CHAPTER ONE
“THE WOMAN WHO WALKED INTO HIS WORLD” Elena Hart had learned one important lesson from life: Never walk into a room expecting anything to go according to plan. Unfortunately, that lesson had come about twenty minutes too late. She stood in front of the enormous glass doors of Vale International, staring at the building rising above her like a wall of steel and money. Forty-seven floors. Black glass. Polished marble. Security guards who looked like they could identify a criminal from three blocks away. And somewhere at the top of it all was Adrian Vale. The billionaire. The CEO. The man whose name appeared in business magazines almost as often as it appeared in gossip columns. Elena tightened her grip around the folder in her hands. She wasn't here to meet him. At least, she wasn't supposed to be. Her meeting was with Daniel Brooks, the company's senior acquisitions director. If everything went well, the small investment proposal she had prepared could become the lifeline her family desperately needed. It was a long shot. But Elena had never been afraid of long shots. She stepped inside. The lobby was even more intimidating than the exterior. Everything was perfectly arranged, from the enormous chandelier hanging above the reception desk to the silent elevators lined with silver panels. A receptionist looked up. "Good morning. How may I help you?" "Elena Hart. I have a meeting with Mr. Brooks at eleven." The woman checked her screen. "Mr. Brooks is running late." Elena glanced at the clock. Ten fifty-eight. "I can wait." "Of course." Elena moved toward the seating area, but her phone vibrated. A message from her younger sister. Did you get there? Elena smiled faintly. Yes. Wish me luck. The reply came almost immediately. You don't need luck. You need them to realize how smart you are. For a moment, Elena's anxiety disappeared. Then another message appeared. And please don't argue with any billionaire. Elena almost laughed. Too late for that, probably. She put her phone away. Ten minutes passed. Then twenty. Still no Daniel Brooks. Eventually, the receptionist approached her with an apologetic expression. "I'm sorry, Ms. Hart. Mr. Brooks has been called into an emergency meeting upstairs. He asked that you wait in the executive conference room." "Upstairs?" "Forty-second floor." Elena hesitated. "All right." The elevator doors closed behind her. As the numbers climbed, she watched the city shrink beneath the glass wall. Thirty floors. Thirty-five. Forty. She stepped out onto the forty-second floor. The atmosphere was completely different. There were fewer employees. Less noise. More security. A man in a dark suit approached her. "Ms. Hart?" "Yes." "Mr. Brooks isn't available yet. His assistant asked me to direct you to the executive office." Elena frowned. "The conference room?" "Mr. Vale's executive office." She stopped walking. "Mr. Vale?" The man nodded. "He's expecting you." Elena's stomach tightened. That couldn't be right. She checked her email. No mention of Adrian Vale. No appointment. Nothing. "Are you sure?" "Yes, ma'am." Before she could ask anything else, the man had already walked away. Elena stared after him. Then she sighed. Maybe Adrian Vale wanted to know what kind of investment his company was considering. Fine. She could handle one billionaire. Probably. She walked down the corridor and stopped outside a pair of enormous dark wooden doors. There was no assistant sitting outside. No receptionist. Only silence. Elena knocked. Nothing. She knocked again. Still nothing. Maybe he wasn't inside. She pushed the door open. "Mr. Vale?" Silence. The office was enormous. Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked the city. A black desk stood near the windows, perfectly organized. Bookshelves covered one wall. A single painting hung opposite the desk. And then Elena noticed the man standing beside the window. He turned. Her breath caught. Adrian Vale was younger than she expected. Thirty-two, perhaps. Tall. Broad-shouldered. Dressed in a perfectly tailored black suit with no visible imperfection. But it wasn't his appearance that made Elena freeze. It was his eyes. Cold. Sharp. Completely unreadable. His gaze moved over her without a word. Then he looked at the folder in her hands. "Who are you?" Elena blinked. "Elena Hart." "I didn't ask for your name." His voice was calm. Too calm. "I asked who sent you." Elena straightened. "Mr. Brooks." Something flickered across his expression. Gone almost instantly. "Daniel Brooks?" "Yes." "He didn't send you." Elena frowned. "He scheduled my meeting." "With him." "Yes." "Not with me." She looked around the office. "Then why was I told to come here?" Adrian walked toward her. Slowly. Deliberately. Every step made the room feel smaller. "You tell me." Elena didn't move. "I'm beginning to think your company has a communication problem." One eyebrow lifted. Most people would have apologized. Elena wasn't most people. "You're either remarkably confident," Adrian said, "or remarkably careless." "Neither." "What, then?" "Late." For the first time, something almost resembling amusement appeared in his eyes. Almost. "You've been waiting downstairs?" "Twenty-seven minutes." "And you're angry." "I'm hungry." A pause. Then Adrian looked away. It was the smallest reaction, but Elena noticed it. She smiled. "I'll take that as an apology." "You shouldn't." "Fair enough." She stepped toward the desk. "I'll leave the proposal here and reschedule with Mr. Brooks." "Don't." Elena stopped. Adrian walked past her and picked up the folder. His fingers brushed hers. Neither moved for half a second. Then Elena pulled her hand away. Adrian opened the folder. His expression changed as he read. Not impressed. Not bored. Interested. "You prepared this yourself?" "Yes." "Your projected return is unrealistic." "It's conservative." "It's optimistic." "There's a difference." He looked up. Their eyes met. "You've done your research." "I always do." "Yet you walked into the wrong office." Elena folded her arms. "I was directed here." "By someone who shouldn't have directed you here." "Then perhaps you should speak to them instead of interrogating me." Silence. Adrian closed the folder. "You don't know who I am." Elena almost smiled. "Everyone knows who you are." "Then you should know better than to speak to me like that." "Why?" His jaw tightened. "Because people usually regret it." Elena held his gaze. "Maybe people around you are too easily intimidated." For several seconds, neither spoke. Something changed in the room. The hostility was still there. But beneath it was something else. Something neither of them seemed willing to name. Adrian broke eye contact first. He placed the folder on the desk. "You should leave." "Gladly." Elena turned. Then she saw it. A second folder lay partially hidden beneath a stack of papers on the corner of the desk. The cover was slightly open. A photograph was visible. She wouldn't have noticed it if the name hadn't caught her eye. HART. Her entire body went still. She turned back. Adrian was watching her. "What is that?" "Nothing." "That says Hart." His expression hardened. "Leave, Ms. Hart." Elena took one step toward the desk. "Why do you have my family's name?" Adrian didn't answer. She looked at the photograph again. There were three people in it. A much younger Adrian. An older man Elena recognized immediately. Her father. And beside him— A woman Elena hadn't seen in years. Her mother. Her heart slammed against her ribs. "Where did you get that?" Adrian's face became unreadable. "That photograph doesn't concern you." "My mother is in it." Silence. "And my father." She looked at him. "What is going on?" Adrian's voice dropped. "You need to leave." "Not until you tell me why you have that." "Elena." It was the first time he'd said her name. And somehow, hearing it from him felt different. More personal. More dangerous. "Leave." She stared at him. Then at the photograph. Then back at the billionaire standing across from her. For the first time, Adrian Vale didn't look like a man who controlled everything. He looked like a man protecting something. Something buried. Something that had just been dragged into the light. Elena slowly picked up her folder. "I'm going to find out what that photograph means." Adrian's eyes darkened. "I wouldn't." "That's not your decision." She turned toward the door. "Elena." She stopped. His voice was quieter now. "If you start digging into the past, you may find something you wish you'd never known." She looked over her shoulder. "Maybe." A faint, fearless smile touched her lips. "But now I definitely want to know." Then she walked out. The door closed behind her. Adrian remained motionless. His eyes stayed on the door long after she disappeared. Then he looked at the photograph on his desk. The photograph he had spent ten years making sure no one ever saw. His jaw tightened. "Who sent you, Elena Hart?" For the first time in a decade, Adrian Vale was afraid. Not for his company. Not for his fortune. For the secret he had sworn would never come back. And somewhere b elow, Elena Hart stepped into an elevator, unaware that the moment she had entered Adrian Vale's office, she had also stepped into a war that had begun long before she was ready to fight it.
