Natural Causes
Valerie
Starring blanky out the window, I wonder if things were always gloomy here. I haven't been home in years after I graduated high school I left and never looked back. After mom died I just could not bare being here with that horrid man but I suppose things have a way of getting back at people like that. My step father died last week and with no one to leave his estate to, I now own everything. Including everything he took from me and mom. Before I could start looking through things there was a knock at the door. Who would come here?
I went and opened the door. A police officer was standing there patiently waiting.
“Hello, can I help you with something officer?”
“Hi ma'am I am officer Reynolds with Fairvalley police department. Do you have a few minutes?”
I stepped aside to let officer Reynolds in. I have been in town for mere hours, I know I haven't done anything.
“Come in of course. Let's have a seat in here.” I lead him to the living room and take a seat on the couch. He follows and sits in the adjacent chair.
“I know this all must seem weird but the circumstances regarding your fathers…”
“Step father.” I interject, not being able to bite my tounge.
He clears his throat. “Yes, step father. His death although publicly announced as natural causes was not an accident. He was murdered.”
I laugh, full belly laugh. Karma. Always a cruel mistress. I stop.
“OH my god! I'm so sorry. God I must look crazy.” Dear God this man just told me my step father was murdered and I laughed so hard. His expression was soft and the way he looked at me said he understood.
“I know Valerie, I was close with your mom before she got sick. Jim was cruel to her I can only image what happened after she…” he trailed off. This man looked so sad while talking about my mom. Before anything else was said there was yet another knock.
Officer Reynolds mumbled something about I told him to wait.
I look at my phone its 6 o'clock and I was hoping to go shower and go to bed by 8 to make up for the time difference.
“I'm sorry I was hoping to explain this to you before he got here.” Officer Reynolds got up and walked to the door as the knocking started again, a little louder this time.
“Before who got here?” I trailed behind him. He opened the door and my breath hitched. Emerald eyes stared back at me and I couldn't look away. He towered over me and officer Reynolds, his muscles were bulging out of his shirt and he had ink peeking out off his sleeves and reaching up his neck. Officer Reynolds cleared his throat and we both looked at him. This man's expression almost seemed upset about the interruption.
“You have somewhere to be.” His voice was like silk. Although this wasn't a question, more like he was telling him to leave. Officer Reynolds looked at me and mouthed im sorry and slipped through the door and the man.
I just stood there waiting. I had no idea who this man was or even what his name is. I'm suddenly very aware that it's dark out, and I am faced with a stranger in a place I haven't been in years.
The fear and confusion must be evident on my face because the man looked at me curiously while deliberating his next words very carefully.
“Sorry, I will introduce myself. Hello Valerie, I am Lysander Grimm, but most people call me Lyx. I am here because I am owed and I always collect on debts.” Why does it seem like everyone knows me, and I don't know anyone? Wait, what is he here for? Money, the house…?
“I dont care. Take whatever you want. I just want my mother's stuff. That is all im here for..."
Lyx let out a dark chuckle and his face looked almost devious.
"You think I want any of these trivial things? I am here for something that is more personal than that... my dear girl I am here for you. You, Valerie Moore are the debt I am here to collect." I am to stunned to speak. What did he just say?
Everything starts spinning and then everything goes black.
My head is throbbing and everything is slowly coming into focus when I open my eyes. I am looking straight at some intricate tattoo. I start getting my baring and realize im moving and I am wrapped in strong muscular arms. He looks down at me noticing I am looking around.
"Calm down Valerie, I know you are new to all of this." He lightly sets me down... on my bed? He took me upstairs and into my childhood room?
"How did you know where to take me? What did you mean you are here for me? why did you call me Valerie Moore? You must be mistaken then right?" My head started spinning again. I have so many questions.
His expression was dark. "Didn't I tell you to calm down? I dont need you passing out again." He seemed almost mad that he had to answer to me.
"One thing at a time. I know it is you who I am after. I have known that for 26 years. You are Valerie Moore by birth and you are mine." He said it with such a definitive tone that I almost believed him.
"I know who I am!"
"Then who are you?" He smirked! This is amusing him. This man runs hot and cold faster than a broken water heater.
"I am Valerie Baker. Daughter of Susan Baker!" Again he let out a dark chuckle! This man sure has some audacity to laugh at me. I huff and he smirks at me.
