I hover over Alex where I’d stopped to clean blood off of his face. His palm is still covering my mouth. My eyes widen in fear staring down at him. My fingers slip into his hair. I need to find out how badly he was injured. I couldn’t tell who, or what was near us, but if it’s any kind of threat, I don’t think I can move Alex. And I can’t even consider just leaving him here. “Alex, look at me,” I say into his hand. “I’m looking at you,” he whispers. “Does this hurt?” I push my fingers through his hair and poke along his scalp. His hair is wet with blood, and tears well in my eyes. He winces slightly, and lets his hand curl off my mouth to cup my cheek. I squeal, full of worry, but Alex just whispers, “shhh.
