Chapter 1
Chapter 1 The click of my Louboutins echoed through the marble-floored hallway of Zhang & Associates, each step a percussive reminder of the battle ahead. I smoothed down my tailored charcoal suit, feeling the reassuring weight of the files tucked under my arm. Today was the day. The merger that could make or break my career, and I'd be damned if I let that arrogant bastard Derek Hawthorne get the upper hand. I paused at the door to my office, catching a glimpse of my reflection in the polished nameplate: Sophia Chen, Senior Associate. The sight steadied me, a reminder of how far I'd come. First-generation Chinese-American, daughter of immigrant small business owners, now standing toe-to-toe with the titans of New York corporate law. I allowed myself a small, fierce smile before pushing the door open. The familiar scent of leather and lemon polish greeted me as I strode to my desk, dumping my designer tote unceremoniously on the plush carpet. I had exactly forty-seven minutes to review my notes before the preliminary hearing, and I intended to use every second. I was halfway through my third cup of coffee when a knock at the door interrupted my focus. "Come in," I called, not bothering to look up from the sea of documents spread before me. "Sophia." The deep, authoritative voice of Marcus Zhang, founding partner and my mentor, filled the room. "How are we looking for today's hearing?" I lifted my gaze, meeting his eyes with what I hoped was cool confidence. "We're ready, Marcus. I've gone over every angle, every possible argument Hawthorne might throw at us. We've got this." Marcus nodded, his salt-and-pepper hair catching the morning light. "Good. This merger is crucial for our client, and for the firm. We can't afford any slip-ups." He paused, studying me with an intensity that made me want to squirm. "You've faced Hawthorne before. Any concerns?" I swallowed hard, tamping down the surge of emotions that name evoked. Anger. Frustration. And something else I refused to acknowledge. "Nothing I can't handle," I said, injecting steel into my voice. "Derek Hawthorne might have an ivy league pedigree and a family name, but he's never faced an opponent like me." A ghost of a smile flickered across Marcus's face. "That's what I like to hear. Just remember, Sophia, this isn't just about winning. It's about outmaneuvering them at every turn. Show them why Zhang & Associates is the best in the business." "I won't let you down," I promised, meaning every word. As Marcus turned to leave, he paused at the door. "One more thing, Sophia. I know you and Hawthorne have a... history of heated exchanges. Keep it professional in there. We don't need any unnecessary drama." I felt heat rise to my cheeks, remembering the last time Derek and I had squared off in court. The case had devolved into a verbal sparring match that had the judge threatening us both with contempt. "Of course," I said smoothly. "Pure professionalism." Once Marcus left, I allowed myself a moment to slump back in my chair, exhaling slowly. Derek Hawthorne. Just the thought of him made my blood boil. That smug smile, those piercing gray eyes that seemed to look right through you, the way he lounged in his chair like he owned the courtroom. Everything about him screamed old money, entitlement, and an arrogance that made me want to slap that self-satisfied grin right off his chiseled face. I shook my head, banishing thoughts of Derek's face – chiseled or otherwise – from my mind. I had more important things to focus on. Like ensuring that our client, a brilliant AI startup with game-changing technology, didn't get swallowed up and stifled by the tech giant Hawthorne was representing. Gathering my files, I stood and smoothed down my suit one last time. A glance at my watch told me it was time. With a deep breath, I strode out of my office, my game face firmly in place. The elevator ride down to the lobby was a blur of mental preparation, running through key points and potential rebuttals. As the doors slid open, I caught sight of my reflection in the mirrored wall. Dark almond-shaped eyes stared back at me, filled with determination. My long black hair was pulled back in a sleek ponytail, not a strand out of place. I looked every inch the formidable lawyer I'd worked so hard to become. The warm New York spring air hit me as I exited the building, a stark contrast to the air-conditioned chill of the office. I hailed a cab, my mind already in the courtroom as I rattled off the address to the driver. Traffic crawled along at an agonizing pace, each red light feeling like a personal affront. I found myself compulsively checking my watch, my anxiety ratcheting up with each passing minute. The last thing I needed was to be late, giving Derek any ammunition to use against me. Finally, mercifully, we pulled up in front of the courthouse. I practically threw my fare at the driver, bursting out of the cab with my files clutched to my chest. The grand stone steps loomed before me, and I took them two at a time, my heels be damned. I made it through security in record time, power-walking down the long corridor towards the designated courtroom. My heart was pounding, a mix of adrenaline and nerves coursing through my veins. This was it. The moment of truth. As I rounded the corner, I saw him. Derek Hawthorne stood outside the courtroom, leaning against the wall with infuriating casualness. His bespoke suit probably cost more than my monthly rent, hugging his athletic frame in a way that was entirely too distracting. His blonde hair was artfully tousled, like he'd just rolled out of bed looking like a GQ model. Our eyes met, and I saw the corner of his mouth quirk up in that insufferable half-smirk I'd come to loathe. "Cutting it a bit close, aren't we, Chen?" he drawled, his voice a low rumble that sent an involuntary shiver down my spine. I lifted my chin, refusing to let him see how he affected me. "Some of us actually prepare for our cases, Hawthorne. We can't all coast by on daddy's name and connections." His eyes narrowed, a flash of something – anger? hurt? – crossing his face before it was replaced by his usual mask of cool amusement. "Is that what you think? That I don't work for my victories?" He pushed off the wall, taking a step closer. "I've earned every win, sweetheart. Just like I'm going to earn this one." The pet name grated on my nerves, stoking the fire of my anger. "In your dreams," I spat, stepping into his space. We were nearly nose to nose now, the tension between us crackling like electricity. "I'm going to wipe that smug smile off your face when I'm done with you in there." Derek's gaze dropped to my lips for a fraction of a second before snapping back to my eyes. "Is that a promise?" he murmured, his voice husky. Before I could formulate a suitably scathing response, the bailiff's voice rang out. "All parties for the AI merger preliminary hearing, please enter the courtroom." Derek stepped back, gesturing grandly towards the door. "After you, Ms. Chen. Let's see if you can put your money where your mouth is." I straightened my spine, squaring my shoulders as I marched past him into the courtroom. Game on, Hawthorne, I thought. You have no idea what you're in for. As I took my place at the plaintiff's table, I could feel Derek's eyes on me. I refused to give him the satisfaction of looking back, instead focusing on arranging my files with meticulous precision. But even as I prepared to dive into the intricacies of the case, a traitorous part of my mind couldn't help but wonder what it would be like to wipe that smirk off his face in an entirely different way. I shook my head, banishing the thought. There was no room for such distractions. Not now, not ever. Derek Hawthorne was the enemy, and I was going to crush him in court. That was all that mattered. The judge entered, and we all rose. As we sat back down, I caught Derek's eye one last time. The challenge in his gaze was unmistakable, and I felt an answering fire ignite in my chest. Let the games begin.
