Night had fallen completely over Kingsley Manor.
Golden lights illuminated the sprawling estate, making it look more like a palace than a family home. Luxury cars lined the circular driveway as elegantly dressed guests walked across the red carpet, greeted by photographers and reporters.
To everyone else, it was the social event of the year.
To Isabella, it was the place where her life had been stolen.
She sat silently in Damian's SUV, staring at the mansion through the windshield.
"I lived there," she whispered.
Damian fastened the last button of his tuxedo and glanced at her.
"You did."
"It feels familiar..."
"But I can't remember."
"You don't have to remember everything tonight," he replied gently. "You only have to survive."
Isabella looked down at the midnight-blue gown folded neatly across her lap.
"What if someone recognizes me?"
Damian gave a faint smile.
"I'm counting on it."
She looked at him in surprise.
"You want them to see me?"
"Not everyone."
He reached into the glove compartment and removed a small velvet box.
Inside lay a pair of diamond earrings.
"They belonged to your mother."
Isabella stared at them.
"How do you have these?"
"They were mailed to me with the anonymous letter."
Her eyes widened.
"The same person who told you to protect me?"
Damian nodded.
"There was no name."
"Only one sentence."
"She'll know these when the time comes."
Slowly, Isabella picked up the earrings.
The moment her fingers touched them, a faint memory flashed through her mind.
A woman laughing.
A little girl twirling in front of a mirror.
Someone fastening the earrings while saying,
"One day they'll be yours."
The vision disappeared as quickly as it had come.
A tear escaped Isabella's eye.
"I remember her voice..."
"But not her face."
Damian watched her quietly.
"Your memories are coming back."
"Slowly."
"They're enough."
She took a deep breath and put on the earrings.
For the first time since climbing out of her grave, she no longer looked like a victim.
She looked like the woman who had come back to reclaim her life.
---
Inside the ballroom, crystal chandeliers sparkled overhead.
A string quartet played softly while waiters moved through the crowd carrying silver trays of champagne.
Alexander Kingsley stood near the grand staircase, greeting business partners and politicians with his usual charm.
Beside him stood the woman wearing Isabella's face.
She smiled effortlessly.
No one questioned her.
No one suspected the truth.
Across the room, six-year-old Emily sat quietly at a table, absentmindedly stirring the dessert in front of her.
She wasn't listening to the speeches.
She wasn't interested in the celebration.
She kept looking toward the entrance.
As though she were waiting for someone.
---
Outside, Damian handed Isabella an invitation card.
"Where did you get this?"
"I have my ways."
She smiled for the first time that day.
"You really do plan everything."
"I try."
Together they walked toward the mansion.
The security guards checked the invitation.
Neither of them showed the slightest sign of suspicion.
"Welcome to Kingsley Manor."
The massive doors opened.
Warm music drifted into the night.
The moment Isabella stepped inside, a strange feeling washed over her.
She had been here before.
She knew the marble floor.
The sweeping staircase.
The scent of fresh roses filling the entrance hall.
Fragments of memories flashed through her mind.
Emily laughing as she slid down the staircase railing.
Alexander kissing her forehead before leaving for work.
A birthday party.
A family photograph.
Then—
Pain.
Sharp.
Sudden.
She grabbed Damian's arm.
"You alright?"
She nodded.
"I remembered something."
"What?"
"Our daughter."
Damian smiled gently.
"That's progress."
---
They blended into the crowd.
No one paid them much attention.
For now.
Isabella's eyes searched every corner of the ballroom.
She wasn't looking for Alexander.
She wasn't looking for the woman who had stolen her place.
She was looking for Emily.
Then she saw her.
The little girl sat alone near one of the windows, hugging the same white teddy bear Isabella remembered from the funeral.
Emily looked... lonely.
Without thinking, Isabella started walking toward her.
Damian caught her wrist.
"Wait."
"What?"
"Not yet."
"But she's my daughter."
"I know."
"If you rush this, they'll separate you before she even knows who you are."
Isabella forced herself to stop.
It took every ounce of self-control she had.
At that moment, Emily looked up.
Her eyes met Isabella's across the crowded ballroom.
The little girl frowned.
She tilted her head slightly.
As though trying to remember something.
Then, without warning, she stood.
Ignoring everyone around her, Emily began walking straight toward Isabella.
Each step made Isabella's heart beat faster.
Ten steps.
Eight.
Five.
Three.
Emily stopped directly in front of her.
For several long seconds, neither of them spoke.
The ballroom seemed to disappear.
Emily looked into Isabella's eyes.
Then, in a tiny trembling voice, she asked,
"...Mommy?"
Isabella felt tears fill her eyes.
She knelt until they were face to face.
"Emily..."
Before she could say another word, a sharp voice cut through the ballroom.
"Emily!"
The little girl turned.
The impostor hurried toward them, her elegant smile gone.
She reached Emily first and pulled her protectively behind her.
"I'm so sorry," she told Isabella politely.
"My daughter sometimes mistakes strangers for people she misses."
Isabella slowly stood.
Their eyes met.
For the first time...
The two women who shared the same face stood only inches apart.
The impostor smiled.
But there was no warmth in it.
Only warning.
She leaned closer and whispered so quietly that only Isabella could hear.
"I wondered how long it would take you to crawl out of your grave."
Isabella's blood ran cold.
She knew.
She had known all along.
Before Isabella could respond, Alexander walked over.
His gaze shifted between the two identical women.
His expression remained unreadable.
For a long, tense moment...
No one spoke.
Then Alexander looked directly at Isabella and calmly said,
"I don't believe we've met."
