Chapter 5

959 Words

After giving my statement to the police, a light drizzle began to fall. I stood under the eaves, feeling a sense of unreality wash over me. Avery's car pulled up again, and he rolled down the window, beckoning me with a wave. I forced a smile and got in. This time, he took me home. His house was indeed more than twice the size of Owen's, but the decor was cold and impersonal. He sat on the sofa and took out his cigarette case, but then seemed to remember something and tossed it in the trash. I sat beside him, pretending to be calm, but I couldn't bring myself to speak first. We sat in silence for a long time before he finally asked tentatively, "Do you..." I nodded uncertainly, a wave of bitterness washing over me. I couldn't begin to guess how Avery would react to this child.
