Chapter 1
The Wrong Place The heavy rain made it hard to see anything down by the docks. It was cold, dark, and past two in the morning. The air smelled like salt and old rust. I pulled my leather jacket tight around me and walked faster. I was taking a shortcut home through an empty alley, trying not to miss my bus. I just wanted to get home, dry off, and go to sleep. Then I heard footsteps. I froze immediately. I pulled back and hid behind a giant metal shipping container, holding my breath. A few feet away, under a dim yellow streetlight, four men were standing in the mud. Three of them wore expensive black suits. The fourth man was on his knees, soaking wet and covered in mud. His face was bruised and bloody. He was begging for his life. "Please, boss!" the man wept, shaking with fear. "I swear I didn't talk to anyone! I didn't say a word!" The man standing in front of him didn't yell. He didn't even look angry. He was tall, dark-haired, and wore a pristine charcoal suit that looked way too clean for a filthy alley like this. He held a silver lighter, flipping it open and shut with a quiet click-clack. This was Lucian Vance. Everyone in the city knew his name, but nobody was brave enough to say it out loud. He controlled the whole city the docks, the police, and the dark streets. "You broke the rules, Arthur," Lucian said softly. His voice was calm, which made him sound even scarier. "And those lips of his are dangerous." Lucian gave a small nod to the guard next to him. The guard stepped forward, raised a gun with a silencer, and pulled the trigger. Thwip. The man on his knees fell straight into a muddy puddle. Blood slowly mixed with the rainwater on the ground. My chest tightened. I couldn't breathe. My heart was pounding so hard I thought they would hear it. I need to get out of here right now, I thought while shivering in fear. I took one slow step backward, trying to be quiet. But my heel hit a rusted metal oil drum hidden in the dark. CLANG! The noise echoed through the empty alley. "Check the perimeter," Lucian ordered instantly. I didn't think twice. I turned and ran as fast as I could. But before I could reach the street, a huge man stepped out of the shadows and slammed his arm into my chest. I hit the wet ground hard, the air knocked straight out of my lungs. Before I could crawl away, two guards grabbed my arms, yanked me up, and dragged me back to the streetlight. They threw me onto my knees right next to the dead body. Three handguns were pointed straight at my head. "Look who we have here?" Lucian asked smoothly. He walked over and looked down at me. His dark eyes were cold and completely empty, like he was looking at an annoying bug. In his world, the rule was very simple if someone sees a murder, you kill them too. You shoot them, Then throw them in the ocean, and move on. It takes two minutes. The guard holding me growled, pressing the cold metal barrel of his gun against my neck. "Should I shoot her now, boss?" My instincts told me to cry, to beg for mercy, to promise I wouldn't tell anyone. But I knew how men like Lucian worked. If you act like prey, they eat you alive. I took a deep breath, forced my fear down, and stood up on my own two feet. The guard shoved the gun harder against my head. "Stay down!" "Let her stand," Lucian said quietly. I wiped the mud from my face, fixed my jacket, and looked Lucian right in the eyes. "If you're going to shoot me," I said, keeping my voice completely steady, "do it yourself. Don't let your dogs do your job." Total silence fell over the alley. The guards looked at each other in total shock. Nobody spoke to Lucian Vance like that and lived to tell about it. Lucian didn't reach for a gun. Instead, his dark eyebrows went up. He stared at me for three long seconds, checking my face for any sign of panic or fear. He didn't find any. Slowly, a small, dangerous smile appeared on his lips. The cold look in his eyes turned into deep curiosity. He stepped closer until he was standing right in front of me. He leaned down slightly, his breath warm against my cheek. "Brave words for a girl who shouldn't be here," he whispered. "Who are you?" He thought he was in total control. He thought I was just a scared, unlucky girl who walked into the wrong alley at the wrong time. He had no idea who I really was, or what I was hiding. "Nobody you need to worry about," I said calmly, stepping back from him. "Now, are you going to kill me, or can I go home?" Lucian let out a low, quiet laugh. "Kill you?" he murmured, looking at me like I was a brand-new game he wanted to play. "No. That would be boring." He turned around and walked toward his black luxury car parked nearby. Before getting in, he looked back over his shoulder. "Put her in the back of the car," Lucian ordered his men. "We're taking her with us." "Hey!" I yelled, taking a step forward before the guards grabbed my arms again. "I'm not going anywhere with you!" Lucian smiled, his eyes dark and sharp. "You don't have a choice," he said softly. "You stepped into my world tonight. And nobody leaves until I say so." The car door shut with a heavy sound. As the guards shoved me into the back seat, I looked at Lucian. He thought he had trapped a helpless witness. He had no idea he had just walked right into my trap.
