With the early morning traffic light, the trip to Heysham proved uneventful, and with time to spare, Edward made the ferry to Man as planned. Midway through the sea journey, he patted his coat pocket and realized he’d left his cigarettes in the car. He left the lounge and took the stairs to the lower deck. As he went, he whistled a catchy little ditty, something new and predictably satirical by Sammy Kaye and his orchestra. After Edward unlocked the Hillman, he grabbed the pack of cigarettes he’d left on the passenger seat, and walked over to the railing.
