The Beginning
~ Lucy ~
~Thursday~
“OMG Dear Diary I cannot believe the day I just had, Britney cannot get over how boring life is here in the Bay, but seriously life couldn’t be more exciting at the moment, I love working, obviously because I have the perfect few of Elliot unloading the boats...the way the sweat just glistens off those abs..mmm, tasty. Anywayyyyy, I’m pretty sure Menzie caught me staring today, but oh well, she loves me too much to say anything.
And no diary this isn’t the type of girl that I am but damn, he’s hot, crap better go Moms walking around and if she knew about this diary I woul--”
“Hi Mom!” I proclaim awkwardly while sitting on my diary, she’s always had an issue with not knocking on the door.
“Lucy, Menzie called” Oh hell. I was so sure she wouldn’t say anything. “Oh she did?” I ask as casually as possible. “She just wanted me to let you know that she needs you to work on Saturday, that okay?” I breathed a sigh of relief, hopefully not too loudly. “Yeah that’s great” I said.
I go and put my diary away, that was too much of a close call, I keep it under my mattress, if it was ever found I truly think I would die. Don’t get me wrong my parents are lovely, everyone loves them, I love them, Quinn & Paul, our family is a pretty central part to the community here in Diamond Bay, I love it here. I love the slow pace of life, I love the ocean breeze.
Tonight I think I’m just going to go to sleep thinking about those glistening abs, argh why am I being like this? This just isn’t me. But god he’s cute.
~Friday~
So, I’m excited for today. School is always kind of boring, but I have work at the Diner after and that will mean at least catching a glimpse of Elliot.
“Time to get going to school Lucy.” I heard Dad call from downstairs.
I grabbed my bag and ran downstairs, grabbing some juice before I headed out the door and made my way towards Diamond High.
About halfway there my best friend Britney always meets up with me like she does every day.
“Hey.” She says casually.
“Hey.” I reply.
“I’m so sick of this town.” She almost spits the words out.
“What's happened this time?” I ask.
“It’s everything” She says. “Menzie is becoming unbearable, I can never do ANYTHING without her bitching about it, she gets annoyed if I hang out with Jasmi-”
“You’re hanging out with HER?” I interrupted.
See Britney has been my best friend for as long as I can remember, we’ve always been well behaved and had our heads screwed on well, but lately, she’s seemed over the Bay and just a bit..off. If she’s hanging around with Jasmine Growler that explains it, see Jasmine has always been to big and loud for the Bay, I believe she has literally slept with everyone that lives here. Oh my god. I hadn’t thought about that before, does that mean she’s slept with Elliot? Surely not, if she has then I stand no chance of him looking at me, she has the body of the goddess, even if she is as heartless as a rock, her body is something every girl here envies.
“Why wouldn’t I hang out with Jasmine?” Britney replies angrily, snapping me out of my panic.
“Because she’s never wanted anything to do with us before and is a plague on society!” I practically yell back at her.
“Well someone’s jealous aren’t they?” She replied with a smirk on her face.
“It’s not that, it’s not!” I insist.
“Then get over yourself. I’m allowed other friends Lucy.”
“Fine.”
We walked the rest of the way to school in silence, our first real fight in a long time.
We got to school just before the bell went off, then we went our separate ways, without our normal morning hug, most of our classes are different so we didn’t see each other until lunch most days, but today at lunch we just sat across from our table, I decided to try and break the silence. “I’m sorry about earlier” I started. “Don’t worry about it.” She snapped back.
“I just want us to go back to being okay, please Brit.”
“It’s okay Lucy, I was just upset, Menzie has been on my case all week, I get that she’s been great taking me in and everything but she really has been unbearable this week, she keeps saying she wishes I was like you.
“Oh Britney, I’m sorry, I can try talking to her when I’m working later if you want?”
“Don’t bother nothing will change her mind at this point.” She stated matter of factly.
At that point the bell went off and we headed back to our classes.
The rest of the day went by quickly, after school got out I started walking towards the diner, Britney has always just headed straight home so on the days I have work we don’t see each other after school gets out, when I arrived at the diner I could see Menzie had just been on the phone, she was clearly unhappy. Menzie was like the glue of Diamond Bay, she was like a mother to everyone, but she had actually taken Britney in a few years back when she needed somewhere to stay and she’s pretty much been there for her ever since.
She owns the diner and also has her house set up as a Bed and Breakfast for anyone thats staying here, she truly is lovely. I can’t believe how Britney was talking about her today, I know they have their little differences sometimes but Menzie is the loveliest person I could imagine.
I went up and gave her a hug and asked if she was okay, she faked a smile, “Everything is just peachy Dearie.” I could tell she was lying, but she clearly didn’t want to talk about it, so i wasn’t going to push it.
I went about my job, mostly serving and clearing tables, I was taking an order for an elderly couple when I seen him, right there, I’d always loved the view from the diner, just seeing the boats, this was the heart of the Bay, people unloading and loading boats.
Fishing was out prime industry here, it kept us away from needing to become a tourist trap, it was nice, new faces would show for a few days and then be gone, never really interfering with our life too much. Our beaches are amazing, the beautiful white sand, it’s all been a dream, growing up here has been a dream, I couldn’t imagine being anywhere else in the world.
But lately the view has seriously improved, ever since Elliot started working at the Wharfe, just seeing him makes my heart race, he’s always been around, but he was always a few years older than me. He went away to college in Jengula but he dropped out and came back a few weeks ago, he probably doesn’t even know I exist, but I know he exists, and when the summer sun is shining and he pulls off his shirt, I could just die, his perfectly sculpted body, I’ve never been like this before, but, no one has ever been him before either.
“Are you even listening girl?!” The elder man snaps me out of my daydream,
“S-s-sorry Sir.” I stutter, feeling myself blushing.
I jot down their order and take it over to the counter and give it to Menzie.
“Why don’t you take a break and get your head back on straight.” She says to me kindly.
“Okay, I’m sorry about that.” I reply.
I take off my apron and go sit out the back of the diner and just try to breathe, I’m sitting out there for 5 minutes when I hear his voice, He’s in the diner. He’s ordering something to take away. If I had been in there right now we would be talking. Well, he would be talking, I’d probably be making a fool of myself. I wish I wasn’t so awkward. Oh well, I heard him leave in another 5 minutes, I decided it should be safe to go back in.
I finished out my shift without anymore incidents, Elliot must’ve finished his shift at the wharf because I didn’t see him for the rest of the day.
Menzie called me over just as we were closing up for the day, “Do you want to come back to my place for dinner sweetie?” She asked. “Of course!” I replied, I loved being at Menzies, and I thought a chance to clear the air with Britney would be good.
I helped her count up the till and then got in her car and drove to her house.
We went inside and Menzie started preparing dinner for the 3 of us, “Go up and see Britney, let her know dinner will be ready in 20 minutes.” She said, I nodded and went upstairs to Britney’s room, I knocked on her door and went in as was our custom, but she wasn’t there.
I headed back downstairs, “Is everything okay?” Menzie asked.
“Yeah” I replied “Britney just isn’t in her room.”
Menzie reached for her phone, and called Britney, I could tell she looked annoyed as the phone went through to voicemail, “Where are you young lady? Lucy and I are waiting for you, call me back.” She put the phone down and looked like she was about to burst into tears.
I walked over and gave her a hug. “Are you sure everything is okay Menzie?”
She looked at me with tears in her eyes, “I think I’m losing her.”
We just stayed hugging for a good 5 minutes, then she went back to preparing dinner, when I felt my phone buzzing, it was Britney, “Where are you?” I answered.
“Just studying, tell Menzie I’ll be home in an hour.” She hung up before I could reply, I told Menzie what she had said, and sure enough an hour later when we were clearing the table up Britney walked in. She went straight up to her room ignoring Menzie. Menzie looked like she’d been stabbed, I mouthed “I’m sorry.” and she just smiled at me.
I followed Britney up to her room. “How was...studying?” I asked.
“I was studying.” She insisted.
“Why didn’t you just tell Menzie?” I asked.
“Because I’m sick of her being all up in my business, she’s not my mother.”
“Stop, she knows she isn’t your Mom but she’s worried about losing you, she’s done so much for you, Brit just talk to me what’s really going on?”
“Nothing. Everything.” She burst into tears.
I wrapped my arms around her and just held her while she cried.
“I’m so sick of being invisible” She stammered through tears. “And whenever I try to do anything Menzie has an issue with it.”
I didn’t know what to say, we’d never been popular, but we were always happy it just being the two of us, weren’t we? Why does she have this sudden need for more? Was I not enough?
I looked at the time. “I better get home.” I said, we hugged and I went downstairs and thanked Menzie for dinner, then I walked home and went up to bed.
