26 Eli bought a new Ford Thunderbird two-door Heritage Coupe. He thought it looked sporty but more conservative than his toasted sportscar. Under the hood was a Mustang 302 cubic-inch V8 engine that put out 157 horsepower. He and Keiko were once again driving in the direction of a resort town, not quite so late at night. On a stretch of deserted road, he was tempted to open up the throttle to find out whether this new bucket of bolts had as much to give as his old one. “A man gets some money, and the first thing he thinks about is buying a new car,” Keiko teased. “Sure. My second thought was I’d invest in the clinic. Child abuse is an area of the law that needs some work. It would be a good way to work together.” “Is that your idea of a proposal? Some kind of joint business venture?”
