Maya's POV Jane blinked, stunned by my words. I loosened my grip on her arm, letting a sweet smile curl on my lips just before the darkness rushed back in again. **** When I woke up again, Fred was still by my side. This time I was at the hospital. “Babe, you good?” he asked. There was worry in his eyes, although I didn’t know if I could trust that look anymore. “Yes, I’m fine,” I said, trying to get up—then realized I had an ongoing IV infusion. “Good day, Mrs. Maya. I’m Doctor Amanda. It’s good to see you awake. How are you feeling?” “Good day, doctor, I feel okay, slightly dizzy okay.” I answered feeling a little bit of pain at the back of my head. “Mrs maya, you still can’t remember anything? you had just hit your head and it can help juggle your memory back.” Her words hit me hard in the throat, causing me to swallow whatever lump hanging in there. I didn’t know if I should let out the truth or remain quiet. I glanced at Jane, staring deep into her eyes, like I was looking for an answer to the doctor question. “Yes… I can’t remember anything ” I lied. “Okay no worries and no pressure, your memories would definitely come back okay?” The doctor responded. “Yes, thank you so much doc.” I responded, smiling widely. ****** That night, I couldn't sleep, my memories were back, the betrayal hurt. Jane, the one who was supposed to be my best friend, has been sleeping with my husband while Fred only needed me for some stupid surgery and after he would just toss me in the bin. The most hurtful thing was how my career was in the mix of all these. I put everything in our marriage but I was just a pawn in their game. “Wow” I chuckled dryly with anger surging through my veins. I will teach them exactly how the game is being played! I will make them suffer! Make them lose everything they’ve worked for till they are left with nothing and everything I would do, while still faking the marriage. “ May,” Jane's voice interrupted my thoughts, causing me to glance behind. She tried to touch me when I juggled my shoulder away. “Is there something else you want?” My face hardened as I questioned in a serious tone. “About earlier, I didn’t know how it happened. I must have taken a lot of alcohol and I wasn't really paying attention” she explained, her voice sounding pitiful and apologetically but not anymore. I am not falling for her trick. She has always been a sly b***h. “Seriously” I chuckled dryly and continued “Are we really going to keep acting like we are on a good term!” I blurted out. “I don’t get it,” she murmured out, blinking her eyes. “ What don't you get?! I remember everything !” I said angrily. “I caught you. In bed. With my husband.” She looked at me in shock. She tried touching me but I moved away from her. “Don't you dare Jane. You were supposed to be my best friend but you let me marry a man you were in love with. For what?!” “All these years you both have been playing me.” My voice cracked, right now I was tired of bottling up my feelings. “You betrayed me Jane and you even let it get to my career. My years of work fruitless! I cried to you every time Jane, you knew how disheartened I got every time a promotion passed me by, but still you didn't care at all and you let that happen.” “Maya, please I'm.. “No, from now on I will be doing the talking and you, the listening.” “What?” “You will do for whatever I asked you to do without questioning and you dare not speak a word to Fred” “Is this you threatening me?” She smiled shamelessly and I wished I could strangle her to death but not today. I need her to bring Fred down and by then I would return to killing her slowly and gently. “You really do not know what you are into, do you?” I brought my phone out, swiped it open and flipped it on the floor revealing the content of the screen. “What- her eyes popped out, bleeding with anger and fear. She gently raised her eyes, our eyes clocked into another as I smiled with the corner of my teeth. “I’m sure you don’t want this going out there on the internet” A few days ago, I suddenly received a message from an unknown source which happened to be a secret video of Jane F*****g her way with the directors for awards. I was shocked as fear gripped my mind because the timing at which this video came in tells two things. First, this unknown person knows about me and my whole past. He or she knew about the betrayal and knows the consequences of revealing it to me. Second, this unknown person knows that I have regained my memory! “But who could this be?” That has been the only question on my mind. I didn’t let all of that get to me, I mean, I would sort my way but for now, the video seems very useful. “What- do- you want?- She asked, her voice shaking. I could tell I have succeeded in creeping fear into her soul. ****** It's Monday morning and finally I’m resuming back to work. It took me a lot of sweet words to convince Fred that I needed to go back to work. To say how difficult it was, I had to let him believe that I wouldn’t let it obvious I lost my memory. I was excited and kinda scared. I didn’t know what to expect but I needed to face my fears. “Babe hurry up, we're going to be late.” Fred called out. He insisted on taking me to work, he was acting like the golden husband right now. It's so sad to watch. “I'm dressed already….you know I can find my way.” I was putting on a black pants suit and a T-shirt. I took one last glance at the mirror looking at the woman they tried to break. I am strong and I'm going to get my revenge. “Nope I'm taking you to work and that's final, you look and smell so nice.” He said squeezing me and giving me a kiss, a creepy one which caused my stomach to twist. ******* By the end of the day, I was emotionally exhausted. I stepped outside and pulled out my phone to call an Uber when a sleek black car rolled up in front of me and stopped. The window rolled down. “Need a ride, Mrs. Maya Williams?” The man who stepped out was devastatingly handsome jet-black hair, glassy blue eyes, and a voice like velvet laced with danger. I recognized him, vaguely. A face from the past I couldn’t fully place. But I forced my expression to stay blank. The last thing I needed was anyone catching on to my act. “Who are you?” I asked coolly. “And I don’t take rides from strangers.” He smirked. It wasn’t warm, it was calculated. Dangerous. “Really?” He asked “Yes, really, I'm currently going through something so I can't really recall people, so don't be upset but I'd have to decline the ride.” “I know you’re faking the amnesia sweetheart. Smart move, by the way. You’re playing this beautifully. But you’re going to need more than fake memory loss to bring them down.” My heart skipped. He leaned closer, voice low. “ I’m Gerald Nate,” he said and continued. “You saved my life once, Maya. Years ago. Now I’m going to return the favor. I have resources. Leverage. Blood on my hands already, if that’s what you’re worried about. You want revenge?” His smile darkened. “I can give you more than that. I can make them beg.” I stared at him for a moment. This wasn’t some white knight. This was a man built for war. And maybe that’s exactly what I needed. “Wait- I recalled and continued. “You are the one behind those secret messages?” “What messages- he bursted into laughter like I had just cracked some silly jokes but I wasn’t in for that so I kept my face straight and hardened. “Wow, I guess I’m not the only one who's aware of your fake amnesia” “You should grab onto my offer before I change my mind. I am the only one who could keep you safe” he said boastfully and without a second of doubt thoughts, I got into his car.
