Chapter 1 Wishing You Happiness
At Ethan Carter's birthday party, a death notice suddenly blew up the class group chat.
"No way, Faye Robbins is dead?"
"That's gotta be fake. People like her don't die easy. Didn't she screw Ethan over back then…"
At the head of the table, Ethan was on his phone, his eyes dark and unreadable.
"Fake. I just got a call from her this morning. She said she was coming to my party."
Someone hesitated, then raised their phone. "If I'm not mistaken, this is Faye, right? The memorial's at the funeral home in the next city. Should we go check it out?"
It was a photo of a memorial hall. And there I was, lying peacefully in the center.
Ethan's expression flickered. He stood up and strode toward the door, but the moment he pulled it open, he froze.
The "dead" me was standing right there.
I looked into those familiar eyes and smiled. "Ethan, long time no see. I came to wish you a happy birthday."
*****
The private room instantly exploded with insults.
"Faye, are you seriously this pathetic? Faking your own funeral just to get Ethan's attention?"
"When Ethan went bankrupt, you were the first to run. Now that he's back on top, you crawl back like nothing happened?"
"People like you are better off actually dead."
Their words hit like needles, sharp and relentless.
Ethan stood right in front of me, not even trying to stop them.
I clenched my fists and forced a small, ingratiating smile.
"I'm not here to bother Ethan. It's his birthday. I just wanted to say happy birthday. And… I'm sorry."
Ethan let out a cold, mocking laugh. "You really think I need your apology?"
He raised a brow, then pulled Evelyn Wilson, my former best friend, into his arms.
His tone turned teasing. "Evelyn and I are getting married soon. If you've got the time, maybe congratulate us instead."
Ethan grabbed a bottle of red wine, poured a full glass, and held it out to me.
Evelyn leaned shyly against him. "Faye, what Ethan and I really need is your blessing. Please?"
She blinked playfully, lifting their intertwined hands and waving them in front of me.
Maybe this was for the best.
Ethan's star-like eyes hadn't dimmed after I left. He had someone new now. I should be happy for him.
I picked up the glass. "Ethan, wishing you happiness, good health, and lots of success every year."
A sharp pain suddenly shot through my thigh. The red wine spilled from my hand.
"Faye, if you didn't want to bless us, you didn't have to throw wine at me. I mean, you were the one who left Ethan first. It's not like I stole your boyfriend…"
Evelyn's eyes turned red as she sniffled, but under the table, her hand gripped a blood-stained corkscrew.
Ethan's gaze instantly turned icy.
"Ethan, it wasn't me. Evelyn started it first…"
Slap!
Before I could finish, a burning pain exploded across my cheek.
Ethan said, "Faye, who do you think you are? How dare you accuse my fiancée right in front of me? You think I don't know you? You're shallow, money-obsessed, cold-hearted, and you'll do whatever it takes, no matter how dirty. You're vicious and manipulative... Back then you cheated on me with my best friend, Lucas Welch. Evelyn never said a bad word about you. Now that we're getting married, you show up to stir drama again? You're seriously disgusting."
