🌕 Chapter 19: Before the Break

532 Words
Ashen's command tent was a frenzy of maps, glowing stones, and tension. The scent of smoke clung to everything — but not the warm kind. This was the smoke of warning. Of hollow rot spreading fast and wrong. “There’s a tear forming near the Emberreach ridge,” Miri said, pacing. “A gate. Not natural. The Hollow’s pushing it open.” “A warfront?” Kaira asked. “No, a hunting ground,” Riven said, arms crossed. “They’re not just coming for land. They’re coming for you.” --- ⚔️ The Decision Ashen tossed a blade onto-- the map table. “We could hold the ridge — for a day. Maybe two. But we need the Flamekeeper to destroy the gate core.” All eyes turned to Kaira. “I’m not trained for that kind of fire yet,” she said. “I barely made it out of the last fight.” “Your bond with Riven changed that,” Miri said. “The flame answers you now. The vault confirmed it.” “You said the vault showed you memories,” Ashen added. “Did it show you what was coming?” Kaira hesitated. “It showed me a choice.” Riven stepped closer. “Then choose. Don’t let the Hollow write this chapter for you.” “If I leave now,” she said, “I might not return.” “Then we burn together,” Riven replied. “Or not at all.” --- 🌑 The Night Before That night, Emberreach was silent. Too silent. Kaira stood on the outer wall, watching flickers of unnatural fog curl along the ridge. The Hollow had never come this close before. The torches dimmed, reacting to the tension in the air. Behind her, Riven approached. “You don’t have to say anything,” he said. “I already know.” “That I’m scared?” “That you’re still going. Despite it.” He reached into his cloak, pulling out a thin chain — a pendant shaped like a flame-wolf tooth, its edges scorched silver. “It was my mother’s,” he said. “She gave it to me when she left the clan. Said it would protect me when I couldn’t protect myself.” “Why give it to me?” “Because now it belongs to someone braver.” She took it gently, heart pounding. “You always know the right thing to say.” “No,” he said softly. “I just finally found the right person to say it to.” --- 💥 Dawn Breaks At sunrise, the alarm bells rang. The Hollow breached the first shield line. Fog rushed the valley like a wave, and within it — shapes. Shrieking. Twisting. Alive. Kaira strapped on her cloak, flame blades ignited in both hands. Riven beside her. Ashen on the ridge with the rebel troops. “Today,” she whispered, “I stopped running from what I am.” “What are you?” Riven asked. She looked up — eyes blazing gold. “The Flamekeeper of a dying world.” And then she leapt. Into fire. Into war. Into the truth of her becoming.
