INEVITABLE

Some legacies are inherited. Others are impossible to escape.

For eight years, Camila Smith ran from her family, her past, and the darkness she feared she carried within herself.

Born into a powerful family hiding a criminal empire behind its perfect name, Camila was raised to become her father’s successor. But she chose freedom over inheritance, leaving behind everything—including Daniel Morreti, the one man she loved but refused to remain a secret for.

When an attempt on her father’s life brings her home, Camila is forced to confront the world she abandoned, the friendships she shattered, and the man she never truly forgot.

But she’s not the girl who left eight years ago. And Daniel isn’t the only one with something to lose.

Between forbidden love, family rivalries, buried secrets, dangerous ambitions, and a betrayal waiting to surface, Camila will discover that some things cannot be outrun.

Especially destiny.

Prologue
INEVITABLE The first rule of being a Smith? Never let them see you afraid. My father taught me that one. The rest, I thought, I would never need. I was wrong. I stood before the mirror, fastening a diamond necklace around my throat. Downstairs, music drifted through the halls. Champagne sparkled beneath the chandeliers, and laughter filled the rooms of people who had perfected the art of making everything look beautiful. Including themselves. I looked exactly as I was supposed to. Perfect dress. Perfect hair. Perfect smile. A Smith daughter, through and through. Then I noticed the blood on my wrist. I turned on the faucet and watched the water carry it away. I waited for the guilt to follow. It didn’t. No trembling hands. No tears. No desperate attempt to convince myself that I hadn’t done what I’d done. Only silence. I studied my reflection, searching for some visible sign that I had crossed a line I could never uncross. My eyes were the same. My hands were steady. Nothing about the woman staring back at me suggested what she had just done. That should have comforted me. It didn’t. For years, I had questioned my father’s choices, struggling to understand the world he inhabited and the things he carried without ever bringing them to the breakfast table. I loved him. That had never been the question. Understanding him was another matter. I used to believe that whatever he was capable of, I would never be the same. Now, standing alone with the consequences of my own decision, I wondered whether the difference between us had ever been as simple as I’d wanted to believe. Perhaps I had judged what I didn’t understand. Perhaps some choices could only be understood when you were the one forced to make them. I wasn’t suddenly convinced my father had always been right. I simply wasn’t so certain I had understood him. I looked at my reflection again. There was no monster staring back. Just me. That was the unsettling part. I’d spent years believing there were lines I would never cross, versions of myself I would never have to meet. But I had made my choice. And I wasn’t going to pretend I wished I’d made another. I reached for my lipstick and painted my mouth a deep shade of red. Then I straightened my dress, lifted my chin, and practiced the smile everyone trusted. It came naturally. Someone called my name from downstairs. I turned toward the door, carrying my father’s name and a secret of my own. For the first time, I understood that knowing what you are capable of is not the same as knowing who you will become. I stepped into the hallway. The world was waiting for the girl it thought it knew. Let it wait.
