🌕 Chapter 20: The Last Howl

574 Words
The Hollow came like a scream. Twisted beasts charged through the fog, their bodies made of bone, ash, and blackfire. Emberreach burned with defiance, rebel firecasters unleashing everything they had. But it wasn’t enough. Kaira landed in the middle of the chaos — golden flames surging from her hands like wings. “Gate’s north side!” Miri shouted. “We can’t get close!” The rift pulsed in the distance — a swirling hole in reality, vomiting smoke and shadow. At its heart: the Core Warden, a massive creature crowned in molten horns and voidlight eyes. Kaira’s pulse matched its growl. “Cover me!” she yelled to Ashen. “You’re not going alone!” Riven snarled, slashing through a beast beside her. “You swore to walk with me,” she said. “Then walk me into this hell.” --- 🔥 Into the Rift They pushed toward the gate together. Flames curled from Kaira’s body, reacting to her fury, her purpose. Riven moved like a storm, his blade singing beside her. Together, they cut through the Hollow’s elite guard. The Core Warden saw her. Roared. And charged. Kaira braced herself, hands forward, calling to the fire inside her. But this time… it wasn’t just hers. Riven grabbed her hand. And their bond flared — not with heat, but with harmony. “Now,” she whispered. And unleashed everything. --- ⚡ The Flamekeeper’s Awakening The fire roared like a sun being born. A wolf-shaped burst of sacred flame exploded from Kaira’s body — white-gold and howling. It devoured the Core Warden, burned through the rift’s edge, and struck the Hollow gate with divine force. Time broke for a moment. She saw a vision. Her mother, Liora, was standing beside a cloaked man in Earth attire — smiling. The vault. The prophecy. The bloodline. But it passed too fast. Then: silence. --- 💫 Aftermath Kaira awoke on a scorched plateau. Her cloak was torn, her body aching… but alive. Beside her, Riven stirred. “Still breathing?” he asked, his voice hoarse. “Barely,” she muttered. Ashen limped into view with Miri and Kael behind him. “The rift’s gone,” Ashen said. “You did it.” “We did it,” she corrected. He smirked. “Never seen a flame move like that, It wasn’t wild. It was… old.” “It was sacred,” Riven said. Kaira looked out over the valley. The Hollow had retreated. For now. But the memory of the vault… of the man in Earth clothes… haunted her. There’s more to your fire than Lunaris. More to your soul than you were told. --- 🌕 The Last Line That night, Kaira stood at the cliff’s edge again, the pendant around her neck, flame still humming beneath her skin. Riven joined her silently. “We stopped the gate,” she said. “But I don’t think the Hollow was the real threat.” “Then we find what is.” She nodded. “I’m not just fire. Not just Lunari.” She turned to him. “Will you still stand with me… even if I’m not the girl you thought I was?” He leaned in. “I didn’t fall in love with a Flamekeeper. I fell in love with you. Whoever you turn out to be.” And as the stars flared overhead, distant howls echoed in the dark. But this time… they howled for her.
