear-stained face and screaming her name amidst the flames!
Elena snapped her eyes open, realizing she was gripping Leonard's arm with desperate strength. Leonard was breathing heavily, his sharp green eyes staring down at her with a raw mix of shock and horror she had never seen in him before.
He had seen it too.
They stared at each other in stunned silence. Down below, the shimmering waters of the fountain reflected an entirely different reality from their current royal attire... mirroring the two of them as desperate, tragic lovers from a long-forgotten age.
