Surprise Invitation
"Parker... Parker!" A short girl was calling, dressed in pyjamas and banging weakly against a door, she had bags under her eyes and seemed restless, her skin was ghostly pale, and she was wearing a scarf over her head to hide the obvious fact that her hair had been falling out, she made it look like a fashion trend but there was no way nobody had noticed the obvious sickness. "Parker you've been in there for thirty minutes doing nothing now!" She snapped banging on the door. On the other side, a young man had headsets blasting at full volume playing videogames on his phone. He didn't seem to have a care in the world either as he simply kept laughing with himself, this was Parker, known throughout his entire neighbourhood in Weat City as the absolute loser, at twenty-five Parker had already dropped out of college, started a business with his parents' trust fund and failed after his fiance dumped him and ran away with all of the money, and then had gambled off all the rest he could manage to get trying to pay his parents back. They were probably nice people at first, but after a full year Parker hadn't even tried getting back on his feet. Instead, he had become the butt of all jokes in his town and his name was quickly spreading as the loser. "Parker!" The girl grabbed a piece of furniture from the other side and smashed it against the door with all her strength, screaming from shock when the figurine shattered against her arm and the splinter slit her palm open. Three minutes later while Parker was still there on the inside with his legs crossed across the bathroom he noticed the pool of red that had slowly crept its way beneath the door and soaked itself up on the carpet, he didn't know what it was, but thinking something happened on the other side Parker jumped to his feet and dragged the door open after unlocking it, there beneath his foot almost getting stepped on was his sister, she had fallen unconscious leaned against the door after losing blood rapidly and failing to close the wound on her own. "Amy!" He dropped to his knees and grabbed her, then looked around the apartment to find it empty, he dared not ask where his parents were because it was his fault they had to move in the first place after they couldn't afford the house they'd been living in before, it was likely that in their old age, his parents had both left to try and find work when they really ought to have been retired already. Aside from his phone Parker threw everything aside and wrapped his sister up in a large blanket then rushed with her saddled like a doughnut in his grasp outside of the apartment complex; in his rush he forgot his shoes, and even forgot his shirt, he loved his sister more than he loved anything else in the entire world, but just had a weird way of expressing that love. At the bottom of the stairs leaving the cheap run-down apartment building Parker almost tripped with Amy, and the act of carrying her down already had him sweating as his black hair stuck to his forehead almost completely obscuring his hazel eyes, he rushed out into the middle of the street with her almost getting hit by a car, he couldn't afford one himself so this was his next best bet, he dodged the first vehicle watching as it spiralled out of control and went across the other side of the road and hit a utility post, and then he stood there trying to get the cars to stop. "Hey kid are you insane!?" A taxi driver screamed at him after coming to a stop in the middle of the road resulting in the cars behind him quickly piling up. "Sir, please can you take us to the hospital?" Parker shouted back, but the man took a single look at Parker from head to toe and judged that he didn't have the money to afford the fare and instantly stepped on the gas almost running him over, seeing what was about to happen with the other vehicles as well Parker cried out and fell to his knees right there in the middle of the road. "Somebody!" He cried out grasping on to his sister as tears rolled down his cheeks. "Someone help her please!" He cried again. "She's dying damnit where's your humanity!" Parker screamed to the passing cars, but as he opened his eyes he realized that nobody was stopping despite seeing how bad she had bled out, he didn't want to give up like that, because even if he was the i***t loser from the run-down apartment he never have up and now with his sister's life on the line he wasn't about to throw in the towel. Parker got back up to his feet and began walking, hugging Amy tightly to himself he walked, he covered her head properly and kept walking just like that in the middle of the road, losing track of time and himself and without being offered any kind of help along the way, he walked until his feet were bloodied from scraping against the road and being exposed to broken glass and shrapnel from sidewalks. Parker walked with his sister carefully saddled to himself all the way to the hospital, losing faith in people with every other step he took, he couldn't believe that nobody at all even offered to help him, at most he only remembered some people laughing at him walking in the road, while one man passing in a sports car actually yelled at him and spat on his back as he passed, this was something he would never forget; the ugliness inside of people that had led to his bankruptcy. With his sister in the hospital, Parker zoned out, even though the nurses tried stopping him so they could treat his feet he just kept walking until the rain was beating against him again, and then he stopped and looked forward, he was at the entrance to the hospital. "There really is no hope in this world for anyone is there?" He asked himself then reached into his pocket, taking out his phone and dialing his mother, but before she could answer the phone shorted out from the heavy rain pouring into it and getting the circuits wet. "What the hell man..." Parker dipped his phone back into his pocket and began walking again, out further into the rain where he found a hospital bench and took a seat out there. He already knew that he couldn't afford the bill, for her treatment, but he didn't have a choice, either he brought her or she'd have died, in fact, she was as cold as a corpse already. When he handed her over to the staff, he could only hope now that she had somehow made it, while he was there staring at his bloody feet in the rain the rain stopped hitting him and a pair of shoes stopped at his toes almost squishing them. He slowly looked up to see a young woman dressed in business attire, there was not much to identify her by, she had shoulder-length brown hair with bangs and brown eyes, her looks were average at best and she didn't seem like anyone special, and she had a briefcase in her grasp with the abbreviation W.I.C. on it, he knew that logo, it was on every window of every store in Weat City, they basically owned everything. "Parker Carter." she smiled and dropped a small towel in his lap. "How do you know my name?" He asked her drily picking up the towel and looking back up at her. "I've never seen you before in my life." "I'm well aware Mr Carter," She replied kindly. "I have seen you though, you have quite the reputation right now-" "What do you want?" He interrupted her getting straight to the point, leaving her to fumble through her head for a respectable response. "Congratulations Mr. Carter, you have met the conditions and have been selected as candidate #303 to take part in the coming twenty-third season of The Eclipse Survival Games, hosted By the WIC company annually every four months, consider this your official invitation to join the billion dollar competition." She smiled at him and reached into her pocket for a business card placing it in his opened palm. "That's if you accept though, until you refuse, your spot will remain exclusive to your name, you have a week to contact us before we reshuffle your number and select someone else. "Wait..." Parker stared up at her in disbelief. "What are you talking about?" He asked, but she only gave him another smile before a black private car pulled up beneath her. "One week Mr Carter, the line will remain open." She said before retreating into the vehicle and then leaving. "What?"
