Chapter 8: Job Interview

After Rachen left, Manow focused on her work until closing time, then packed up to close the shop. "I'm leaving now, Fon. See you tomorrow." Manow said goodbye to Fon after finishing up at the shop. "Alright, take care. I told you to use my motorbike, but you refused." "I feel guilty. Besides, I don't want to answer questions at home. If they see the bike, they'll want to use it too. I'm off now. Goodbye, Fon." Manow said to Fon with a slight smile, and Fon just nodded in agreement. Then Manow walked out of the shop immediately. Beep Beep While she was walking along the roadside, a luxurious black sports car honked at her and pulled over to the side of the road where she was walking. When he rolled down the window, she sighed instantly. "What is it?" Manow asked Rachen with a weary expression. "Are you going home? Get in the car, I'll give you a ride." "No, it's okay. I can get home by myself." After speaking, Manow walked past Rachen's car immediately. Rachen drove slowly alongside her until they reached the bus stop where she was waiting. Then he grinned, got out of the car, and approached her. "Sweetheart, get in the car. Stop being mad. Your husband is here to make up with you, okay?" Rachen's words left Manow shocked with her mouth agape. "Are you crazy? Who's your wife? Go away." Manow shouted at Rachen loudly, while Rachen put on a sad face and continued speaking. "Get in the car, honey. I messed up. The traffic was terrible, so I came late." Rachen kept a gloomy face while speaking to Manow, drawing the attention of everyone around. "Get in the car with your husband, sweetie. If he’s apologizing this much, I would have gotten in and gone home to cuddle a long time ago." The voice of an older woman waiting for the bus with her spoke with a smile, making Manow quickly try to explain. "No..." "See, honey. Even the lady here sees my effort to make up with you. Get in the car, please." As Manow was about to deny being his wife, Rachen interrupted her. When she turned to see everyone waiting for the bus looking at her, she sighed and agreed to get in the car with him. Seeing Manow get in, Rachen hurried back to the car. "What the heck is wrong with you? Why did you do that, you i***t!" Once Rachen got in the car and drove for a bit, Manow began yelling and repeatedly hitting his arm. "Ouch! Stop hitting me, can't you see I'm driving here?" Manow tried to calm herself, sitting silently until Rachen glanced at her. "Sorry, but if I hadn't done that, you wouldn't have gotten in the car." "And why do you have to keep bothering me?" Manow asked, clearly annoyed. "I noticed it was getting dark, and I just wanted to give you a ride since it's on my way to the condo." "Then can you just drop me off at the alley entrance?" Manow began to calm down when Rachen spoke to her calmly. "Okay." During the drive, they didn't speak. Manow kept wondering why Rachen was bothering with her, while Rachen was thinking about how to make her his. After a while, they reached the entrance of Manow's alley. "Thanks for the lift." "Manow." The sound of her name startled Manow a bit because she didn't expect him to know her name. "How do you know my name?" "Did you forget that we slept together? Do you think I'd sleep with someone whose name I don't know?" Rachen's words made her eyes go wide. She had actually forgotten about that because she was too busy thinking about her own family problems. "Oh... yeah." Manow stammered, feeling awkward, while Rachen smiled affectionately at her reaction. "My name's Chen. Remember it, don't just call me 'you'." "Okay." Manow acknowledged Rachen's words and quickly opened the door to get out of the car, running off without listening to Rachen calling after her. "Wait, hey! Not listening till the end again, you little troublemaker. Why's it so hard to get your number?" After speaking, Rachen drove off, frustrated that he couldn't get a way to contact his little troublemaker. Meanwhile, as Manow walked home, she couldn't stop thinking about Rachen's face, her heart racing when he called her name and introduced himself. "Chen, huh? Remembering it won't hurt. At least I know the name of the guy I lost my virginity to." Manow muttered to herself softly and walked into the house, but she had to stop abruptly because of her mother's call. "You, Manow, give me 100 dollars. I'm heading out now." Manow sighed and walked over to her mother. She decided to tell her about being fired, hoping her mother might sympathize with her. "Mom, I've been fired from the bar. I haven't found a new job yet. At the café, I only work on weekends and earn just a little money." "And what about it? How on earth did you get fired? You better go apply for a job today. If you don't get a job today, I'll tear your room apart. Now give me the money." Manow could only look at her mother with a sense of hurt, wondering if she was really her mother's child, as her mother showed no sympathy. Seeing her mother wouldn't relent, she took out her wallet, but her mother snatched it away, emptied it, and threw it back at her. "Well, there's 150 dollars today. Now go out and find a job." Manow walked out of the house, tears streaming down her face. She wasn't angry at her mother for taking the money, but she felt hurt that her mother never asked or cared about her, even though she had just finished work. Since her mother wouldn't let her back in, she decided to go job hunting again. This time, she walked further than ever because the nearby places weren't hiring. By nearly 8 PM, she was exhausted and about to head home when she saw a sign for a server position at MDR Pub. She decided to go in. "Excuse me, I saw the sign for a server position. Are you still hiring?" Manow asked the guard at the entrance. "Yes, we are. Please go to the back of the store, and I'll take you to the manager." "Thank you." Manow followed the guard to the back of the store and stopped in front of a door labeled "Manager's Office." The guard asked her to wait outside and went in. "May I get this job, please." Manow prayed for good luck. After a while, the guard came out with a well-dressed man who was clearly the manager. She greeted him with a bow. "Hello." "Are you here to apply for a server position?" Phineas asked the woman in front of him again. "Yes." "Honestly, with your looks, you'd be better suited as a PR." Phineas suggested a different position for Manow, as her striking appearance and figure seemed unsuitable for a server role. "I'm not comfortable with that kind of work." Manow said straightforwardly. "Alright, I'll take you to the owner then. The owner here interviews all the employees personally." "Okay." After Manow agreed, Phineas led her up to the second floor. One side seemed to be a VIP area for customers, while the other side had three office rooms. Noticing Manow's curious expression, Phineas explained. "This pub has three owners, so there are three office rooms." "Oh, okay." Manow's curiosity was satisfied, and she followed Phineas to one of the rooms. "Please wait here for a moment. I'll go in and check if Mr. Rachen is available to interview you since we didn't schedule an appointment." Hearing the pub owner's name, Manow furrowed her brows, thinking it couldn't possibly be the same person. "Okay." Manow replied shortly and waited outside. After a while, Phineas came out. "You can go inside now. Mr. Rachen is ready to interview you." "Thank you." Manow bowed to thank Phineas and walked into the room, but she still couldn't see the pub owner as he was sitting with his back to her at his desk. "Hello, I'm here for the job interview." "You!" The familiar sweet voice made Rachen quickly turn around, surprised to see the troublemaker there for an interview. Manow was equally shocked, and they both exclaimed simultaneously.
