The Road We Walked Together Chapter One — The Photograph The morning Daniel found the photograph, the forest was unusually quiet. He could hear the soft crunch of leaves beneath his shoes as he walked behind his parents and his little sister, Lily. Sunlight slipped through the tall trees, painting golden shapes across the narrow path. “Wait for me!” Lily shouted. Daniel turned and smiled. “You’re the one who wanted to come.” “I know,” she replied, running toward him. “But you walk too fast.” Their father laughed from ahead. For a moment, everything felt perfect. Daniel had always loved mornings like this. No arguments. No phones ringing. No problems waiting at home. Just his family walking together. But as they passed an enormous old tree, Daniel noticed something unusual. A small corner of paper was sticking out from beneath the roots. He stopped. “What is it?” Lily asked. “I don't know.” Daniel crouched and carefully pulled it free. It was an old photograph. The picture showed a young man standing beside a woman in the same forest. They were smiling at the camera. Daniel stared at the man. His heart suddenly skipped. “Dad?” His father stopped walking. When Daniel showed him the photograph, the smile disappeared from his father's face. His mother went completely silent. Daniel looked from one parent to the other. “Who are they?” His father took a step toward him. “Where did you find that?” “Under the tree.” His father's hands began to tremble. Then Daniel turned the photograph over. There was a sentence written on the back. He recognized the handwriting immediately. His father's handwriting. “If you ever find this, Daniel, it means the time has come for you to know the truth.” Daniel looked up. His father was staring at him. “What truth?” Nobody answered. Then his mother quietly said, “We should go home.” But Daniel knew something had changed. For the first time in his life, he realized that his parents had been keeping something from him. And whatever that secret was... It had been waiting for him in the forest.
