Prologue
The Funeral Rain fell in relentless sheets, drumming against polished black umbrellas and turning the cemetery paths into rivers of mud. No one spoke above a whisper. The only sounds were the distant rumble of thunder, the steady sobs of mourners, and the rhythmic scrape of shovels cutting into wet earth. A black hearse stood beside an open grave. Its rear door slowly opened. Four pallbearers stepped forward, carrying an elegant mahogany coffin adorned with white lilies. Gold handles gleamed beneath the gray afternoon sky. The name engraved on the silver plaque caught the light. ISABELLA HART KINGSLEY 1997 – 2025 Beloved Wife. Devoted Mother. Gone Too Soon. At the front of the mourners stood Alexander Kingsley. Tall. Impeccably dressed. His tailored black suit was untouched by the rain, as though even the storm refused to come near him. He wore the expression of a grieving husband, but his eyes were unreadable. Cold. Controlled. Empty. Beside him stood a little girl in a black dress. Emily. Only six years old. She clutched a white teddy bear against her chest, her tiny fingers trembling. "Daddy..." she whispered, tugging gently on Alexander's sleeve. "Is Mommy really gone?" Alexander knelt beside her. His face softened as he brushed a damp curl away from her forehead. "Mommy is sleeping now." Emily looked toward the coffin. "Can she hear us?" Alexander hesitated for the briefest moment. "No." The little girl lowered her head. "I wanted to tell her I love her." The words broke the silence like shattered glass. Several mourners quietly wiped away tears. Near the back of the crowd stood a woman hidden beneath a large black umbrella. No one seemed to know her. She never looked at the priest. She never looked at the grave. Her eyes never left Alexander. A faint smile curved across her lips. It wasn't the smile of someone grieving. It was the smile of someone who had won. ... The priest opened his Bible. "We gather here today to remember Isabella Hart Kingsley..." His voice faded beneath another clap of thunder. Rain struck the coffin lid. Tap. Tap. Tap. Deep beneath the polished wood... Darkness. Silence. Then— A slow breath. Inside the coffin... Isabella opened her eyes. Confusion swept through her mind. It was completely dark. She couldn't move. The air was hot. Heavy. Her heartbeat thundered inside her chest. She lifted one hand. Her fingertips struck polished wood only inches above her face. She frowned. Why couldn't she sit up? Why couldn't she see? Her breathing quickened. "Hello?" Her voice came back to her, muffled. She pushed harder against the lid. It didn't move. Her chest tightened. "No..." Her hands searched wildly around her. Smooth satin. Soft fabric. Flowers. A tiny cross resting beside her folded hands. Her pulse stopped. "No..." She struck the lid. Hard. Bang! The sound barely escaped the coffin. Outside... No one reacted. The priest continued speaking. "...Ashes to ashes. Dust to dust." Inside... Isabella hit the lid again. Bang! Bang! Bang! Panic exploded through her. "I'm here!" Her scream bounced off the wooden walls. "Help me!" Fresh air. She needed air. Her breaths became shorter. Faster. Her lungs burned. Outside, the pallbearers carefully lowered the coffin toward the grave. The ropes creaked under its weight. The coffin descended. One foot. Two feet. Three. Inside... Isabella felt herself moving. Tilting. Lowering. Terror flooded every part of her body. "No!" She kicked. She clawed. She screamed until her throat burned raw. "I'm alive!" No one heard. The priest closed his Bible. "We now commit her body to the earth." A shovel scooped the first mound of wet soil. It landed on the coffin. Thud. Isabella froze. Another. Thud. Then another. Thud. The sound was unmistakable. Earth. They were burying her. Alive. Her heartbeat became frantic. She pounded both fists against the lid with every ounce of strength she had left. "Please!" "Somebody!" "I'm alive!" Outside... Emily suddenly looked toward the grave. She frowned. "Daddy..." Alexander turned to her. "What is it?" "I thought I heard Mommy." His jaw tightened. "You imagined it." "But—" He gently lifted her into his arms. "Come on." Without another glance toward the grave, he carried his daughter away. The mysterious woman watched them leave. Then she looked down at the freshly covered grave. A satisfied smile spread across her face. "Goodbye, Isabella," she whispered. She turned and disappeared into the rain. Deep underground... The last traces of air were slipping away. Isabella's arms grew weak. Her vision blurred. Her hands fell to her sides. Tears streamed silently down her face. Is this how it ends? Suddenly... Her fingertips brushed against something hidden beneath the satin lining. A small metal object. She pulled it free. A silver lighter. She didn't know how it had gotten there. She didn't know who had left it. But she knew one thing. It was her only chance. With trembling hands, Isabella flicked the wheel. A tiny flame burst to life. Its faint glow revealed the inside of the coffin. Pinned to the lid above her face was a folded piece of paper. She stared at it in disbelief. Someone had left her a message. Her hands shook as she unfolded it. Only seven words were written in neat black ink. Don't trust your husband. Run before they find you. The flame flickered violently. Then... It went out. Darkness swallowed her once again.
