Chapter 9Three nights have passed, and nothing bad has happened, but Rene’s on edge, which is what has him out of bed in the middle of the night. He’s feeling unsettled, even though he’d spent a relaxing day with Evan. They’d gone to see the children, who were finally able to change forms today, and then they’d had a nice meal before spending several hours in bed, just exploring each other. Rene goes into his kitchen to get some juice. He opens the fridge, and picks up a carton of orange juice, but he stops when he feels a stickiness against his fingers. Being a new carton, it shouldn’t be sticky. Rene examines the carton for a split, ready to complain to the grocery store, when he notices a small, perfect hole, like an injection hole. Rene puts his nose to the teeny tiny hole and sniffs.
