Chapter 1: Only Once
"Chen, can't you stay a bit longer? I can make it worth your while." Mai said to Rachen.
"No, I can't."
Rachen bluntly refused the beautiful junior from another university after they had finished their time together in bed.
"Do you have urgent work? Is that why you don't want to go another round? Never mind, I can come to see you at your condo tomorrow."
The beautiful girl said, her hand still lingering on his firm, muscular chest to entice him, but she paused when she heard the unexpected words.
"When I said no, I meant no. This ends here. Just once, and we go our separate ways."
Rachen stated his rejection coldly, without any hint of attachment. He never intended to get serious with the woman in front of him—or with any of the many women he had been with. Most girls knew him as Rachen Simons, a third-year mechanical engineering student and the second most handsome guy at a prestigious private university. Nicknamed the "Engineering Playboy," he was the target of many women’s affections—including this girl, Mai, whom he had met at a bar and brought home for nothing more than a night in bed.
"W-What do you mean? Are you planning to just f**k with me and then throw me away? No! I'm not going to take that!"
"Heh, I believe we agreed on this before we even did anything."
Rachen spoke in a calm, matter-of-fact tone. Before they had even come to the hotel, he had made it clear—just one night, no strings attached, no relationship. If she couldn’t accept that, he wouldn’t have gone through with it. He had no intention of making a girl this easy his girlfriend. His patience was wearing thin as the girl in front of him refused to follow their agreement.
"I really like you, Chen! Even though we go to different universities, I follow you on every platform. We don’t have to be in a relationship—I’d be fine with keeping it a secret."
"I’ll give you 500 dollars, and we go our separate ways. But if you insist, you’ll get nothing at all. Think carefully."
Rachen made his offer. The girl hesitated for a moment before finally accepting the money and leaving in frustration. Once she was gone, Rachen let out a sigh, his expression filled with boredom.
"Are all women this easy?" he muttered to himself.
Truthfully, he never intended to become this kind of playboy. But being both handsome and wealthy, on top of being naturally friendly, made women constantly throw themselves at him. He never pursued anyone first. Every girl he had been with had come to him—and it always ended after just one night.
After getting dressed, Rachen immediately drove back to his condo. He never liked staying anywhere other than his condo, home, or his own nightclub.
Screech!
"s**t!"
As Rachen drove back, a woman suddenly ran into the road, right in front of his car. Luckily, he wasn’t driving too fast.
"Please help me!"
Rachen glanced at his side mirror and saw the woman knocking on his window, pleading for help. He immediately rolled it down.
"What happened?"
When he got a clear look at her face, he froze. She was stunning. She wore a tight-fitting T-shirt and long jeans, her figure slightly curvy with a defined waist. Her chest and hips were well-proportioned, and her large, round eyes, soft lips, and delicate nose made her irresistibly attractive.
"Can I just hop in and get off at the next bus stop? Please, three men have been following me," she pleaded.
Manow had just finished her shift as a waitress at a bar and was walking home like she did every night. But tonight, she felt unsafe—those three men were customers from her workplace, and they had been trailing her since she left. Desperate, she had no choice but to run in front of the nearest car she saw, hoping for help.
"Just for a bit, I promise! You can drop me off as soon as they’re out of sight. Please!"
"Get in."
Rachen checked his rearview mirror before unlocking the door. The men in question were standing at a distance, watching. As soon as he gave the green light, Manow quickly ran to the other side of the car and got in. Without hesitation, he drove off immediately.
"Thank you so much! You don’t have to take me far—just until they’re gone. You can stop then," she said after a while, feeling safer now that they had left the men behind.
After driving for a bit, Manow asked Rachane to stop, feeling they were safely out of sight of the men.
"Where do you live? I'll drive you there."
Manow frowned immediately when the person next to her asked.
"Drop me off right here."
"I'll take you home myself."
"Hey! Are you deaf or something? I told you to stop. I can get home by myself."
Manow snapped at Rachane, clearly annoyed. She thought she had made a mistake asking this seemingly untrustworthy man for help. Jumping from the frying pan into the fire.
"Heh, if you can get home on your own, why did you ask for my help in the first place? Don't worry, I'm not interested in you. Just looking at your face is a turn-off."
Rachane teased, provoking Manow's anger. She was quite pretty, but he spoke to her like that.
"If you're not interested, then just stop the car. I asked for help because your face looks like you're not a real man. With such a sweet face, you must have spent a fortune. Ah! Are you nuts? Stopping the car like that, did you buy your driver's license or something?"
Manow yelled at the person next to her immediately when he suddenly braked, causing her face to almost hit the dashboard, luckily she had her seatbelt on.
"You say I'm not a real man, but have you tried me? Want to give it a try to see how manly I am?"
Rachane spoke up irritably. No woman had ever insulted him like this before. How could someone call his strong, handsome face sweet?
"I don't want to try because just looking at your face kills the mood. Ugh! Let go of me, you idiot."
"Ouch!"
After speaking, Manow opened the door to get out of the car but was grabbed by his strong hand. In shock, Manow hit Rachane's face with her bag, causing him to cry out in pain and release her. As soon as he let go, Manow quickly got out of the car and ran forward.
"Damn, she's got a heavy hand. Ouch."
Once Rachane regained his composure, he looked towards the woman who was running into a small alley. He followed her with his car and parked at the entrance of the alley without turning in. He saw her entering a small house and sighed in relief that she got home safely.
"Why the hell did you follow her, Rachane?"
Rachane muttered to himself quietly, not understanding why he followed that sassy woman. After a bit of internal debate, he drove back to his condo.
Meanwhile, as Manow reached her house, she grumbled about the guy she had just hit.
"What an annoying guy! I hit him that hard, I hope I never see him again, amen."
As Manow was talking to herself, she hurriedly opened the door to her house. As she entered, she let out an exasperated sigh at the state of the house, which was filled with liquor bottles and scattered belongings. Her mother and stepfather were nowhere to be seen, likely already asleep in their room. The house she lived in was an old rental with just two bedrooms and a single bathroom. After her father passed away, her life took a drastic turn. Her biological mother remarried and left all responsibilities to her. Her mother and stepfather refused to work, spending their days drinking and gambling. Manow had to work to support herself and her family. Currently, she is in her third year of university. Manow had won scholarships to both private and public universities because she was an excellent student.
She was a top student, but she chose to study at a public university because, even though she didn’t have to pay tuition fees, she still had daily expenses. If she had chosen a private university, she would have had to cover multiple costs, so she opted for a school she could afford instead.
As Manow tidied up, she couldn’t help but feel disheartened by her fate. She had no idea what she had done in her past life to deserve such hardship. Every morning, she had to attend classes, and every evening, she worked at a bar. On weekends, she took a part-time job at a café across from a well-known private university.
Once she finished cleaning up, she quickly took a shower and went straight to bed, exhausted. Juggling school and late-night shifts drained her energy, and the moment her head hit the pillow, she fell into a deep sleep.
