A Distraction

Maze P.O.V It’s been three months since we got caught by the queen and yelled at. We haven’t tried to plan another outing because we were worried about what the queen would do if we did. I‘ve also been trying to uncover what the queen had been meaning since she last talked to me, but so far I haven’t found much. We didn’t talk in the castle, But we did meet up during lunch and talked for some time. Over time, we became really close. Kyle also started to become more confident in himself because of Austin. Along with that, Damien and I have become good friends since the incident. He had helped me forget about what happened and also introduced me to his friend Max. I had to admit, they were a lot of fun to hang out with.  After my studies, I was scheduled to have dinner with the royal family. I haven’t said anything to the king nor has Kyle, but we also haven’t had any issues with the queen. I walk down the halls with Damien, talking about tomorrows day. As we approach the dining hall, my sister walks out. I haven’t really talked to my sister since our family visited, but she has been giving me stink eyes for a while. She turns to Damien and her faces completely change; “Damien~ I missed you!” She said pressing herself against him, I felt some sort of discomfort with her hugging Damien, I think it was because I knew what type of person she was, “Don’t touch me, Rebecca. I’m here on behalf of the princess, not you.” He said pushing her off. “Whatever, say can I have lunch with you?~ I promise I won’t bother your friends~” She said while touching him. I quickly grabbed her arm and lift it up away from Damien. “Sorry Rebecca, but we are in a hurry,” I said with a smile. Rebecca pulled back her hand and looked at both Damien and me. I grabbed Damien’s arm and headed into the dining room. I felt completely different and I still didn’t understand. We enter the room and see the king and queen along with Kyle already at the table. “Maze, glad you could make it. Please sit we’re just about to start.” He said signaling to the chair next to Kyle. “Damien you may wait outside.” said the king. I looked back at Damien and he was still there. “Damien, you can leave,” I looked at Damien and he looked at me as if he was waiting for me to signal him away.  “You can go, Damien,” I said directed to him. He left and closed the door. I make my way to the table and sit down by Kyle. Kyle and I gave each other a look of confusion since usually, the guards would be inside during meals. The king cleared his throat and said, “Maze, these last months with you have been an exciting time for my family and me, Kyle has finally started to become more like his old man and my wife has also taken a liking to you.” He said smiling. The king is so clueless about what is happening in his own home. I’m interrupted by the queen beginning to talk, “Now dear, don’t forget why we called them here.” She said with a cheeky grin across her face. “Of course Dear, so we’ve decided that we want you to begin to work current castle.” He said in a grand voice. I was shocked, I’ve only been here for 5 months and I’m already being involved with current affairs. “Sir, are you sure that is wise? Not that I’m questioning your authority, but I haven’t been here as long as others.” I said concerned. “I’ve been asking Emily for your results after your simulations and we have also been putting recent projects in your studies, which show promising results.” He said optimistically. I could tell by the queen’s expression that she wasn’t informed of the king’s decision. “Darling, you said that you were taking Ms. Maze her off her studies because they weren’t useful,” she said nervously. “Yes, because she has shown that she has more intelligence than my other superiors on these issues. I believe that you will make a good candidate.” Said the king. I was surprised, I didn’t think this would happen. I hesitated, worrying about what the queen would think about this. Would she make my life hell for being closer to the king then she’d like me to be? Or would she place me in ways of danger? These thoughts blurred my mind like thick fog consuming a mountain.  “Father, shouldn’t you go easy on Maze, she also wants to feel comfortable.” Said Kyle. The king was about to speak when the queen said, “Well son, leaders need second hands and since you aren’t as fit for the job for reasons, we don’t have many choices.” He said. Was he just saying Kyle’s weak because of what that witch said of his fate? How can a father treat his son like that?! This was the same way he talked about Kyle when we first met. I slam my hands on the table turning all their eyes towards me. “I’m sorry your highness, but I can’t accept this offer,” I said with my head down. “Why not?” He asked me. “You act like you don’t know. Your son, who has endured your neglect, should be respected as an individual.” I said pointing to Kyle. “What are you rambling about? I care for my so-,” He said before I cut him off. “Don’t play innocent. Your son, the prince, is one of the most admirable person I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. And your wife, basically saying he could never fit that position angers me.” I said in rage. I felt anger rising from me that I have never felt before. But it also felt right. The room fills with the cracks of the fire breaking the logs of wood. Kyle looked at me with a shocked look, but closely he was starting to tear up. “Now, I think Kyle and I are done here,” I said grabbing Kyle’s arm and taking him with me out the door. “Wait, Maze! I command you to stop,” Said the King shouting. I stop before the door and said, “I don’t wait for cowards.” I said slamming the door as I walked out.
