Chapter 1 aria pov
The rain had a way of making Aria Bennett feel less alone. Each drop that pattered against the rusted tin roof of her bedroom seemed to hum in harmony with the melodies that constantly swirled inside her head. Tonight, as the storm whispered outside her cracked window, she sat on the edge of her narrow bed with a battered notebook on her lap, scribbling the fragments of a song she would never dare let anyone hear. Her pencil moved in rhythm to a tune only she could hear, the hum of her voice barely audible. Soft, trembling notes filled the tiny room, her sanctuary from the world that waited outside where her limp and threadbare clothes made her a target, where whispers and laughter always followed her down the school hallway. Aria knew what they called her. Poor, Cripple,Ghost. The words stung more than she wanted to admit, though she pretended they rolled off her back like rainwater. She had grown used to being invisible, the girl shoved aside, mocked, overlooked. But music never overlooked her. She closed her eyes, allowing the lyrics to spill out in a whisper. “If only they could see me, not the girl they think I am…” The line broke off. Her throat tightened. She pushed the notebook aside, burying her face in her hands. It was foolish to dream. What good could come from a lame girl in worn-out sneakers who could barely afford lunch at school? A sudden pounding on the door snapped her out of her thoughts. “Aria!” her younger brother’s voice called. “Dinner’s ready. Don’t let it get cold.” She quickly shoved the notebook under her pillow before limping toward the door. Her right leg dragged slightly a permanent reminder of the childhood accident that had left her with a limp and a lifetime of pitying stares. Downstairs, the scent of tomato stew filled the air. Her mother, exhausted from her double shift at the diner, managed a tired smile as Aria slid into her seat. Their meals were simple, barely enough, but Aria never complained. She knew her mother worked herself to the bone just to keep them afloat. “You’re awfully quiet tonight,” her mother said, handing her a plate. “I was just…writing,” Aria murmured. Her mother’s smile softened. She didn’t ask more. She never did. Music was Aria’s secret world, and though her mother encouraged her to sing, Aria kept most of her songs locked away. The world outside wasn’t kindbshe wasn’t ready to hand it another weapon to use against her. The next morning, the cruel laughter returned like clockwork. “Hey, Bennett! Try not to trip on your own feet!” Aria kept her head down as she shuffled into the school hallway, hugging her books tightly against her chest. She had learned long ago that answering back only fueled them. Her silence was their victory, but at least it kept the fire from spreading. Today, though, their voices seemed sharper than usual, filled with anticipation. She didn’t realize why until she passed the bulletin board near the cafeteria. A colorful poster caught her eye: Silver City Rising Star Competition Annual Singing Showcase Her breath caught. The competition was famous broadcast on local TV, packed with talent scouts, the stage lit brighter than any dream. She had watched it from home every year, heart aching with envy, wondering what it would feel like to stand under that spotlight. “Maybe you should try out, Bennett,” one of the boys sneered, following her gaze. “They always need someone to sweep the stage afterward.” Laughter erupted. Aria forced herself to walk away, cheeks burning. She didn’t notice the dark-haired boy leaning casually against the lockers across the hall, his eyes following her with faint curiosity. Ethan Blake. He was everything she wasn’t popular, wealthy, confident to the point of arrogance. Girls swooned when he smirked their way; boys envied his easy charm. Once, years ago, he had mocked her like the rest, tossing careless words that had cut deeper than he’d ever know. Aria had never forgotten. That night, curled in bed with her notebook, Aria tried to shake the image of the poster from her mind. She would never belong on a stage like that. But still, she couldn’t help it the thought of singing, really singing, in front of people tugged at her like an unfinished chord. She pressed her lips together and hummed a melody. It was fragile, hesitant at first, then stronger, rising from deep within her chest. For a moment, she imagined it the blinding lights, the hush of the crowd, her voice soaring free of shame. She let herself believe. Just for a moment. The next day, whispers chased her before she even set foot inside the classroom. Confused, she slid into her seat, only to hear the words that turned her stomach cold. “Did you hear? Aria Bennett signed up for the Rising Star Competition!” Her head snapped up. “What? I didn’t—” The smirking faces told her everything. Someone had put her name down. And suddenly, the laughter made sense. It was a prank. A cruel joke. Aria’s hands trembled as she gripped her desk. Her gaze darted across the room some were snickering, others whispering in disbelief. And then her eyes landed on Ethan, lounging in his seat near the window, one brow raised in surprise. Their gazes locked. For a heartbeat, she couldn’t look away. His expression wasn’t mocking not exactly. It was something else Curious Measuring. Her chest tightened. The bell rang, shattering the moment. But the damage was done. Her name was on that list. Whether she liked it or not, Aria Bennett was going to stand on that stage. And nothing would ever be the same.
