That whole day, darcey was on edge at work in the diner. The day went very slowly. She felt like she hadn't slept in days but was also fearing bedtime. every year close to her birthday, she would have these dreams. they haunted her but also helped her to remember who she really was. sometimes, she just could slip into the monotony of this mundane life she was living, forgetting that she would someday have to return home, or worse, someone would find her before then. Next week was her 20th birthday. she still had one year. but she felt that every year she got closer, the harder her birthdays became and the more vivid her dreams were.
when darcey finished work that day, she decided to hit up the local dive bar on her way home. it was usually quiet in there besides the usual faces who never seemed to bother her much when she was there. Darcey wasn't old enough to drink, but she had a good enough fake ID to get by in places like this.
The smell of bleach and old pine and alcohol hit her nostrils as she entered. she didn't like the smell but as the drinks would come it would bother her less and less. Darcey ordered her usual double white dog whiskey and sat herself in a quiet corner. The whiskey felt smooth and warmed her as she finished her first glass and raised her finger to the bar man to signal for another. She had 2 more before she heard the door open. At this stage, she was starting to feel the effects of the alcohol. She looked up from her place in the corner to see the familiar brown jacket of the man whom she had dreamed of.
she laughed a little to herself and thought, " Of course of all dive bars, he would choose mine. Coincidence or not, the drinks were flowing too well for her to care too much. The man sat with his back to her at the bar and proceeded to order himself 2 drinks, the same drinks she was drinking, a double whiskey on the rocks.
She warily watched him turn and sit across from her on the small table. She was stunned into silence when she saw his face. He was very handsome and also had a hint of familarty, which she put down to running into him a while ago.
He coughed and looked into her eyes. almost like expecting something. He smiled a beautiful smile, showing his one dimpled cheek and white teeth. " You don't recognise an old friend when you see one princess??
That was when she put it together. She almost choked on her last mouthful of whiskey.
It was her childhood friend Dean who had always sworn to protect her!.
What what?? Ho, how are you here! how did you find me? What are you doing here, Dean? I thought you were dead. They wouldn't let me contact anyone from back then. I've been completely alone since they got mom two years ago! Darcey was starting to hyper ventilate. " Calm down, darcey, or you will attack attention to us. take a deep breath.
I'm here to help you. they didn't want me to come. they said it was too soon. But we need to train you! you have lived too long and too far away from pack life. Have you even been shifting? Darcey bowed her head almost in shame. she had not shifted since her mother left. She was too afraid to do it on her own. Her wolf was too sad to even enjoy running without a companion. wolves were pack animals, after all!.
She rarely heard anything from her wolf. These days, more just felt her instincts. But she also hadn't reached out to her wolf. she didn't know if she could or if she would even listen to her now. She knew her wolf felt abandoned first by their mother and then by her!.
The alcohol started to make darcey feel dizzy at this stage. Dean took her glass from her and told her, " Come on, you have had enough. I don't like to see you like this. I will take you home. Darcey got up and followed him out to the windy city. It seemed much louder and brighter after the alcohol. She didn't expect it to still be daylight, but she must not have been in the bar for very long.
Dean grabbed her by the arm and led her up the street towards her apparentment.
He took a bunch of keys from his pocket and opened the door to the block, then brought her up the flight of stairs. she felt a little wobbly on her feet. As they to her floor Mrs Jenkins opened her door to say hello and spotted darcey with Dean. darcey smiled at her weakly but exhausted. Mrs darcey looked at Dean and smiled. Take care of her Dean.
Darcey was inside sat on the chair by her bed struggling to take her boots off when it hit her like a tone of bricks.
" wait Dean. Mrs Jenkins how do you know her. she knew you by name. what's going on here? Dean sighed and looked at the floor. Mrs Jenkins is one of us darcey she has been watching you since your mother passed.
Its not as bad as it sounds she just reports back to me. To let me know that you are safe. it was either that or they wouldn't be able to keep me from you.. I needed to know!. but also no one else could know of how she knows us. It's too dangerous.
Darcey felt so betrayed all this time she believed Mrs Jenkins was her friend. Not because of who she was but because she thought she was genuinely her friend.
Dean could see the sadness in her eyes. "hey don't be like that. don't be sad. Mrs darcey was here just to report back if needed or if anything happened. Your friendship with her wasn't part of the job. That bit is real. we new that it wouldn't stay a secret for long.
Darcey felt overwhelmed and so tired. " just get some sleep darcey. She looked out the window to see it was starting to get dark. it was still early enough but she could feel sleep pull her..
She wobbled to her bed and he tucked her in." goodnight darcey. I will be here from not on.. don't worry you don't have to do this alone anymore. I will help you. And your wolf.
Sleep took her almost immediately. This time she dreamed of her wolf. of when she first turned and of how it felt to run threw the woods and feel her paws in the dirt. She felt so free.. her wolf ran threw the trees faster than any other wolf could and then it came upon the lake so near her old home. Her wolf went to the lake and lapper up water greedily. She looked at the reflection of her beautiful white wolf in the lake remembering that this Is why she is different from everyone else. Her white wolf standing taller than most other wolfs was a female alfa. It oozed strength and grace. It was the most regal creature anyone could lay eyes on.
She awoke to Dean snoring on the chair beside her bed using his brown coat as a blanket. Darcey smiled and decided she really didn't like that coat and they would have to get him a new one. he was too young to wear the coat of an old man. tho it probably made him blend in.
Darcey closed her eyes for the first time in a long time and spoke to her wolf. Can you feel that? Maya! Dean is here. we are not alone. Maybe we do not need to be afraid anymore! we are not alone!.
Darceys wolf didn't reply. more like she just heard a ruffle in back of her head. The sound her wolf would make when they were waking up after sleeping outside for a long time. she could feel maya shaking off her fir and pacing around at the back of her mind. her wolf was awake now, but she still would not speak back to darcey, which made her sigh out loud.. I'm so sorry maya. I should have tried harder after mother died. I should have made sure we stuck together but I didn't know how. I will make it up to you. Darcey heard nothing but silence. She must have drifted back to sleep again because when she woke up Dean was gone. She panicked and almost wondered was it one of her vivid dreams. Then she noticed beside her bed was a fresh glass of water and some pain killers which she gladly downed as she was feeling very groggy from the whiskey. She didn't drink often and was starting to remember why. Beside her water was a small note just stating " gone to get breakfast D"
Darcey decided to get up and have a hot shower while he was out.she was still in her clothes from yesterday and would be embarrassed for Dean to come back to her in this state. She opened the window by her bed to let some fresh air in and went for her shower. When she emerged from the bathroom, Dean entered threw her apartment door holding 2 coffees and a bag of fresh donuts, which all smelled delicious. A smile slowly appeared on her face, and she quickly went to hug him.. " woooah woooah Darcey. carrying hot drinks here.. he put them down and took her into his embrace.. " well s**t. if all I have to do to get one of these from you is feed you, then I'll be giving you every meal. They both laughed a little, and Darcey squeezed him tighter while a few stray tears escaped her eyes.
" I've been so alone, Dean
I'm so happy you are here now. My life has been so boring and lonely.. I don't want to be afraid anymore..
" Don't worry, Darcey, I'm not going anywhere. from now on, we face everything together..
