Chapter Nine The Truth Behind the Smile Alexander's words lingered in the air. "I don't believe we've met." For a heartbeat, the ballroom fell away. The music. The laughter. The clinking of crystal glasses. Everything disappeared. All Isabella could see was the man she had once loved standing before her, looking into her eyes as though she were a complete stranger. Her heart sank. How could someone forget a wife? The woman who had shared his life. The mother of his child. Unless... He hadn't forgotten her at all. The woman beside Alexander slipped her arm through his and smiled politely. "I'm sorry," she said. "Emily has been emotional lately. She misses her mother very much." Isabella's hands clenched into fists. "Her mother?" The words felt like knives. Emily looked uncertain. Her little eyes moved from Isabella to the woman beside Alexander. Something wasn't right. Children noticed things adults often ignored. She took one hesitant step toward Isabella. The impostor immediately rested a gentle hand on the girl's shoulder. "Come here, sweetheart." Emily obeyed, but not before glancing back at Isabella one last time. There was confusion in her eyes. As if she recognized something she couldn't explain. Damian sensed Isabella's emotions spiraling out of control. Without drawing attention, he leaned close. "Not here." "We need to leave." "I can't," Isabella whispered. "My daughter is right there." "And if you expose yourself now, you'll never see her again." She looked at him. His expression was calm, but his eyes carried urgency. Reluctantly, she nodded. Together, they melted back into the crowd. Alexander watched them leave. For the briefest moment... His polite smile disappeared. His jaw tightened. The woman beside him noticed. "You know her," she whispered. Alexander picked up a glass of champagne. "I know everyone at my events." "Don't lie to me." He looked at her. "I said we'll deal with this later." His voice was low. Controlled. But it carried a warning. The impostor smiled again before turning toward another group of guests. Anyone watching would have thought they were the perfect couple. No one saw the fear hidden behind her smile. Meanwhile... Damian led Isabella onto one of the mansion's quiet balconies overlooking the gardens. Cold evening air greeted them. She wrapped her arms around herself. "I don't understand." "He looked at me." "For a second... I know he recognized me." Damian rested his hands on the stone railing. "Maybe." "Maybe?" "He could be pretending." "Or..." "He could genuinely believe you're dead." Isabella frowned. "How?" Damian looked toward the brightly lit ballroom. "If someone manipulated the evidence... drugged you... buried you before anyone realized you were alive..." "They could have convinced everyone that your death was real." She closed her eyes. "So either my husband betrayed me..." "...or someone deceived both of us." Neither possibility brought comfort. A soft voice interrupted them. "Excuse me..." They turned. An elderly woman wearing a black uniform stood in the doorway. She carried a silver tray. "I'm sorry to interrupt." "But..." She stared at Isabella. The tray slipped from her trembling hands. Plates crashed onto the marble floor. Tears instantly filled the old woman's eyes. "Mrs. Kingsley..." Isabella froze. "You know me?" The woman slowly covered her mouth. "It really is you..." Before Isabella could say another word, the woman suddenly looked terrified. She glanced over her shoulder toward the ballroom. Then hurried closer. "You shouldn't be here." "They'll kill you." Damian stepped forward. "Who will?" The woman shook her head. "I've already said too much." She reached into her apron and secretly pressed a folded piece of paper into Isabella's hand. "Go to the nursery." "Tonight." "Before midnight." Without another word, she hurried away. Disappearing into the crowd. Isabella unfolded the note. Three words were written inside. She remembers you. Her breath caught. "Emily..." Damian nodded slowly. "If that's true..." "She may be the key to everything." At the far end of the ballroom, the impostor watched them from behind a marble pillar. Her pleasant smile had vanished completely. She quietly picked up her phone and typed a single message. She's here. She spoke to Martha. Almost immediately, a reply appeared. Then Martha knows too much. The impostor read the message twice. Her face turned pale. "No..." she whispered. But another message arrived before she could react. Take care of it. Tonight. She slowly lowered the phone. Across the room, the elderly housekeeper smiled warmly at Emily as she adjusted the little girl's dress. The woman had served the Kingsley family for more than thirty years. She had watched Emily grow up. She had loved Isabella like a daughter. And now... Someone had just signed her death warrant. Unaware of the danger, Martha climbed the grand staircase toward the nursery. She looked around carefully before opening the door. Inside, the room remained exactly as Isabella had left it. The rocking chair. The shelves of children's books. The faded stuffed rabbit on the bed. Martha smiled sadly. "I prayed you'd come home." She wiped away a tear. Then she heard footsteps behind her. She turned, expecting to see Isabella. Instead... A tall man dressed entirely in black stood silently in the doorway. His face was hidden beneath a mask. Martha's smile disappeared. "You..." The man slowly closed the nursery door. "I was told you remembered too much." Martha stepped backward. "You'll never get away with this." The masked man tilted his head. "We already have." Downstairs... The orchestra began playing a slow waltz. Guests applauded. No one heard Martha's frightened scream.
