Chapter Three: The Chase

1022 Words
The black SUVs closed in. Rain lashed against the windshield, blurring the road into streaks of white and gray. Damian tightened his grip on the steering wheel, his sharp eyes flicking between the highway ahead and the rearview mirror. "They're gaining on us," Isabella whispered. Her heart pounded so violently that she could hear it over the roar of the engine. Damian didn't answer immediately. He pressed harder on the accelerator. The SUV surged forward. The speedometer climbed. One hundred kilometers. One hundred and twenty. One hundred and forty. The city lights rushed past in a blur. Behind them, the two black SUVs matched every move. Whoever was chasing them wasn't planning to let them escape. "They've done this before," Damian muttered. "What?" "They're trained." Isabella turned to look through the rear window. The lead SUV pulled into the next lane. Its headlights flashed twice. The second SUV moved to the opposite side. "They're trying to box us in," Damian said calmly. A chill raced through Isabella's body. "Who are they?" "I wish I knew." "You don't know?" "I know they're dangerous." That wasn't enough. Nothing about tonight made sense. She had awakened inside a coffin. Escaped her own grave. Found a stranger who somehow knew her name. And now armed men were chasing them through the middle of the night. None of it felt real. A loud bang shattered her thoughts. The SUV jolted. "What was that?" Damian's jaw tightened. "They hit the rear tire." The steering wheel vibrated beneath his hands. Another bang echoed across the highway. This time the back window exploded. Glass rained into the car. Isabella screamed and ducked. A bullet tore through the empty space where her head had been only seconds earlier. "They're shooting!" "Stay down!" Damian swerved sharply. The SUV narrowly avoided crashing into a guardrail before cutting across two lanes of traffic. Car horns blared. Drivers slammed on their brakes. Rainwater sprayed into the air. One of the black SUVs clipped another vehicle. Metal scraped against metal. The smaller car spun across the road before crashing into the center barrier. Isabella covered her mouth. "Oh my God..." "They don't care who gets hurt," Damian said. His voice was steady. Too steady. Almost as if he had lived through moments like this before. She looked at him. "Who are you really?" For a brief moment, his eyes met hers. "I'm the only reason you're still alive." The words hung between them. Before she could respond, Damian jerked the steering wheel to the right. The SUV left the highway. Its tires bounced onto a narrow service road surrounded by thick forest. Dark trees swallowed them. Only the headlights pierced the darkness. Branches slapped against the sides of the vehicle. The road became rough. Mud splashed beneath the tires. The SUVs behind followed without hesitation. "They're still coming," Isabella said. "I know." "Do you have a plan?" Damian smiled faintly. "I always have a plan." She wasn't sure whether that comforted her or frightened her. The road twisted sharply. Damian killed the headlights. Everything disappeared into darkness. "What are you doing?" Isabella gasped. "If they can't see us..." He slowed the vehicle and turned abruptly onto what looked like an abandoned logging path. The SUV rolled silently beneath towering trees. Only the sound of rain remained. The black SUVs sped past the hidden path without noticing. Their headlights disappeared into the distance. Silence returned. Neither of them moved. Neither of them breathed. Thirty seconds passed. Then a minute. Finally, Damian exhaled. "For now..." "We lost them." Isabella leaned back against the seat. Her body trembled uncontrollably. She hadn't realized how frightened she truly was until the danger had passed. Or perhaps... Until she believed it had. Damian switched the headlights back on. Instead of returning to the road, he continued deeper into the forest. "Where are we going?" Isabella asked. "Somewhere safe." "Can I trust you?" He didn't answer immediately. Finally, he spoke. "No." She stared at him. "You shouldn't trust anyone." His words reminded her of the note inside the coffin. Don't trust your husband. Now Damian himself was telling her not to trust anyone. Then why had the photograph said to trust him? Questions piled upon questions. None had answers. Twenty minutes later, the trees began to thin. A lonely cabin appeared beside a small lake. It looked old. Forgotten. The windows were dark. The wooden porch sagged with age. Damian stopped the SUV. "We're here." Isabella looked around nervously. "This place is abandoned." "Exactly." He stepped out into the rain. After a moment's hesitation, Isabella followed. The cold night air stung her face. She wrapped her muddy burial dress tightly around herself. Damian unlocked the cabin door with a small key hidden beneath one of the porch steps. "You've been here before," she observed. "A few times." The door creaked open. Inside, the cabin was simple but clean. A fireplace. An old leather sofa. A wooden table. Shelves lined with books. Someone had been maintaining the place. Damian lit a lantern. A warm golden glow filled the room. For the first time since escaping the grave... Isabella felt something she hadn't expected. Safe. But safety, she was beginning to learn, could be an illusion. Damian disappeared into another room before returning with a blanket and a first-aid kit. "Sit." She obeyed. As he cleaned the cuts on her hands, neither of them spoke. The silence wasn't uncomfortable. It was cautious. Finally, Isabella broke it. "Tell me the truth." Damian looked up. "Why were you waiting for me at the cemetery?" He hesitated. Then he quietly replied, "Because someone sent me a letter three weeks ago." "A letter?" He nodded. "It had only one sentence." "What did it say?" Damian held her gaze. 'If Isabella Hart ever rises from the grave... protect her with your life.' Isabella felt the blood drain from her face. Someone had known. Someone had expected tonight. But who? And how? Outside... A branch snapped. Damian's expression changed instantly. He blew out the lantern. Darkness swallowed the cabin. Then came the unmistakable sound of footsteps... ...right outside the front door.
