Meda
Olympia – Mortal Time: 2014
“C’mon, Meda, we’re going to be late!”
“I don’t want to.”
Hali Rae frowned.
“Meda, it’s our first day. We’ll bring more attention if we’re the last to show up.”
“This is so stupid. Remind me why I let you enroll me again?”
“Simple. This way you can finally learn how to control your powers,” she said with a smile.
I gave her a blank stare.
“Why would I want to do that?”
She returned my stare, just as flatly.
“I know it sounds unimportant, but you’ll continue to be a wild card until you do. Let’s call it controlled chaos.”
I scoffed.
“There’s no such thing as ‘controlled chaos,’ Rae.”
“Oh, hush. Now c’mon, I want to see if there are any hot gods attending!”
She linked her arm with mine and pulled me toward the Academi.
My jaw dropped once we arrived.
The Academi… the place where all deities were trained from ages 18 to 26 to take on their eventual roles as Gods and Goddesses. Only once they were fully in control and aware of their duties would they graduate and earn their divine title.
All of the last generation of deities had studied here before assuming their roles—Hades, Hera, Zeus, Ares, Hell, even Eros trained here.
Its grandiose decor and immense number of facilities would be a dream come true for any deity.
Well, any deity except me, I guess.
As I stood in front of the massive building that resembled a colossal colosseum, statues of gods and goddesses perched on each pillar, and a golden staircase gleaming beneath us, I couldn’t help but yearn to be anywhere else.
Maybe I can sneak away before anyone sees me…
“Oh hell no, Meda. I know that face—you’re not going anywhere but inside. You promised,” Rae glared at me.
Dammit all…
I nervously fidgeted with my new ivory toga Psamathe had bought for me as the solid gold doors to the Academi opened.
The sharp clack of high heels against tile made me lift my head.
In the doorway stood two regal bodyguards and a tall, slender woman. Her gray hair was curled, and she wore a sleeveless red toga paired with silver stilettos.
Her face, though aged, was stunning. Thin eyes with smile lines, likely from laughing too much. Her hazel gaze was warm and her aura radiated peace. It was almost soothing.
They, on the other hand, were tall, muscular, and formidable. One had scruffy blond hair; the other, a brunette, had his face marked with tiny scars.
“Hali-Rae of Pharos and Meda of Erebus. Welcome to the Academi. I am Eirene, the goddess of peace and your new Headmistress.
Be swift and follow me before you both miss orientation.”
Her voice was stern, yet melodic. She turned and walked inside.
Rae and I exchanged a look. She raised an eyebrow and smirked, as if to say ‘Peace? Seriously?’
I smirked back, and we followed.
We walked what felt like a labyrinth of corridors for a good twenty minutes, passing endless golden doors and portraits of deities, until we reached the end of a long hallway.
A single wooden door stood before us.
I glanced at Rae, who was winded. She turned to the Headmistress.
“Holy hell, boss lady! I thought we’d never arrive!”
“Careful, Rae. Your laziness is showing…” I rolled my eyes.
She gasped dramatically.
“No way! I thought I covered it before we came. I’m sure I checked…”
She grinned, and we both burst out laughing.
Headmistress Eirene’s face stayed placid until she let out a sigh.
“Something tells me you two will be in my office all term…”
Rae and I shared a look.
Knowing us, we’d probably be there by this evening…
I smiled politely and curtsied.
“Don’t worry, Headmistress Eirene. We’ll be on our best behavior. We’re practically angels!”
With another sigh, she opened the door, and Hali whispered in my ear.
“You little liar…”
I smirked before we walked into the banquet hall, arms linked.
