before we take you to the bigging
It was a dark rainy evening in seattle. The clouds hung heavy in the sky. Darcy sighed as she looked out the window of the local diner she worked in. She was not looking forward to the journey home in this weather. Her shift finished 20 minutes ago, but she had hoped the rain would let up. if anything It appeared to be getting worse. the TV on the wall switched on, and her manager geoff sat down at a nearby table to sit and eat his meal while watching the news.. warnings of a thunder storm blared from the TV as the usual weather man proceeded to give the daily forecast. everyone was advised to stay indoors for the evening if possible..
The door chimed to let them know a customer had entered the diner, darcey turned her attention from the TV to the door. immediately, chills ran up her arms when she saw who had entered. it was a local guy named Rob. He was in his late 20s and had become accustomed to stopping by the diner always conveniently when darcey was on shift. he had asked her out on a date several times. she was running out of ways to effectively turn him down or deter him
. he was a very persistent man. Rob was a local police officer who struggled to accept that he couldn't get his own way.
as soon as his eyes caught darcey, his face changed to what she assumed he thought was a charming smile but always made darcey feel ill.. " hope your not heading out into that mess unaccompanied darcey let me drive you home!. she panicked a little but thinking on her feet she replied" thanks Rob but have to run my friends are waiting for me!.
Darcey emerged from the diner into the rain. leaving so quickly she had forgotten her jacket. she proceeded to jog along the side of the buildings, trying to keep as dry as she could. It was a 20-minute walk to her apartment from here, and her attempts to keep dry were futile.
the streets weren't as busy as usual. People seemed to be heeding the words of the weather man.
Darcey was now just a couple of blocks from her apartment and was thoroughly soaked to her skin. it had gotten a lot darker in the few minutes since she had left the diner. she was so close to home that she was starting to feel relief.
traffic was heavy on the roads that day as always it is when it rains this heavy. she was holding her head down while moving along the sidewalk and accidently bumped into a man wearing a long brown coat.
she didn't stop for long, just shouted her apologies to the man she was passing as she proceeded down the street to the roadside. there were a few people standing waiting to cross the street. darcey didn't pay attention to any faces as she was in such a hurry.
the green light came on for them to cross the street. darcey was rushing, so she didn't stop to make sure nothing was coming and went to dash across the road. just as her foot was about to touch the road, an arm grabbed her by the waste and hauled her back to the sidewalk while a cyclist flew by just inches from darcey. She stood there in shock for a moment and looked down to see the arm wrapped around her was the same brown coat that she had bumped into several minutes ago. The man leaned forward and whispered into darceys ear, " You should be more careful, princess. I may not always be so close to protect you! Darcey closed her eyes and took a deep breath, and turned to see the face of the man who seemed to be following her. and even more worryingly seemed to either know who she was, either that or it was an eerie coincidence. when she looked up to see the face or the man he had already gone, she could see him turn a corner to an alley just a few feet away. darcey chased after him, when she got to the dark alley, and he appeared to be gone.
Just then, a crack of thunder sounded so loud it almost felt as if everything shook, darcey decided to turn herself back and head to her apparent and hopefully forget about this whole strange incident.
Finally, the door to her apartment block came into view, and she decided to give it an extra dash to the door. when she got there, she hadn't realised her hands were shaking slightly as she tried to turn the key in the lock. Darcey lived in a small apartment block that probably could do with some updating. the familiar musty smell filled her nostrils as she entered the hallway and closed the door quickly behind her. She sprinted up the flight of stairs to her apartment on the second floor. just as darcey got to her doorway, her neighbours door creaked open. Mrs Jenkins peeped her head out. " goodness darcey, you look like you have just climbed out of the green river itself. go get dried up, and I will bring you a mug of hot cocoa.
Darcey looked down, and her drenched appearance and nervous laughed. " Thank you, Mrs Jenkins it appears I have gotten myself into a little situation. She let herself into her apparent, leaving the door unlatched for Mrs Jenkins to follow. she quickly went to her outdated bathroom and grabbed her towel to pat herself down before changing into something dry and comfortable.
when Mrs darcey arrived in she was already in her favourite pjamas and cosy dressing gown. Mrs darcey had a nice pot of hot cocoa and some biscuits which she secretly appreciated as darcey felt her stomach about to rumble and realised she hadn't bought any food and was pretty sure he fridge and cabinets were empty.
Mrs Jenkins sat in the second of two chairs at darceys kitchen table that seemed to fill all the space of her small kitchen " now tell me dear what on God's green earth has you out in that storm and running around town like a wet rag doll.
darcey proceeded to tell her about Rob and her quick exit home.
Mrs Jenkins sighed. " That officer Rob doesn't seem to want to take a hint, does he. you must be careful of men like him. something about him just does not sit well with me.. not from what you have been telling me anyway. Darcey smiled at the old lady who sadly for darcey was probably one of her only friends in the world. darcey couldn't mix with many people due to her situation and having to keep her true identity to herself since a very young age. she wondered if Mrs Jenkins knew how important her friendship was to her.
They both idly chit chatted Mrs Jenkins telling story's of what had happened in the apartments while darcey was working. apparently, the man two doors down had been kicked out for cheating on his wife again. and another neighbour had their TV repossessed for not paying bills on time, which sadly was a regular acurance occurrence around this part of town. the rents were cheaper here than other parts of town but people with regular jobs still struggled to make ends meet, which explained why darcey tried to eat more in work and her fridge only contained some cheese slices and a granola bar. Mrs Jenkins yawned and started to gather her pot and cups, letting darcey know their catch up was over for the night. Darcey was still hungry, so she opted to take her granola bar and lay on her bed. she sat up to look out the window when she heard a clap of thunder in the distance. she sunk her teeth into her bar and starred out at the street below. Just then, a flash of light lit up the alley across the way. There he was, standing in the alley, the silleuette of a man in a long
jacket. then there was another flash, and he was gone. she blinked twice and decided she had enough of tonight and put it down to her wild imagination.. while darcey struggled to fall asleep when she finally did, she dreamed of a familiar man in a long jacket!
