TITLE Chapter 13: Safe House EPISODE CONTENT The penthouse didn’t feel real. Floor-to-ceiling windows. City lights below. No assistants. No board. No cameras. Just Evan, me, and the hum of the fridge. He hadn’t stopped pacing since we got here. “Stop,” I finally said. “You’re going to wear a hole in the marble.” He stopped. Looked at me like he’d forgotten I was there. “Sorry. Habit.” We ordered food. We ate in silence. It wasn’t awkward. It was… safe. For the first time in weeks, I wasn’t looking over my shoulder. At 11pm, his phone rang. Unknown number. He answered on speaker. “Mr. Cross? Detective Carter.” Evan went still. “What is it?” “We picked up the guy from the video. He’s talking.” My breath caught. “Who paid him?” Evan asked, voice low. Carter hesitated. “He gave us a name. But you’re not gonna like it.” “Try me.” “Victoria didn’t hire him directly. It was routed through Cross Enterprises payroll. Someone inside signed off.” The room went cold. “Send me the file,” Evan said. “Already did. And Ms.—” Carter paused. “You two need to stay put. We think whoever did this knows you have the video.” The call ended. Evan’s jaw was tight. He looked at me. “You should sleep.” “I can’t. Not with—” His phone buzzed again. This time, it was my phone. Unknown number. `Nice safe house. Shame if something happened to it. -V` Evan saw it. He pulled me behind him, walked to the window, and pulled the curtains shut. “We need to leave,” he said. “Now?” “Now.” Then the lights went out.
