CHAPTER FIFTEENBurke Benedict lived in a decaying apartment hotel on Central Park West that was a favorite residence for theatrical people. There was a legend that, years ago, it had been owned by a famous firm of producers and, even today, some old stars from musical comedy still lived here. A middle-aged blonde at the elaborate reception desk told Ash the number of Benedict’s apartment, without insisting that she phone upstairs to announce him, and fluttered her jeweled fingers toward a row of elevators.
