Unmatchable

Maze P.O.V

I stormed down the hall while Kyle and Damien tried to keep up with me. Even through them constantly calling my name, I didn’t;

“What happened?” Asked Damien concerned,

“Maze just raged out in front of my father.” Said Kyle worried,

“Why? Wasn’t it just dinner?” Said Damien confused,

“Not everything behind a door is one place,” 

We reach my room and I open the doors with full force. This rage I'm feeling isn’t leaving, It feels like I’m about to scream my lungs out.

“Prince, I can handle it from here,” said Damien,

Kyle leaves and closes the door, leaving me and Damien in the room. I can hear Damien’s footsteps walking towards me and stopping behind me.

“You know that anger won’t solve anything.” Said Damien directly, I turned to face him.

“It will just put you on a path of irreversible actions. It might seem right in the moment, but later on, the guilt will just sink you into an abyss of darkness.” He said looking outside the terrace.

I realize the way that I acted would come back to haunt me later. I just yelled at the king because of a suspicion. I could be sent to the dungeon for this. What was I thinking?! I keep letting my morals cloud my thinking. Damien touches my shoulders and says,

“Hey Princess, you need to relax. I don’t want to carry you to the infirmary.” He said jokingly, I looked at him with a pissed off look.

He cleared his throat and said, “Just listen to me, inhale, exhale. Inhale, exhale.” He said instructing me.

I breathed in and out, calming down with every breath. Damien made sure I completely let go of the rage. After a few minutes, I finally calm down and think about what happened. I felt terrible for Kyle, I don’t know how much worse I made his relationship with his parents.

Damien grabs me and hugs me. I never took him for the hugging type, but I needed that hug. 

“Don’t expect this to be a regular thing. You just look like you need it.” He said.

I felt that sense of safety again like before. I melted into his arms and I never wanted to leave. After a few minutes, we broke the hug.

“Thanks, Damien, that helped,” I said smiling.

After a few seconds, Damien asked me, “Do you trust me?”

I didn’t understand why he’d ask me that question. I’m trusting him to protect my life, why would he ask?

“Yeah, that’s what your job requires,” I said chuckling.

“No, do you trust me?” He said looking into my eyes.

I then realized he wasn’t asking because of his job.

“Yes, I trust you,” I said looking at him.

He smiled and said, “Then at 10 o'clock, wait for me.” He said.

I was confused and sort of nervous about why he wanted me to wait for him.

“Ok,” I said confidently.

He left the room, leaving me to my curiosity of what is to come. I went to shower and refresh myself from what just happened.

~Few hours later~

It was soon arriving at 10 o’clock and I was starting to think about my decision. Was I being pranked or was it real? Just as I thought that I heard a knock on my door. I walked up and opened the door to see Damien at the door. I open the door wider to see Kyle next to Damien as well. 

“You ready?” Asked Damien.

I gave a nod and followed him to the place.

We walk to the back of the castle and walk through the back doors. We make it into the garden and then notice a bonfire lighting in the forest. As we walked closer, we saw the workers around the fire dancing and eating goods. It looked fun and exciting.

“What is this?!” I said excitedly,

“Every two weeks, our bosses go into the town to go to the pubs. So we decided to come into the woods during those times to avoid the royals and just spend time to ourselves.” Said Damien.

“But won’t they get nervous because Kyle’s here?” I said concerned.

“It’s alright, I helped them find this land two years back.” Said Kyle,

“Hey, guys you’ve made it!” Said Max;

I also notice my brother and Ashley around the fire. We make our way to the fire where everyone is singing and dancing around the fire. We get greeted by my brother’s friends and them talking about how this explained why my brother was dumb while I was smart. I laughed and so did Kyle. I talked to Ashley, while Kyle talked with Austin and his friends. Kyle looked uncomfortable, but Austin made sure he still had a good time. It felt like we were back at the town center. I also noticed Ashley and Max flirting with each other, honestly, I’m happy for her. She always wanted a fairytale prince.

After a few hours, most of the workers went back to rest for the night, while Kyle, Austin, Ashley, Damien, and I spent a while longer there. We just talked about our day and I told them about what happened during dinner,

“WHAT?! You yelled at the king?” said Ashley shocked,

“I know, I messed up. But mainly, I’m sorry Kyle I messed up.” I said with my head down in embarrassment.

“It’s alright, it’ll pass,” Kyle said softly.

“Well if next time, they throw hands, tell me and we’ll back you up,” she said,

“Alright, I will,” I said laughing.

“Well, I’m headed back. I’m drained.” Said Ashley yawning.

“I should head back to, my mother might check on me soon,” said Kyle.

“I’ll take you back,” said Austin

“T-thanks,” said Kyle.

They walk onto the trail back to the castle leaving me and Damien to ourselves. Damien got up and said, “There’s something I want to show you.” 

I speculated, but then said, “Lead the way,” While hooking arms together.

Kyle P.O.V

We walked back around half the trail when Ashley yelled, “Oh god, I forgot my herbs, you guys go ahead, I’ll meet you guys there!” She said running back to the camp.

It just left Austin and me. The walk back was silent for the most part, but then Austin said awkwardly, “So, did you enjoy the party?”

“Yeah! It was fun to hang out with the blacksmiths again, they don’t treat me like a royal.” I said happily.

“I take it that you don’t like your formalities,” Austin said chuckling,

“Not really. In my mind, you should address people who are powerful and skillful with formalities. I’m not much of that.” I said belittely.

All of a sudden, Austin walks in front of me, goes close to my face, and says, “So, does that mean I can call you by your name?” He said cheekily. 

“O-of course n-not,” I said embarrassed.

He laughs and I just kept punching him to make him stop. He just found it more amusing. He then asks me, “Can I see what’s under your mask?” I froze on the spot. I let some seconds go by before saying,

“Y-you’ll laugh a-at me…” I said shyly.

“I promise I won't. Cross my heart.” He said.

“O-ok,” I said as he took off my mask. He looks at me for a long time, but then cups my face in his hand and says, “Why would I laugh at something so beautiful.” He said smiling. 

All of a sudden, I get pain throughout my body. I scream in agony, while Austin tries to hold me. I get flashes of the past of me and that boy, how he always complimented me, protected me, and how he called me his little elf. In the last flash, I see the boy saying,

“Well, My name is Austin, It’s nice to meet you!” He said smiling. Then I wake up gasping.

“Kyle are you ok?! Do you need to go to the doctor?” He said touch my forehead.

I remember everything lay there confused and shocked, was this Austin the Austin from my past?! I quickly got up and said, “Your friend who moved, what was his name?!” I asked in a hurry.

“Well, I can’t remember that far back, but I do remember calling him an elf, a little elf since he was shorter than me.” He said looking at me. I started to tear up and he asked me, “What happened Prince, are you having pain again?” 

“Don’t you mean little elf…” I said crying.

It took him a second to understand and he then said softly, “y-you're him?” 

“I guess we meet again…” I said crying joyfully.

He suddenly grabs me and kisses me. I felt happiness for the first time in a long time. We parted and he said, “I-it’s really y-you,” I said crying.

He kisses my forehead and says, “It’s ok, I’ll never leave you again.” He hugs me tightly and I hug him back. Even those tears falling off ours faces made us feel connected, I hope I never lose it.

Maze P.O.V

Damien takes me up a tree next to the campsite, he helps me up and then takes me to the top with my eyes closed.

“Can I open them now?” I said excitedly,

“Now.” He said. I uncover my eyes to see the stars covering the night sky. It felt like I was in the middle of space and I could touch them.

“Are you ok? You're making an uglier face than usual.” He said jokingly,

I shove him and he almost falls off.

“I’m fine. It’s just I’ve never seen the sky this clear before.” I said in awe.

“Not even in the village?” He asked,

“Not even in the village," I said in awe,

"Why did you take me here?” I asked him.

He took a sigh and said, “On one patrol turn of mine, Max went ahead to check the perimeter and I heard a noise that came from the tree, so I checked it out, but nothing was there. Instead, a view of a million lights filling the sky.” He said looking up.

“Did you tell Max about it?” I asked him.

“Nah, I kept it a secret to myself. I consider this my escape from my status,” he said.

“So am I special or something?” I said chuckling.

He leaned close to me and said, “And If you were?~” in a flirty way.

“I would feel honored,” I said

He started to slowly move in, was he gonna kiss me?
