Chapter 1: Sloane
"Sloane, you have exactly 3 minutes to be up if you expect to look somewhat presentable on your first day back," Marjorie, Sloane's mother, stated.
"Okayyy, I'm up" Sloane groggily declared.
Sloane rolled off her bed, nearly bumping her head on her night stand.
She glanced out the window and as she was about to walk to the bathroom, she caught a glimpse of something white in the forest, a fox, perhaps.
It was the first day of senior year, and Sloane had to look extra presentable today.
It was announced at the beginning of summer that Sloane's high school was merging with a nearby high school. There was a terrible storm one night and lightning struck and started a fire. The amount of work needed to repair the damage would've been too much, so the school board had a mandatory meeting about merging the 2 schools together.
Sloane was nervous. Principal Andrews had approached her and had requested that, since she was the student body president, she should be the one to deliver a welcoming speech.
A half an hour later Sloane is showered and just finishing up with her makeup when she hears a car pull up. Looking out the window, she notices her boyfriend in her driveway. She quickly dialed his number.
"Babe?" he answered.
"Rafe, I need help, I don't know what to wear" She whined on the phone.
"Would you like me to come in and help?" she could hear the smirk in his tone.
"No, thank you, but I just sent you 2 pictures and I need you to tell me which one looks more welcoming", She states.
The first outfit is a cute little plaid yellow gingham dress with her white converse and the second outfit is a pink striped bow top with jeans and her slip on white vans.
"Uh-" He stammered. " I think the pink one would look good."
"Okay" she paused, looking at the options, "I'll be out in a moment."
She walked outside in the yellow dress and she heard Rafe laugh.
"Why did you ask?" He chuckled.
"I just wanted an opinion", she paused, looking down at her dress, " This one seems more appropriate."
She walked up and kissed him.
"Good morning babe". She smiled at him.
"Baby, you look so beautiful this morning" He whispered into her mouth.
She blushed into his shoulder. Rafe and her had been together for 2 years, but she still got butterflies every time he complimented her.
As they pulled into school, Sloane couldn't help but notice the tension in the air. All the students were anxious to meet the new students. Their school was on the outskirts of town, so they had never really seen them before.
Sloane's family would go camping near there when she was younger, so there were a few of the kids she met then. However, it had been so long she wasn't even sure that any of those kids still lived there.
"SJ!" someone squealed, bringing Sloane out of her thoughts.
"Car!" Sloane squealed back. Who else would it be but her best friend, Carmella.
"How was your summer?" Carmella asked running into Sloane's arms.
"Boring, how was Europe?" Carmella had abandoned her all summer and traveled abroad with her cousins.
"It was amazing SJ, I so wish you could've come. You would've loved it", Carmella exclaimed.
"Did you meet any cute boys?" Sloane asked.
"I actually did, wanna see" Carmella was blushing.
"Is that a serious question?" Sloane stated.
Carmella started scrolling through all the pictures she had taken on her phone, and there was this one cute red-headed boy that kept popping up.
"What's his name, Car?" Sloane asked.
"Marcus, I have his number," She stated.
"Carmella Marie, you got a European boy's number and didn't tell me about it right away?" Sloane stated with a shocked look on her face.
"I know I'm sorry it's just still all surreal, I didn't think I'd find my m-" Carmella paused, looked at Sloane and stammered. "Uh, me a cute boyfriend and then I found him!"
Sloane could tell her friend was happy, so she smiled the biggest smile she could before saying, "I'm so happy for you Car, he better treat you well, or else I'll kick his ass."
Carmella laughed. "Trust me Ash gave him the same warning."
"He met your brother?" Sloane asked.
It had been so long since Sloane had seen her brother Asher, Carmella was one of the friends she made while camping. They grew so close that Carmella's parents allowed her to go to school with Sloane.
"Well yeah dummy Ash was with me when we met," She stated.
"Oh, I forgot that he actually existed, since I haven't seen him in so long" she says.
"Well, that changes today, he's somewhere around here," Carmella explained.
Everyone had gathered in the cafeteria for a mandatory meeting.
Principal Andrews was welcoming the new students. Suddenly, Sloane turned and made eye contact with the most amazing set of blue eyes she had ever seen.
She couldn't look away. He was tall, had ash blonde hair, muscled and had the most dazzling smile she had ever seen. Something about them seemed so familiar, without thinking, Sloane stepped forward.
"Please allow me to introduce our student body president, Sloane Johnson". Sloane could barely make out Principal Andrews in the background.
"Sloane" Carmella nudged her.
Dragging her eyes away "what" she whispered. "Oh."
Sloane took a deep breath before stepping forward.
"Welcome to our school" She began, "I know new beginnings can be hard, but they don't have to be. Feel free to come to me if there is anything you need help with." She paused, making eye contact with those amazing eyes again.
"We all have something that we can learn from each other, so let's make the most of this situation. This year is ours to shape and make our own, so let's make it the best that we can!" Sloane smiled.
She heard a few people behind her cheering, but none of the new students looked too excited. She understood though, a new environment is not fun. Sloane was serious in her speech. She would help anyone who came to her and needed it.
"Good job babe," Rafe stated, coming up behind her and kissing her on the cheek.
She heard a weird noise like a growl? She looked around but couldn't figure out where it was coming from. She also didn't see the boy with those amazing eyes anymore.
"Thanks Rafe", She sighed, looking down and patting down her dress.
Carmella cleared her throat. "SJ you remember my brother Asher,"
She turned and there they were, those amazing eyes.
"H-Hello" Sloane stammered.
"Nice to see you again" Asher stated deeply, extending his hand out.
Sloane grasped his hand. As she did, she got this tingling feeling all over her body.
She pulled her hand away. "This is my boyfriend, Rafe" she turned.
"Hey man" Rafe stated with this weird look on his face.
"How's it going?" Asher asked, still looking at Sloane.
The bell rang, "Oh, it looks like it's time for class, do you need help with anything Asher?" Sloane asked.
"I think he'll manage", Rafe stated. "Can we talk?" he asked.
"Yeah," she started to turn. "It was nice to see you agai- Hey Rafe" she stammered as he was pulling her away.
"What's going on?" She asked as soon as they were out of the cafeteria.
"He wants you and I don't like it. Why were you being so nice to him?" Rafe asked, giving a dirty look at the direction they just came from.
"He doesn't want me", Sloane deadpanned, "He's my best friend's brother. I couldn't be rude to him."
"I don't like it," he said with a scowl on his face.
"Look at me," she said, grabbing his face and forcing him to look at her. "I love you, and no one is going to take me from you" She said, leaning to kiss him.
The warning bell went off while they were kissing.
Sloane tried to pull away but Rafe just tightened his grasp on her.
"Rafe" She said against his lips. As she wiggled, he finally released her.
"Sorry baby, I got a little carried away." He kissed her cheek. "I love you see you after class."
Sloane started towards class. Even though she had literally just been kissing Rafe, there was only one person on her mind.
Asher.
