Epilogue
Temilola Ahmad’s P.O.V
“Mom, dad, we are going to be late” screamed Mariam at the top of her lungs from outside our room as Mubarak looks at me from across the bedroom.
Today is the graduation day of our 15-year-old daughter Mariam eniola ahmad as she finishes her secondary school at brilliant minds academy. She’s in a bit of hysteria as we climbed down the stairs 20 minutes later to find her fussing over something. Frustration evident in her face. I looked at my 10-year-old son in disapproval as he seems to be fighting back laughter.
Mom, she’s been like that for the past half hour; Khalifa babatunde ahmad our son says
My princess, what’s wrong? Mubarak ahmad, my husband and the father of our two wonderful kids says.
Daddy, I can’t find my golden shoes; cried Mariam covering her face in frustration.
I went over to her embracing her; sweetheart, calm down, everything would be fine. It’s at the foot of your bed. I kept it there yesterday night after you had gone to bed, go and check there.
She runs upstairs as I set to the task of preparing breakfast consisting of bread and egg washing it down with tea. 15 minutes later, Mariam comes down looking priceless in her emerald green dress and her cream wrap.
Oh my princess, you look beautiful. Mubarak says.
Yes, dear, you look astonishing, come sit down and have some breakfast. I say.
Thanks mom, thanks dad. I love you guys so much. Mariam says sitting down.
Oh, what about me, you don’t love me abi? Khalifa says pouting
Of course I do… You’re the sweetest brother a girl could wish for even though you can be naughty at times…. Uhm... scratch that, you’re naughty all the times. Mariam says smirking.
Quit teasing each other. Mubarak says amidst laughter.
………………
45 minutes later, I’m entering the school with my kids as Mubarak is at the parking lot looking for space to park the car. I set about to where the parents are seated to look for suitable seats for my husband and I as I lose sight of my kids off to find their friends.
……………..
MARIAM ENIOLA AHMAD!... I watch pride filing my heart as my daughter gets called up to join her classmates on the podium for graduating students.
After calling all the graduating students, one of them comes up to deliver a speech and they proceed to throw their graduation caps up.
Temilola, wait for me na…. my husband calls out as I rush to go find khalifa so we can take family pictures with his sister. He eventually catches up to me and squeezes my hand. I look up to him and he smiles. Damn! That smile! That boyish smile that captured my heart from the first time I set my eyes on him.
A few family pictures after, we are driving to an eatery to celebrate our daughters’ success. We reach the eatery, park and enter the eatery. A waiter comes to take our order as we settle down on four of the seats. As I look at my husband and children chatting and teasing each other. My heart swells with happiness and love. Something I never thought I would encounter in my life!.
