Chapter 2

Felicia's POV I knew that was Sophia's voice, but what I wasn't sure of was whether she was with my mate. My plan felt shaky as I tried to hear the male's voice. "Do you think we should tell her?" James finally said out loud. I was dumbstruck. What the hell was going on? Sophia would not do that to me; we have been best friends, and she knew James was my mate. I pushed the door open, and both of them froze. My face contorted into anger as I stared at both my best friends in bed. "Why?" I asked, staring at Sophia, who didn't seem apologetic. "I don't want you as a mate, Felicia. I never did. I am more charismatic and better than you. Therefore I want a lady that fits that description." James said with a sly smile and kissed Sophia again. "And you? Have you coveted my mate all along? All this while you have encouraged me; was this what you had in mind?" I asked as my voice became cracky. I clung to the nylon containing the money for my brother's medical bills. "You should get out of here. Don't you have a place to be? I heard your parents were dead in a car accident." Sophia said without human feelings. "And your crippled brother, how are you going to survive with all of that? Poor Felicia." She said with a funny look on her face that wanted to make me smack her on the face. Without saying a word, I walked out. My mind is fixed on getting my brother out of the hospital. The doctor called again, and I immediately picked up the call, telling him I was on my way. My mind felt heavy as I walked, and each time I replayed what I had seen. "How did Sophia know my brother was now a cripple? I didn't say anything to her." I forgot that, and on getting to the hospital, I cleared all the medical bills. "You can now go home. Your brother will be discharged today." Doctor Lawson said with a smile etched on his face. "You are a fighter, Felicia. You definitely will survive this." He patted me on the back. Daniel looked at me and burst into tears. I rushed towards him and hugged him tight. "Don't worry, we have each other now." I sobbed gently. But little did we know we were entering another new world. My father's uncle sold the house and all of my father's property and left us to fend for ourselves. The police later came to visit, and one of them told me my parents had been unjustly killed and it was still under investigation. It has now been three months now, and there was no report about it. I slowly forgot about it all as I hopped from one minimal work to another. I got home feeling tired when I saw the look on Daniel's face. The house was not big but well arranged to suit us two. "Madam Theresa was here today. She is asking for the house rent." Daniel said with his head bowed to the ground. I smiled. "Well, we are in luck because I was just paid today." Daniel's face beamed with a smile. "That means we can eat proper food today." I nodded and walked closer to him, "Let mine sort the bills out. I will be back." I walked out to the next door and knocked gently. My heart raced because we were now owing Madam Theresa for five months rent, and I was only having two with me. The door opens to reveal the stern gaze of a woman in her late sixties. "So, have you come to pay my money?" She asked with her hand akimbo. "Madam Theresa, I have just two months with me. Can you give me some more time?" I said, falling to my knees. "More what? You are nothing but a disgrace; you keep begging me each time, and now this." Madam Theresa shouted at me and snatched the money I was holding. "Ma, please. That is the money meant for me to feed my brother. We won't survive the month if you decide to collect everything from me." I said with tears, but the woman in front of me doesn't care. She crackled with laughter as she counted the money in her hands. "Well, it seems you have paid your dues. You have one more month to balance me, and I want to have it by tomorrow." Madam Theresa said again. "Tomorrow, but I just drop all the money with me." I said with anger as I clenched my fist. "And do you think I care? All your mates are out there using what they have to get what they want. Why can't you do the same? Get my money, or you are leaving that house tomorrow." Madam Theresa shouted and slammed the door in my face despite my pleas. I walked back into the house with a smile. I wasn't going to let Daniel see how depressed I was. "We are now free of her threat." I said with a smile, and Daniel nodded. "I got admitted." Daniel said with a wide grin. "You mean you got into the university?" I said in awe as I looked at him. "Yes, Felicia. I just got the mail today." Daniel replied. The room was thick with tension as we both knew it was going to cost us a lot of money, but I was ready to send him to school even though I wasn't able to go. Daniel was brilliant, and unlike me, he deserves to be out there. "We can just forget about it. I know you are trying a lot, but I can always get another admission." He said, wheeling himself towards me. "Don't worry, Daniel, you are going to school." I walked out of the apartment and went back to Madame Theresa. My heart beat steadily as I stood at the doorpost. "What do you want?" She asked with a smirk. "I am ready. Is there any job I can take on?" I asked, staring at her face. "Of course there is, child." Madam Theresa smiled. The door closed back, and when she came out, she handed me a card. "That is your ticket to wealth. Make him feel good, and of course I am taking my own share." I looked at the card and back at her face, not sure what I was supposed to do when I got to the place.
