The day before the wedding, Owen's childhood sweetheart, Ella, had a depressive episode.

She threatened to destroy the wedding dress my grandmother had made for me before she passed away.

To appease her, Owen locked me in a room and watched as Ella destroyed my dress.

Facing the mess, he said indifferently, "Be understanding. It's just a wedding dress. Would you rather see her die?"

Later, Owen's uncle, Avery, asked me to marry him and continue the family line.

I agreed. But Owen, with red eyes, asked me, "You're really going to have his child? Don't you want me anymore?"

I covered my slightly bulging belly. "Be understanding. It's just a child. He's your uncle. Would you rather see the family line end?"

Chapter 1
Ella was having another depressive episode. Nestled in Owen’s arms, she trembled as she pleaded, "Owen, please don't marry her, okay?" Owen froze for a moment and then held her tighter, his eyes full of tenderness. "Okay, I'll listen to you, Ella." My heart trembled, and I clenched my fingers until they turned white. I had lost count of how many times he had crossed the line. Ella and Owen were childhood sweethearts. In an elevator accident, she pushed Owen out to save him, leaving her with depression. When I had a high fever, she hysterically threatened suicide. On our anniversary, she said she was scared to be alone. When I sprained my ankle, she had nightmares. Every time I needed Owen, Ella would snatch him away. I knew about the life-saving bond between them, so I always gave in. But this time, I didn't want to anymore. "Owen, are we still getting married tomorrow?" I asked. Owen paused while comforting Ella, his voice low. "Eleanor, you know Ella is sick. She can't be stimulated." What else was there to say? I scoffed. "Okay, then there's really no need for this wedding. Take good care of her." Owen finally looked up at me, a flicker of panic in his eyes. But he still sat there, holding Ella tightly. I didn't want to get entangled with him anymore, so I turned and went back to my room to pack. But as soon as I left the bedroom, I found Owen blocking the door. He looked at me, his voice annoyed. "Eleanor, can you be a little more understanding? It's just a wedding. I'll make it up to you." I almost laughed in anger. He actually thought it was just a wedding. Too lazy to talk to him anymore, I tried to walk past him, but he grabbed my wrist. Just when I thought he wanted to make things right, I heard him say, "You can go, but leave the wedding dress. Ella will have nightmares if she sees this. The dress will be destroyed." I froze for a moment, wondering if I had heard correctly. "Are you kidding me?" Owen knew that this wedding dress was handmade by my grandmother before she died. It was the only thing she left me. His grip on my wrist tightened, and he reached for the suitcase, trying to grab the dress. My eyes reddened as I resisted. "Owen, how could you?" A flash of anger crossed Owen's eyes. "It's just a wedding dress. Can't you be more generous?" He pushed me hard, and I fell to the floor. Seizing the opportunity, he snatched the suitcase and slammed the door shut. I rushed to the door like crazy and screamed desperately. "Owen! Don't touch my wedding dress! That's all Grandma left me! Owen! Please!" But no matter how much I pleaded, I was met with silence. Emotionally defeated, I hung my head weakly, hair falling messily over my face. Just then, Ella sent me a video. In the video, Owen was holding scissors, cutting my wedding dress to shreds. ***** I watched, eyes bloodshot. Ella pretended to be considerate. "Owen, will Eleanor be angry that you cut up the wedding dress for me?" "Good girl, as long as you are happy. Don't think too much." The video ended abruptly, and I leaned against the door, numb. I didn't know how long it was before the door opened. Owen stood there with a cigarette in his mouth, looking down at me with indifference. "Eleanor, I'll buy you a new wedding dress." I couldn't hold back my anger any longer. With all my strength, I slapped him. "Who wants your things? Owen, we're done!" I shoved him hard and walked out, past the ruined dress, tears blurring my vision. Ella's shrill voice came from behind me. "Owen, are you okay? Eleanor was just being impulsive. Don't be angry. Go and coax her!" "Coax her? Let her throw her tantrum. She'll be back in a couple of days." I didn't stop. I left without looking back. The night was dark, and the rain fell in a chaotic rhythm. I looked at my phone, which showed no ride requests. I found an eave to shelter from the rain. After a long time, a black car slowly pulled up and stopped in front of me. Owen's uncle, Avery, was in the driver's seat. He rolled down the window and beckoned me with a low, cold voice. "Get in." I was stunned. He continued, "Do you want me to come down and beg you?" I barely knew Avery. Apart from meeting him a few times with Owen, my impression of him was a stern man who gave off a strong sense of oppression. It was said that he had a powerful background, was successful in his career, and was notoriously aloof from women. After hesitating, I finally got in the car. The car was eerily quiet, the sound of rain hitting the windshield particularly loud. I tugged at the corner of my mouth, trying to ease the awkwardness. "Avery, thank you for earlier." The man nodded slightly and smiled. "We're family. No need to be so formal." I lowered my eyes, not knowing what to say. Seeing this, Avery stopped smiling and asked in a serious tone, "Did you have a fight with Owen?" I nodded and then shook my head. "I... broke up with him." Avery was silent for a long time. He took out his phone, clicked on his contacts, and dialed Owen's number. After a few rings, the call was answered. A respectful male voice came from the other end. "Hello? Avery." Avery's tone was slow and drawn out. "I just called to ask about the wedding tomorrow." Owen chuckled and said carelessly, "Avery, I didn't have time to tell you. The wedding is off." "Why?" "Ella doesn't want it." His face was calm, his voice low. "Did you ask Eleanor what she wants?" I was stunned. This distant uncle cared more about my thoughts than my fiancé. Owen said nonchalantly, "Why should I care what she thinks?" "Besides, the thought of spending my life with such a demanding woman makes me shudder. Ella is sick. I wouldn't dare to contradict her, but Eleanor still wants to walk all over me. She is playing this running away game. I'd like to see where she thinks she can go without me, who else would want her." Avery frowned slightly. He gave a faint "hmm" and hung up the phone impatiently. I sat there, feeling a weight on my chest. After a while, Avery said slowly, "It's good that you broke up." I was surprised. "Huh?" "He doesn't deserve you." Avery slowed the car and pulled over to the side of the road. He turned to me, his eyes searching mine. "Now that the wedding is off, have you thought about how to explain it to your family?" Avery's words reminded me that my Samuel still needed Owen's financial support. If I broke off the engagement now, I wouldn't be able to face my family. I was silent, not knowing what to do. I looked at Avery pleadingly. "Do you have any suggestions?" He chuckled, his voice low. "How about marrying me?"
