"How can I be pregnant now? I've worked so hard for everything." Angela quickly moved closer and placed a comforting hand on her shoulder. "There are still options, Kelly. It's only six weeks. If you don't think you're ready..." She hesitated before quietly adding, "...you could end the pregnancy." Kelly looked up sharply, her expression changing instantly. The room became painfully quiet again as she thought about her final year at the university, the dreams she had fought so hard to achieve, the betrayal she was still trying to survive, and now... the tiny life growing inside her. I hate what he did to me, but I can't punish an innocent child for the sins of its father." Her voice grew stronger with every word. "I don't know how I'll do it. I don't know how difficult this journey will be. But, somehow, I'll find a way." Tina's eyes filled with tears as she smiled proudly and kissed Kelly's forehead. "I'll be with you every step of the way." Angela reached over and squeezed Kelly's hand. "And so will I. You'll never have to do this alone." Kelly closed her eyes for a brief moment. For the first time since everything had fallen apart, she felt the tiniest spark of hope beginning to grow inside her. Tina glanced at her wristwatch and sighed. "I have an important meeting in thirty minutes." Looking at Angela, she asked, "Will you stay with her until I get back?" Angela smiled reassuringly. "Of course. I'm not going anywhere. I'm here, Auntie." Tina nodded gratefully. She leaned over, kissed Kelly gently on the forehead, picked up her handbag, and hurried out of the room. The door clicked shut behind her, leaving the room unusually quiet. For several moments, neither Kelly nor Angela spoke. Finally, Angela reached for the pizza box again and picked up another slice. "Come on," she said gently. "Eat a little more." Kelly shook her head. "I'm not hungry." Angela raised an eyebrow and smiled. "Well, if you've decided to keep that little one, you'd better start feeding both of you." Kelly couldn't help smiling. "You always know how to make me laugh." Angela laughed softly. "I try. Now... open up." Kelly obediently took another bite and chewed slowly before smiling. "Mmm... it's actually really good." Angela grinned proudly. "I told you. Extra cheese never disappoints." Kelly continued eating in silence, but her mind refused to rest. What am I going to do now? Can I really raise a baby on my own? How did my IUD fail? Everything was supposed to be under control. She lowered her eyes as the questions continued to race through her mind. Nothing makes sense anymore. Across from her, Angela watched quietly. Poor girl, she thought. She's barely had time to breathe. One challenge ends, and another begins. Yet somehow, Kelly always finds a way to keep going. Angela smiled to herself. Kelly was far stronger than she realized. "Water, please." Kelly's voice gently interrupted Angela's thoughts. "Of course," Angela replied immediately as she opened a bottle of water and handed it to her. "You're doing much better with that pizza." Kelly smiled faintly as she accepted the bottle. "Thank you... for everything." Angela reached across the table and squeezed her hand warmly. "You never have to thank me." Kelly looked at her best friend for a moment before smiling again. For the first time since waking up in the hospital, she truly believed she wasn't facing the future alone. A gentle knock sounded on the door before the doctor stepped inside. "Good afternoon, Kelly," he greeted with a warm smile. Kelly smiled politely in return. "I'm feeling much better," she replied. "I'm glad to hear that," he said as he quickly checked her IV line before looking through her chart. Kelly hesitated for a moment before speaking. "Doctor... I still don't understand. I had an IUD. How did I end up pregnant?" The doctor pulled a chair closer to her bedside and sat down. "That's a very reasonable question. There are several possibilities," he said calmly, making sure she understood every word. "Sometimes an IUD can shift out of position. In rare cases, it can be expelled from the uterus without the woman noticing, especially during menstruation." Kelly frowned in surprise. "I didn't even know that could happen." The doctor nodded. "It isn't common, but it does happen. We'll perform an ultrasound and a pelvic examination to determine whether the IUD is still in place." Looking up from her file, he asked, "When was the last time you checked for the IUD strings?" Kelly looked embarrassed. "I honestly can't remember. It's probably been over three months. I've been so busy with school, work, and... life." The doctor smiled reassuringly. "Don't blame yourself. Right now, our priority is making sure both you and the pregnancy are healthy. If everything remains stable, you should be able to go home tomorrow." Relief softened Kelly's expression. "Thank you, Doctor," she said sincerely. As he adjusted the IV drip, she looked at him anxiously and asked, "Can I ask one more question?" "Of course," he replied. "My head still hurts. Am I going to be okay?" The doctor smiled warmly. "You've had a concussion from the fall, but your condition is improving. The headaches should gradually settle over the next few days, and you're in good hands." Kelly finally relaxed and nodded. "Thank you." The doctor closed her file, gave her one last reassuring smile, and quietly left the room. Angela watched the door close before turning back to Kelly with a gentle smile. "See? I told you everything would be okay." She adjusted Kelly's pillows and pulled the blanket up slightly. "Now lie down and get some sleep. Your body needs it." Kelly obeyed, closed her eyes, and took a slow breath, but sleep refused to come. Brian's face. The apartment. Gina. The pregnancy. Everything replayed in her mind over and over again like a movie she couldn't pause. Every painful memory returned with frightening clarity, refusing to let her rest. She turned onto her side and stared at the wall for a long moment before whispering beneath her breath, "God... please help me." The room was quiet except for the steady hum of the hospital machines. Angela glanced over and realized Kelly was still awake but chose not to disturb her. She simply remained seated beside the bed, hoping her presence alone would offer some comfort. He carefully removed the IV cannula from her left hand before checking her latest test results once more. "Your CT scan looks completely normal." Kelly let out a relieved sigh she hadn't realized she had been holding. The doctor continued, "We also completed your ultrasound and examination, and the results explain how the pregnancy happened." Kelly looked at him expectantly. "You no longer have an IUD." She frowned in confusion. "What do you mean?" The doctor pointed to her report. "It appears the device was expelled naturally during one of your menstrual periods. You probably didn't notice when it happened." Kelly stared at him in disbelief before letting out a quiet gasp. "Oh my God. So that's what happened." He nodded sympathetically. "It isn't common, but it does happen." He handed her a discharge summary before continuing, "You'll be discharged later today. I want you to get plenty of rest, eat well, drink enough water, and remember..." He paused and smiled kindly. "Everything you do now also affects your baby." Almost instinctively, Kelly rested a hand on her stomach. The words felt different this time. My baby. The doctor scribbled a few final notes in her file before closing it. "If you have any concerns, my office is just down the hall." Kelly smiled gratefully. "Thank you, Doctor." After he left, the room became quiet once again. Kelly remained seated on the bed for several minutes, absentmindedly rubbing her stomach. I'm really going to have a baby, she thought. She wasn't sure whether she felt terrified or hopeful. Perhaps she felt both at the same time. Reaching for the bottle of water beside her bed, she took a long drink before setting it back down. "I should freshen up," she murmured to herself. Carefully, she pushed herself to her feet, using the bedside chair for support. The room spun for a brief moment, forcing her to sit back down immediately. "Whoa..." she muttered with a weak smile. "I guess I'm not as strong as I thought." As she caught her breath, something on the bedside table caught her attention. Her phone. "There you are," she whispered as she picked it up and unlocked the screen. Kelly's eyes widened as she unlocked her phone. Twenty-three missed calls. Every single one of them was from Brian. Beneath the notifications was a new text message. She hesitated for a moment before opening it. I'm sorry, babe. I never meant to hurt you. There's nothing serious between Gina and me. It was just a mistake from my past. She was my high school girlfriend. Please answer my calls. Let me explain everything. Kelly read the message once... then again. A bitter laugh escaped her lips as she shook her head in disbelief. "A mistake?" she whispered. "You lied to my face. You told me she was your cousin." Her grip tightened around the phone as fresh anger surged through her. "How many more lies were you planning to tell me?" Without another thought, she locked the screen and tossed the phone back onto the bed. "Bastard," she muttered under her breath.
