Kenneth followed the three and joined the crowd which had gathered to watch the ceremony. Most war memorials or graves of unknown soldiers made reference to modern conflicts. Kenneth was captivated by the large relief which formed the back-drop of the ceremony taking place. This memorial displayed a dying hoplite, not surprising considering the importance and bravery of these soldiers in ancient times. Perhaps also a reminder that war is a constant, mused Kenneth, as his eyes alighted on two plaques, one either side of the hoplite. He recognised the inscriptions on them as quotations from Pericles' funeral oration in Thucydides' play, 'History of the Peloponnesian War'.
