Prologue
Prologue The squeal of Derek’s truck tires faded into the distance and Samantha began to sob. Shuddering, she blindly groped her way to her car and fell inside, letting the tears flow freely. Flashes of her three-and-a-half-year relationship with Derek assaulted her mind. Her now ex-boyfriend was a lowlife of the highest order, but he had been her lowlife. He was abusive, both verbally and physically, but he had also made her feel like the most beautiful woman in the world. Derek had cheated on her, yet at the same time convinced her she would be his wife someday and they would lead a storybook life. He had mooched off of her, but he’d also promised her he would take care of her. Now all the illusions were finally shattered. Their relationship was unhealthy—a train wreck—but it was all Samantha knew. Derek, beautiful pathetic loser though he was, had been her one constant in an otherwise crazy existence. Now that anchor point was gone, and she was alone—totally, utterly alone.
