Chapter 6:-

James took a deep breath, steeling himself for the conversation ahead. Instead of confronting Linda directly, he’d decided to enlist the help of his close friends. With his sister Shally by his side and Alvin tagging along, they made their way to George’s laboratory. As they stepped inside, the familiar smell of chemicals and the sight of various scientific equipment greeted them. George looked up from his work, a mischievous grin spreading across his face. “Oh, look who we have here!” George exclaimed in a mockingly surprised tone. “I thought you wouldn’t come to me after what my sister did to you last time. The last I saw you, you were crying like a sad puppy because Jenny chose Chase over you. And then you didn’t even bother to contact me, bro!” Shally laughed, elbowing James playfully. “I think he’s finally learned his lesson about ignoring his friends.” James couldn’t help but smirk, despite feeling the sting of George's words. “Yeah, my mistake,” he admitted. “But we’re not here for a pity party. I need your help.” As they settled in, Alvin, now 12, observed the adults with curious eyes. He remembered something Jacky’s sister, Avery, had said—how her brother Chase was out with Jenny. The realization hit him: he was friends with the little brother of his father’s ex's boyfriend. A wave of amusement washed over him, and he burst into laughter. “Oh my! Who is this handsome man?” George said, glancing at James with exaggerated curiosity. “Perhaps somebody’s son?” James raised an eyebrow, quickly catching on. “Exactly my point! Who is this little fella? Not my son, I suppose…” George’s jaw dropped in surprise, glancing at Shally, who was trying to stifle her laughter. “Wait, what? You can’t be serious!” “Come on, Dad, you’re kidding, right?” Alvin replied, his wide eyes reflecting genuine confusion. James, trying to keep a straight face, turned to Shally. “Shally…” “I’m on it, sir,” she said, smirking as she knelt down to Alvin’s level. “Hey buddy, how about we find you something to eat?” She took his hand and led him out to a café nearby, chatting animatedly to keep him engaged. Once they were alone, George’s amusement faded, replaced by genuine concern. “So, what’s going on?” he asked James, leaning against a lab table. James sighed, running a hand through his hair. “There’s a lot I need to figure out. Linda’s been acting strange, and I’m starting to suspect that Alvin isn’t really my son.” George raised an eyebrow, intrigued. “What do you mean?” As Shally returned, the conversation shifted. George’s expression morphed into one of astonishment as James recounted his suspicions about Linda. George listened intently, his scientific mind whirring. Finally, he couldn’t help himself. “You know, there’s a lot we can determine from genetics,” he began, his excitement evident. “For starters, the gene for hair color is inherited in a pretty straightforward manner. If you have black hair, that’s the dominant trait—” “Yeah, I know that,” James interrupted, rolling his eyes. “But Alvin has blonde hair.” “Exactly!” George continued, animated. “So if you look at it genetically, for Alvin to have blonde hair, both parents would need to carry the recessive trait. If your dominant trait is black hair, it’s statistically unlikely for you to have a blonde child unless the other parent carries that recessive gene. So, it’s more likely that…” James nodded slowly, piecing together George’s words. “You’re saying there’s a biological mismatch?” “Absolutely!” George exclaimed, practically glowing with excitement. “This is fascinating! Not to mention, if you delve deeper into his other traits—eye color, for example—you’d find even more discrepancies.” “Great, so now I’m a science project?” James replied sarcastically, though he appreciated the information. “Hey, I’m just saying,” George shrugged, trying to suppress a grin. “We can run tests if you really want to get to the bottom of this.” “Let’s not go that far just yet,” James said, chuckling despite himself. “But it’s definitely something to consider.” As the conversation continued, the air filled with a mix of laughter and serious contemplation, the weight of secrets and revelations hovering just beneath the surface.
